Why do women wear high heels?

Ive asked many women over the years why they put themselves through the agony of tottering around in 5 inch heels in the depths of midwinter and Ive yet to have an answer, most just look confused about it others dont quite want to explain exactly....so does any woman or even man have an explanation? ok heels are considered sexy, ok they make you taller, agreed. do they change your posture, your body shape to highlight your sexier assets?

Niamh. 22-11-2012 12:41 PM

I rarely wear heels, hate them, uncomfortable horrible things. Obviously I do if I'm wearing a dress but not very high ones

Ammi 22-11-2012 12:43 PM

..high heels don't automatically mean agony..some ladies find them comfortable..why don't you try them and find out for yourself...

GiRTh 22-11-2012 12:45 PM

I like the sexiness of high heels but they're completely impractical. It must be like standing on a knitting needle.

AnnieK 22-11-2012 12:47 PM

Heels elongate the calf and make legs look longer apparently giving the leg a nicer shape. Before I had my son I rarely wore flat shoes but now I live in them and find heels uncomfortable but I don't feel "dressed up" without stupidly uncomfortable high heels. It's now like a competition with myself if I can do a full night without ending up barefoot

GiRTh 22-11-2012 12:51 PM

My neighbour likes to wear tall heels to work. Its not that she's particularly short or anything she just likes to wear them to look fabulous. She always looks amazing BTW but I cant imagine what it must be like to stand on tall heels all day.

the truth 22-11-2012 12:52 PM

so theyre worn to elongate the calf , right. is that it

Vicky. 22-11-2012 12:59 PM

I very very rarely wear heels. Only time I do so is on occasions where I am required to look very well dressed (weddings, parties etc) and even then I tend to opt for flat shoes a lot of the time. I own only one pair of heels. Dont see the point in making myself uncomfortable all night for the sake of my feet looking good

Alf 22-11-2012 01:00 PM

i thought this was gonna have a punchline inside

Livia 22-11-2012 01:10 PM

I wear heels almost all the time. They make my legs and bum look great. They make me walk better, they make me stand straighter, my clothes hang better and in heels I'm around six feet tall. Wearing them gives me an advantage in a male-dominated job, even though that advantage is purely psychological.

Kizzy 22-11-2012 01:16 PM

Whats the work advantage livia?

Novo 22-11-2012 01:26 PM

Who knows but it's a good thing

Ammi 22-11-2012 01:26 PM

...sod the work advantage...Livia will you marry me...?..I think I'm in love..

Lee. 22-11-2012 01:32 PM

I don't wear heels to work (i am meant to) but i do wear them on nights out. I wear them because I like being tall (im 6'1 in heels), they make you look slimmer and the force you to stand straight and tall and they make your legs look longer..

..and they make a fantastic weapon should you get in any bother :D

I'm sorry Ammi, I have to turn you down. I'm afraid you lack something in my eyes. A penis.

Ammi 22-11-2012 01:35 PM

..there just isn't any answer to that...yes, that's true....

I went through a phase of wearing them in my 20's even though i'm 5'10....
I got lots of attention, although they made me less popular with other women....and they are no good for running in :D

Maia 22-11-2012 01:52 PM

Don't see the appeal in them myself...bit uncomfortable and flat shoes are generally better

Wedges are the way to go if you want to run! I had a massive pair of platform sandal wedges in the summer and found I could actually run in them to catch the pizza shop! :amazed:

well, the truth, are you any the wiser?

Josy 22-11-2012 02:52 PM

Maybe because they want to?

nicole_burks 22-11-2012 03:10 PM

It makes our butt look good.

LemonJam 22-11-2012 03:16 PM

Elongating the legs. Even when you look at most fashion designers sketches it's caricature-esque.

no not really it seems like another urban myth....they make you taller briefly which allegedly helps their careers? they also make your legs look more muscular which is more alluring? and supposedly make one stand straighter, which Id question? half the ladies I see in heels look about as comfortable as a bloke in wellies carrying a fridge freezer up an escalator, they wont even take flip slops in their handbags when their ankles collapse at the end of the night, must struggle on , anything for appearances sake, but heyho each to their own

Mystic Mock 22-11-2012 04:59 PM

I don't get it either as every woman I see wear them always look like they are in massive pain, I don't get why they do that to themselves but each to there own I guess.

Gstar 22-11-2012 05:04 PM

High heels are great on any woman, apparently it's really bad for your back and if you wear them a lot they can change the shape of your spine which obviously isn't good (something along those lines), don't let me put you off ladies

Never mind the heels, I'm more surprised by their ability to wear shoes with pointed ends where their toes look all mushed together. That always looks painful to me.
My sister says they leave her in agony so she always has square ended boots.

Last time I wore heels was at my brothers wedding and I ended up falling down the steps of the church :bawling: had my flip flops on by 6pm

Those shoes with the pointy front, your toes aren't actually in the pointy bit :joker:

They're still squished into a tiny space with no room to breathe. Looks painful.

They're also horrible to drive in because your toes aren't in the place they normally are
