It certainly is ..... and who's going to foot the bill ?

Not the fat cats "sponsoring" the Games but the taxpayers so-called representatives, the Tory Government, who can't afford an army to protect the country (apparently) but who are prepared to use what little we've got to "pat down" Olympic ticket holders and tell them where the nearest toilets are .....

lostalex 12-07-2012 08:28 AM

I think because of the '72 munich games incident and also the '96 bombing it's right that the Olympics should have super tight security. It's obviously a major target. Even if they are doing menial tasks at least they'll be there.

Quote:

Retired Colonel Richard Kemp, a former infantry commander in the British Army, said the timing of the announcement was "bizarre".

"We've known about the Olympic Games for seven years, if we couldn't have planned better than this then there's something wrong," he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

Colonel Kemp said he understood many of the extra troops being drafted in had just returned from Afghanistan - or were about to be deployed there - and would have been due to go on leave.

Sources at the Ministry of Defence said the extra military personnel would be compensated if they had their leave cancelled.

The BBC understands the extra troops were put on a "one day" notice to move recently, in anticipation of the problems at G4S.

The government has previously said a total security force of 23,700 will take care of venue security, including 13,500 troops and the G4S contingent.
So more than 10% of the Biritish Army will be "guarding" the OG - presumably paid for by the taxpayer - meanwhile the "sponsors" have a monoploy on sales withing the Olympic venues and will be raking in the profits .....

Many of those troops will, of course, be facing redundancy due to Tory Government cuts .....

G4S will have overall control of security at more than 30 Olympics sporting venues and 70 "non-competition" venues such as car parks and hotels.

Some of the people contracted to work for G4S have told the BBC the company has given them little information.

One caller to BBC Radio 5live, Jane, from Manchester, said she had heard nothing from G4S since April.

"I had an interview in March and I had training for a security licence in April, and then since then there has been very little information about what actually the job role is," she said.

"I have had no job training. I don't even know where I'm going to work, or what kind of work its going to be or when it's going to start."
G4S may well employing some right undesirables (not "Jane", of course) ..... :hmph:

London 2012: G4S recruits angry over Games hiring delays

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-18767999

Quote:

People recruited by security company G4S to work during the Olympics have spoken of anger and disappointment over their treatment.

The company is being paid £300m to supply 10,000 guards for the Games, but the BBC understands it cannot now bring in that number.

Anger has been growing for weeks among those involved in G4S's recruitment process.

Nosa Eghobamien, 19, from Watford, has been told that she both has and has not got a job.

She was trained, then told her application had not been accepted, then told to collect her uniform, but earlier was told she is still being screened.

She said: "I was so excited to work there.

"It makes me upset and not want to watch the Olympics knowing I could have been working there."

Mike Curtis, of High Wycombe, said his daughter had also been left disappointed.

He said: "She initially undertook training and received a contract to be one of the security staff some time ago, but then received no further information until she received an email at short notice with details of a final training day."

She was unable to attend.

"No alternatives were provided and it was impossible to contact anyone at G4S," he added.

One parent told the BBC that many young people had taken time out of studying for A-levels to complete training for jobs they had not been given.

She said: "For a lot of young people this is their first employment. They are distraught and angry."

Darius Athill, from London, described a "long and laborious" process after applying for a job months ago.

"I went for an interview and was sent for security vetting. I was then told I had passed screening and vetting and that I would hear back from them.

"I was sent contracts and given a login to a website, which didn't work. After calling a helpline and waiting hours to get through they had no idea what I was talking about."

Chris, from London, said: "I was offered the role of team leader.

"I have now been actively chasing G4S for two months and every time I have called I have been told I will be contacted shortly to arrange training and that I should be patient."

Labour's Tessa Jowell said on Wednesday there was "clearly a serious problem".
Not just serious - potentially catastrophic ..... :pipe:

London 2012: G4S to lose up to £50m on Olympics contract

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18837524

Quote:

Security firm G4S has said it stands to lose up to £50m after it announced it was unable to provide enough security guards for the London Olympics.

G4S said it was "deeply disappointed" and accepted responsibility for the costs of extra military personnel.

The culture secretary has said any serviceman who had been inconvenienced would have their costs repaid through refunds from the contract.

