Do you mind terms of endearment from people you don't know..?

..if someone you don't know addresses you with a term of endearment...mate, dear, babe, hun, sweetheart..whatever they may say....do you mind..?...or would you rather they didn't..?..

Niamh. 09-01-2013 01:27 PM

hhhmmmm, I don't know, depends on who it was, how they say it, what the situation is, lots of factors really. I suppose generally speaking though It doesn't bother me

Black Dagger 09-01-2013 01:32 PM

Nah, I keep my little 'codenames' to my close-friends.

I do call literally everybody bub though, I might need to stop with that one.

Jesus. 09-01-2013 01:35 PM

Just pluck up the courage and call me the name you so obviously want to, Ammi.

You may find it liberating.

Vanessa 09-01-2013 01:37 PM

No, it doesn't bother me at all.

_Seth 09-01-2013 01:38 PM

Nah, it's sweet. :)

MTVN 09-01-2013 01:39 PM

Nah doesn't bother me, I quite often address people I don't know as "mate" as well

Kate! 09-01-2013 01:43 PM

I'm fine with it.

Drew. 09-01-2013 01:45 PM

i like it :)

AnnieK 09-01-2013 01:57 PM

I generally don't mind...it beats being called an awful name but I couldn't call someone I don't know "love" or something.....

Petershaw1984 09-01-2013 02:02 PM

I use it all the time at work with my patients. Love for the women mate for the men

Niamh. 09-01-2013 02:03 PM

^ lol now you mention it, strangers calling me "love" I don't really like

Cherie 09-01-2013 02:05 PM

I have no problem with it in real life, on forums it depends on the context they are used :suspect: as some posters use them to try and patronise.

haha, yeah, see that's where my depends thing comes in, if it were a 90 year old man or woman saying that to me, it wouldn't bother me but it probably would in other situations

AnnieK 09-01-2013 02:18 PM

There is a girl who works in my local shop who calls everyone love - she is like 12 so it sounds so weird......

It would annoy me if a 12 year old started calling me love

Ok, maybe upon reflection, I'm not overly keen on strangers using terms of endearment with me

AnnieK 09-01-2013 02:28 PM

where I used to live people used "cock" as a term of endearement.....as in "you all right cock?" arrrggghh now that one annoyed me - when I first moved there I didn't know whether to hug them or punch them in the face :joker:

Lee. 09-01-2013 02:29 PM

Nah, it doesn't bother me at all.. unless its used in a derogatory way, like "haw darlin, get your tits oot"

LOL..yeah you see..you're starting to get my point....

..I don't mind it when I know people..I don't even need to know them that well..but I'm not keen on it if it's a total stranger who I've never ever spoken to before....I would never use a familiar term with someone I didn't know...

joeysteele 09-01-2013 02:36 PM

A lady in the supermarket I go to always calls me this odd one,'sweet peach',I quite like it but never further engage as to why.
She only does it with me,no one else I am with when anyone is shopping there with me.

I don't mind when people I don't know use nice terms though.

Yeah, I don't really even use terms of endearments myself, except with Gav and the kids and my nephews

Ages 35 upwards to a hundred although the youngest we had was a 27 year woman.

Petershaw1984 09-01-2013 05:46 PM

The patients i call love and mate tend to be over 60 as they seem to like it more than a youngish woman

mizzy25 09-01-2013 05:47 PM
