Street Cleaner finds £21000 Gold Rolex Watch

A street cleaner struck gold when he found a Rolex watch down a drain.

The 28-year-old was cleaning a drain near Chalkwell railway station in Essex last Friday when he found the watch among the dirt.

When he took a closer look, he found it was an 18-carat gold Rolex worth £21,000.

The worker, who does not wish to be named, handed the watch in at his nearest police station.

But it had not been registered lost or stolen and, if it is not claimed within 30 days, he will be allowed to keep it.

Pc Calley Mackay, of Essex Police, said: "This was a highly unusual find and it's hard to imagine how something so valuable has not been reported lost or stolen by its owner.

....might be worth taking your metal detectors to Essex..

Aw amazing. He handed it in. I hope it's some over paid footballer who doesn't get two s**ts about losing a watch and doesn't claim it.

Yeah..I think I would have too, it's just too much money not to....it's going to be a LONG 30 days for him

Shaun 15-02-2012 07:59 AM

That's good of him to hand it in. I guess the ones who pocket them don't report it to the papers

Oh yeah I would have handed it in too. I just think it's awesome that he did. Yep very very long 30 days!

Marc 15-02-2012 08:02 AM

I bet if he continued to look further up the drain he'd have found the dead body that it belonged too.

...I'm not sure why I should be laughing at that...but I am
...he's probably waiting for the 30 days to be up to look...it would be the worst kind of sods law to 'inherit' a corpse too

mizzy25 15-02-2012 08:10 AM

i hope he gets to keep it 4 his honesty.

Yes me too, mind you, I wonder how much he would get for it on Ebay......£3-4000?

Locke. 15-02-2012 08:19 AM

What the ****, why would you hand it in :joker:

Shaun 15-02-2012 08:19 AM

How would the owner of it even prove it's theirs?

..I don't know...I'm looking into how I can prove it's mine now
...any ideas would be welcome

joeysteele 15-02-2012 08:27 AM

I hope even if it is claimed that he gets some substantial reward for his honesty by the proven owner.
How someone could lose such a valuable item and then not even say they have is incredible. The street cleaner really deseves to get to keep this one.

Visage 15-02-2012 08:39 AM

I hope he gets to keep it. I wonder who broke the story to make it news, surely that could lead to many false claims.

I would have handed it in, but would hope it stayed secret enough until the 30 days were up.

...I think it was his ex wife

thesheriff443 15-02-2012 10:20 AM

if he kept it it would be stealing!,just beacuse you find something it dont make it yours, also it could have been stolen and if he later tryed to sell it and the police found out,he would be charged with handling stolen goods,at least this way he has a chance of owning it or a reward or just the good feeling inside that he did the right thing.

Ammi 15-02-2012 10:29 AM

None of the rest of my family said they would hand it in...*that sad moment when you realise you are living with a bunch of criminals*

Kizzy 15-02-2012 10:38 AM

Had to be essex didn't it haha looking at the towie lot im not surprised the owner has not realised its missing yet :)

Yep...he only managed to find it because the hair extensions had blocked the drain....

Niamh. 15-02-2012 10:43 AM

I would have just kept it, anyone who can afford to waste £21k on a watch deserves to lose it :idc: I could do so much more with £21k

thesheriff443 15-02-2012 10:49 AM

i would say its been stolen,as rolex dont make them with cheap straps,

Livia 15-02-2012 11:20 AM

Good for him for handing it in... shame on the paper for printing the story before the 30 days is up. If no one's reported it lost or stolen, then they really haven't missed it and don't deserve to get it back. Hope he gets to keep it.

Yes good for in...I may not have been that honest if I didn't have kids...but in all honesty I could never stand there and take a moral stance with them over anything if I had been dishonest over something like that

Livia 15-02-2012 11:28 AM

If I found a purse or a wallet, I'd hand it in. If I found a gold Rolex worth 20 grand, I'd stick it in my pocket. Anyone who can afford to spend £20k on a watch can afford to lose it. All property is theft and all that. Admire your stance though, Ammi.

..I think I may not be that honest if I didn't have children

Livia 15-02-2012 11:44 AM

Actually, I have had a rethink about this...I couldn't keep it in this instance...I could never wear a £21000 watch and if I sold it...well, that would take me down another deceptive route as to where the money came from and the lies......my 'hate' in life is liars. BUT, if there was something else...another scenario...one my kids wouldn't find out about.....hmmm...
I still don't think I would though...I'm the sort of person that can only say..'this is the right thing to do....' if I feel justified to say it....
....that's why I'm skint

...Oh dear, I'm over thinking this...'I'LL KEEP THE ****ING WATCH*

Josy 15-02-2012 12:03 PM

I found a watch at the swimming baths once, it was worth £9.99 out of argos :bored:

No I never kept it and I knew the price because everyone was wearing them.

It was one of those big pop watches that had the bright elastic strap and huge face

..oh, I know the ones, they're sh*te...they probably left it there on purpose

Kizzy 15-02-2012 01:02 PM

paranoia would make me hand it in, i would be convinced it was stolen goods i wouldn't risk trying to sell it and getting arrested. All property is theft?...is that a marxist view liv? haha :)

Vicky. 15-02-2012 03:10 PM

I wouldnt hand it in, no chance. People who can afford to waste that much cash on watches wont miss the 20k it cost

I also wouldnt hand in a purse or wallet full of cash...unless it had ID in it.

arista 15-02-2012 05:18 PM

On London ITV1 News

The same bin men also found 4 or 5 more watches

The police think they could be stolen.

All this goes to prove that you are a much nicer person than I am.

That's a cold, hard stance. And I so admire that....
