California passes law against trying to convert gay teens.

The Californian governor has signed off on new laws making it illegal to use psychotherapy in an effort to make gay teenagers straight.

California is the first state in the US to pass a law banning conversion therapy on anyone under 18.

The state's governor, Jerry Brown, says therapies used to try to change a person's sexual orientation have no basis in science or medicine.

"They will now be relegated to the dustbin of quackery," Mr Brown said on his Twitter feed, after signing the ban into law at the weekend.

Gay rights activists have been battling groups that believe counselling and prayers will help teenagers rid themselves of their homosexuality, arguing the treatment can cause depression and suicide.

Under the law, doctors cannot provide therapy that seeks "to change behaviours or gender expressions or to eliminate or reduce sexual or romantic attractions or feelings toward individuals of the same sex".

The law comes into effect in January.

"They will now be relegated to the dustbin of quackery."

Good. How idiotic to think you can change who someone is.

It's about time too - I was gobsmacked to read that this even happened how backward and narrow minded some people are.

Harry! 03-10-2012 08:14 PM

California has spoken! I hope many other places follow suit!

Nedusa 03-10-2012 08:32 PM

Only in America can you find such madness, trying to "cure" someone of their sexuality because their parents don't agree with it.. Lol

I welcome this law it's about time these quacks were stopped getting rich on other people's prejudices...!!!

iRyan 03-10-2012 08:41 PM

Good news. California at the forefront of American progression as usual.

they try to change everyone else? smokers, drug takers, drinkers, husbands, mental health patients, workless workless people, why do you think the nation is drugged up to its eyeballs?

Mystic Mock 03-10-2012 10:31 PM

Great news, that's only the start of it though as the other states will soon follow I think.

joeysteele 03-10-2012 10:35 PM

Thank all powers that be for some sensible act at last, hope other States follow this lead too.

Didn't we have those nutters in London putting up those "we can cure you" flyers on buses around April this year?

Mystic Mock 03-10-2012 11:34 PM

Don't forget "pray away the gay".

the truth 03-10-2012 11:50 PM

in a nation where thousands get murdered by 300 million guns , they think this issue is more important? crackers.

Mystic Mock 03-10-2012 11:51 PM

Well it's gonna be harder to clear all the gun crime out over doing something that's easier and should have been dealt with years ago.

yeah so lets just ignore the thousands of innocents murdered in th streets and the tens of thousands maimed for life.....lets just go for easy vote winning issues, lets get the gay vote and make a big issue of child psychiatry , which is in fact used for loads and loads of different people in different situations....talk about a smokescreen to avoid the really important issues. the brainless radical liberals on here are an embafrassment.....we get endless threads about gay marriage, gay peoople have all the legal rights already, yet still go on as if theyre enormous victims, under rubbish, theyre not victims of anything in this country

meanwhile rather more important unresolved issues like the thousands abused and in effect killed off in care homes, hospitals, the fact we have no military hospitals, the act the Uk is bankrupt, the fact disable people still cant even access wheelchairs or even buildings in their wheelchairs, the meow meow drug craze is out of control, the police force is unfit for purpose, the media corruption, the illegal wars, corporate corruption worldwide creating war poverty famine , the melting ice caps etc etc etc this lot on here need to reassess their narrow selfish agendas.

Mystic Mock 04-10-2012 12:12 AM

I agree with alot of your points The Truth, but the Governments can only do so much.

youre missing the point. the adults need to realise how unimportant this issue is, its not even worth a thread on here. people need to really discuss the important issues going on around us in this decayed bankrupt nation