Jeremy Hunt* told BBC Radio 4's Any Questions: "If there's an apology for the fact that this has had to happen at the last moment, then I'm willing to give it, of course."

"But I also think that most people in the army and the forces are very proud of the fact that that is what they are there to do, to help us at the moments when we need them."

The Commons Public Accounts Committee has summoned G4S, two government departments and 2012 organisers Locog to answer questions in September.

MPs want to know why G4S was unable to hire enough staff.

Ian Swales, a Liberal Democrat MP and member of the committee said G4S should have provided a "Rolls-Royce service" after increasing its charges by £198m.

"We were really concerned because when the announcement of the doubling of the number of security personnel was made we looked at the breakdown of the costs and we saw that the G4S contract was going up from £86m to £284m, which felt like a colossal amount of money," he said.

Prime Minister David Cameron said: "I'm absolutely clear that if companies don't deliver on their contracts then they should be pursued for that money".

But Mr Cameron tried to change the focus of attention away from security, saying: "We should be raising our sights, and thinking of the incredible inspiration that these Games are going to bring.

"The facilities are built, the country is ready, we are in really good shape."

The man in charge of London 2012, Lord Sebastian Coe, denied the Olympics was in "crisis".

Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said the situation looked like "another Home Office shambles".

London 2012: G4S 'only knew eight days ago' of staff shortage

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18840464

Quote:

Senior managers at G4S only realised "eight or nine days ago", that they could not provide enough security guards for the London Olympics, the company's chief executive has said.

Nick Buckles told the BBC that problems in the recruitment and deployment process were only recently identified.

He also could not guarantee all the security staff spoke fluent English.

G4S will charge Olympic organisers Locog £280m, but says it will lose up to £50m on the contract.

Mr Buckles said the company accepted it had "underestimated the task of supplying staff to the Olympics".

"We deeply regret that... and we are deeply disappointed. It was a daunting task to supply that number of staff in a short time scale.

"I began to know it was going wrong eight or nine days ago... Basically we are recruiting a large number of people and they are all working through a process of interview, two or three different degrees of training, licensing and accreditation.

"It is only when you get closer to the Games, you realise that the number is not as high as you expect," Mr Buckles added.
What are these managers "managing" ?

Don't they have plans, schedules, targets and reviews ?

Private companies rake in large amounts from the government for running care homes, hospitals, security services staff them with low skilled low paid people.

London 2012: G4S chief faces MPs' scrutiny of security

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18866153

Quote:

G4S chief executive Mr Buckles, who is due to appear before the Commons Home Affairs Select Committee, has said he is "bitterly disappointed" at his company's failure to meet the terms of its contract.

An insider from the committee organising the Olympics (Locog) has told the BBC that fit failed to deal with the problems at G4S despite warnings over the last 18 months.

Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt said it was no time for a "witch-hunt" but "contingency plans" were in place if G4S further failed to deliver. He told the BBC's Newsnight programme the government had "moved very quickly" when it learned of the company's staffing issues, adding that ministers would have been failing at their jobs if they didn't have a back-up plan that worked.

Police, meanwhile, have had to deploy extra officers at short notice from eight UK forces to do Olympic security work after the company's staff failed to turn up to venues.

Greater Manchester Police had to deploy officers to provide security at a hotel in Salford where four Olympic football teams will stay - after only 17 of an expected 56 G4S staff turned up for work.

112,000 troops to 82,000 troops, many old regiments are being cut or merged (just like they did in 1993/4, example of the time, I originally joined The Royal Corps of Transport which was soon merged into The Royal Logistics Corps).

Alot of cut personel will be those who are currently in rehab after losing a limb or several limbs. While the Government is playing the happy pc brigade our lads and lasses are stuffed into high rise flats that most rooms will not allow wheelchair access, therefore they have to crawl room to room, folding the wheelchair down to get it in behind them. Meanwhile, new 'arrivals' into the UK get to live in splendid accomodation at the taxpayers expense, mobile phones provided, cars, sofa's, dining room sets, even paint and wallpaper.

The lads and lasses down at the Olympics will be in tents, on basic care, minimal sleep, cookhouses set up in tents, you name it.

The army's excuse, and I've heard this so many times myself, "you are paid 0:00 hours to 23:39 hours every day".
