The Ban List

Does anyone else find it a bit authoritarian? it's almost like they are posting bans on the public forum as a WARNING to the rest of us. like You better behave or YOU could be next!!! or they are trying to publicly humiliate people.

i think posting the bans publicly like that is a bit unsavoury.

i don't like it.

Should the Ban List be public? what do you think?

Doogle 07-05-2012 01:59 PM

That's nice dear.

Josy 07-05-2012 02:00 PM

The ban list was only brought back because the members asked for it and it stops other members creating threads and posts asking why such and such is banned and how long for.

wow, how patronizing. you'll expect me to be as rude to you in the future i guess? cool. looking forward to it. :)

I think you were quite rude about staff in your own post tbh Alex, you made it sound as if we update the ban list to scare other members when that couldnt be further from the truth.

but it doesn't do that, because i've seen some bans in the list that say why someone was banned, and i know it's a BS reason, but no one is allowed to respond in the thread to disagree with the mod that banned them, so it doesn't promote any harmony on the forum at all, it just publicly shames people, and it's very frustrating when you see someone being banned for a totally BS reason and no one else can stick up for the person getting the BS ban cause the thread doesn't allow anyone to post in it.

What Josy said basically. It's sort of an insult to say the mods are trying to scare people. The majority of members like to know what's happened and why they're banned and therefore the ban list is a simple way of doing that. I just don't understand where you came to the conclusion that it was to scare members or something.

Other members bans are nothing to do with you though so it really doesnt matter if you disagree with the mod or not and there is no way you can say that you know the reason is bull**** as you don't see everything that goes on.

Black Dagger 07-05-2012 02:12 PM

Why does it even bother you?

No its Normal
you have this wrong , sadly.

lostalex 07-05-2012 02:18 PM

alright, well i was just wondering if anyone else agreed. obviously no one else does. That's why i asked.

MTVN 07-05-2012 02:19 PM

If you take a look at this poll http://www.thisisbigbrother.com/foru...d.php?t=178159

47 members wanted it to be brought back and only 5 members didn't, Mods would probably rather not update it tbh

it think it's a bit unfair though, because it let's the mod's say their side of the story, but it's a closed thread, so no one can give any alternative opinions of the situation. Why is it a closed thread?

Josy 07-05-2012 02:24 PM

Its a closed thread because if there was other posts in it then members would have to scroll through lots of stuff to find the actual posts about bans.

Proved its OK to do.

Maia 07-05-2012 02:25 PM

Somehow get the feeling it'd end up overrun with chaos and arguments if it wasn't closed

Doogle 07-05-2012 02:25 PM

It's in announcements, so it's really just to announce why they're banned rather than have any discussions over it. I think the mods would really go crazy if they had to keep arguing (because you know every time someone would argue about it)

Because like people said it'd get overrun with arguments, it's just there to let the rest of the site know who's banned, for why and for how long

The private appeals section is there if someone thinks they were banned unfairly, as long as they don't just troll it

that's a good point.

Jords 07-05-2012 02:55 PM

No most members like to know whos banned and why so that threads do not need to be made over it... why would anybody see it as YOU MIGHT BE NEXT? lmao!

joeysteele 07-05-2012 03:01 PM

Probably not very nice to be on it for others to see admittedly but no one needs to be banned,we all just need to observe the rules and then all is well,no worries.
I think plenty tolerance is probably given before a ban is done anyway.

They wouldn't. Its just lostalex's drama queen emerging from within.

Kizzy 07-05-2012 03:16 PM

I agree It should be a closed thread, I agree it should be on view on the forum ....But the comments with them, they are not really needed are they?
Like is always said it is not the business of the rest of the forum to ask why, I have had a look and one or two look a little patronising...
Please don't jump all over me for this, it's just my opinion.

Fetch The Bolt Cutters 07-05-2012 03:26 PM

hgahahah i voted 'I'm a Mod and I'm not allowed to vote in this poll'

but im not even a mod HAHAHAHAHAHAH

Glenn. 07-05-2012 03:33 PM

I cant see how it would be patronising. People get banned for a reason and nine times out of ten its behaviour in threads that causes bans to happen in the first place. That seems pretty public and available to the forum to me.

Its just people who have a problem with authority that see the wrong in it. Simple as.

You are right it is,any rule break is apparent on the forum. Why then have a comment to accompany a ban?
It's nothing to do with having a problem with authority, if you break a rule then yes you should be banned, all I was questioning were the comments.

Redway 07-05-2012 03:45 PM

To be honest, I'll think you'll find that the vast majority of posters like the ban list being updated - in a poll last year, 47 normal posters (not moderators) said they liked the ban list being updated, compared to the 5 who didn't like it. I honestly don't see any problem - if they don't want people knowing why they were banned (which isn't even true for most), they shouldn't have gotten themselves banned in the first place. If you don't like it, don't read it. You don't speak for the majority.

Vicky. 07-05-2012 03:56 PM

Reasons have to accompany the bans for a few reasons

1) Sometimes the reason for the ban happened off the main forum. Eg. Spamming someones PM inbox or something like that

2) Sometimes (and usually) the ban is not for any ONE reason. It is usually a build up of infractions...this must be stated in the ban list because otherwise people think 'oh XXXXX got a 1 week ban for just calling someone a wanker' and it seems a massively harsh punishment for the one thing they did on the day

3) In general...posts that get infractions/bans are deleted. So no, there wouldnt be a way usually to see why someone was banned, unless you were there at the time

InOne 07-05-2012 05:27 PM

I like to know who's banned and what for. I'm just nosy I guess.

Vanessa 07-05-2012 05:30 PM

I don't want to be on this list ever again!

Exactly Joey.

And for the record I hate the ban list and I hate updating it, we only brought it back because almost every active member wanted it.
