Cows trample man to death in Wiltshire

Quote:

A man has been trampled to death by cows in a field in Wiltshire and another man has been injured.

They were out walking near Winsley when they were crushed by the animals.

The injured man was airlifted to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol after two air ambulances and a road ambulance were sent to the scene.

It is thought his injuries are non-life-threatening, Wiltshire Ambulance Service said. The men's families have been informed.
I better not tell my walking friend, Janet - she's terrified of cows in fields already .....

Cherie 14-05-2013 06:52 AM

It's not unusual, especially this time of year when the cows may well have their calves with them, must be a horrific death. I've always been worried about being gored to death by a bull, so I would never enter a field of cows just in case.:joker: Sorry I know it's not funny.

Marc 14-05-2013 07:57 AM

They were planning this for months...

lostalex 14-05-2013 08:02 AM

I think i'll have a thick steak in his honor tomorrow. I've been craving a nice steak for weeks now. This is as good an excuse as any to let myself splurge.

You're always craving juicy meat in your mouth

That's true.

My dream is to suck a paraplegic guy just for the challenge. If it was a sport in the paralympic games i'd do it for my country.

I could suck a limp boiled green bean back to it's original shape.

poor man

Nedusa 14-05-2013 10:48 AM

Have you ever walked in a field past a group of Cows and normally they just move aside for you, but once in a while they just stand there and give you the evil stare !!!

Just for a second a thought flickers across your mind what if these Cows don't move..!!!

lostalex 14-05-2013 10:52 AM

Aren't herds of cows usually kept in fenced off pastures? Why were they walking through a pasture as opposed to on a road? Were the cows that trampled him his own cows? was he walking through his own pasture? or were they someone else's cows?

There are very few details in this story.

Cherie 14-05-2013 10:55 AM

The report say's they were out walking so I assume they were on a ramble. There are right of ways through some fields which would be used for livestock, obviously you enter at your own risk.

Scarlett. 14-05-2013 10:59 AM

I assume they want their milk back.

I got chased across a field by a load of cows once, had my life flashing before my eyes for a moment before my natural athleticism kicked in allowing me to outpace them and jump over the fence before they caught me

In England and Wales a public footpath is a path on which the public have a legally protected right to travel on foot. Public footpaths often form a dense network of short paths, offering a choice of routes to many different destinations. It is probable that most footpaths in the countryside are hundreds of years old or more. Many of them pass through fields with loose cattle, sheep or horses - the animals are not usually a danger, just a hazard to be avoided or approached with caution.

One cow may not kill you, but it can knock you over (heifers, in particular, can be very frisky and confrontational) and that's when the (rest of the) herd, literally, steps in .....

I'd have paid good money to see that.

Kizzy 14-05-2013 12:16 PM

I had no idea cows were so deadly

Saph 14-05-2013 12:24 PM

I walk the dog nearly everyday at our local common where there are loads of cows and they've never been a problem. I dont know much about this story but I doubt all those cows just started chasing these men for no reason :/

I was thinking that too. sounds suspicious. I think maybe they were trying to fiddle with them if you know what i mean... it's not unheard of...

2 men out on a walk? how many men do you know that just "go out on a walk" with a friend and get that close to a random herd of cattle? it's definitely a bit suspicious.

I think they were trying to **** a cow. eigther that or they were getting high. There's definitely something about this story that doesn't add up though.

As countryside walkers, myself and my male (and female) friends get that close to random herds of cattle and flocks sheep every other day - we don't bother them and they don't (usually) bother us - horses and ponies tend to be very friendly, though ..... ;)

No no that's true, I can see it's being reported because it's a rarity.

Iowa woman dies after cow attack

Published: June 20, 2011 at 8:53 AM

DES MOINES, Iowa, June 20 (UPI) -- An Iowa woman died after a being attacked by a cow on a farm in Benton County, officials said.

Killed Saturday was Jean Fee, 60, of Urbana. Her year-old grandson was uninjured.

"It's pretty unusual for a cow to become aggressive," Terry Engelken, an associate professor at Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, told Monday's Des Moines Register. "We have a few instances of [cow attacks] across the country every year -- but it's uncommon. For it to result in a fatality is very uncommon."

Matt Fee, the woman's son, said his parents and nephews often go into a pasture to feed ears of corn to the cows. Jean Fee, her husband and grandson were on such an outing when the incident occurred.

"My dad went back to the house to get my nephew a drink," Matt Fee said. "The best we can figure is the cow became aggressive, and my mom was protecting my nephew, and the cow hit her with its head and it stopped her heart."

Not that rare :

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2009/ju...blers-blunkett

Quote:

Figures reveal that attacks by cows are by no means unusual. According to data released by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), there have been 67 incidents in the past five years (up to 2009) in which a member of the public has reported being injured by cattle. In six of the cases the person was killed.

The risk is even greater for farm workers whose injuries are recorded separately. Over the same period there were 23 fatal incidents involving farmers and their employees, another 300 that resulted in "major" harm and 277 in which the injury took more than three days to heal. Far more go unreported.

arista 14-05-2013 05:47 PM

The Cows think you may attack their young.

So if you have a Dog let it go
as then the Cows will chase that
saving you.

I have been trapped by cows in a corner
but I did not panic
I waited for a chance to get away,
and I have never had a problem since
