Are you scared of flying?

Seems to be quite a common fear. My mum and my younger brother were petrified of flying when I was younger; my brother's gotten over it I think and my mum was never that bad in comparison to him but I remember one flight we were on where we went through a patch of turbulence and they both gripped onto my arms while I was calmly trying to complete a Sudoku :idc:. Flying's never bothered me.

AnnieK 06-08-2013 09:08 AM

Hate flying but it would never stop me going anywhere. I tend to sit down and put my seatbelt on and then not move for the entire flight (unless I am unable to get a window seat and people have to get passed me).

Livia 06-08-2013 09:29 AM

No, doesn't bother me at all.

Marc 06-08-2013 09:52 AM

Taking off and landing is awful :bawling:

They are the best bits! And the turbulance... I like that, it's fairgroud-ish. And it allows me to enjoy other people's terror.

Niamh. 06-08-2013 10:00 AM

No not at all, and I'm with Livia I love the landing especially, the bumpier the better

Yeah I love rattling around in a plane thousands of metres above ground.

We have so much in common we should pull :P

I hate flying, so much so I prefer to travel to Spain over land and sea. It all stems from a holiday to Florida back in 1992 the flight going out was fine, coming back was a nightmare, the turbulence was dreadful and then we hit an air pocket and the plane fell out of the sky, people on the plane screamed, it was really scary. My son who was 10 years old at the time thought it was hilarious LOL. I have since flown to Colorado and Las Vegas but I hated it and I really don't want to fly again, I like my feet firmly on the ground. You are right, fear of flying is a common thing.

Princess 06-08-2013 12:29 PM

I'd be a bit screwed if I was scared of flying since I fly back and forward to England all the time. But nah it doesn't bother me.

Kizzy 06-08-2013 12:33 PM

Yes, I'm a very nervous passenger nobody told me that the lights on a plane go out when coming into land in the dark.... I screamed my head off, and a lovely fella in a suit held my hand :D

Jesus. 06-08-2013 12:35 PM

I've had a couple of bad flying experiences, including waking up and high pitch squealing to a plane full of people looking at me as though I'd lost my mind. I've had helicopter flying lessons as my da's friend is an instructor with his own helicopter, and I found that was much better because I was upfront and had some control.

I'm a terrible passenger in a car, and I'm a terrible passenger on a plane. Basically I like having the option of being in control of my own death, and hate when that's taken away from me.

RichardG 06-08-2013 12:49 PM

I'm never scared of flying at first, thinking "what's the chances of anything going wrong? very slim!". But, then, I realise that everyone involved in a fatal crash in the past probably said the exact same thing before it too, and so I become terrified and spend the entire flight paranoid.

LOL Kizzy, your post made me chuckle, I'll have to try that if I fly again, I might get a lovely bloke to hold my hand hehe

LemonJam 06-08-2013 01:28 PM

Hate it.

CaudleHalbard 06-08-2013 01:29 PM

You're in more danger traveling in a car.

Drew. 06-08-2013 01:30 PM

absolutely hate taking off.. i'm not to bad once im in the air as long as iv got my ipod to listen to for the whole duration and i don't mind landing too much but its more of a relief that the flight is over though

Suze 06-08-2013 01:33 PM

Doesn't bother me.

Ellen 06-08-2013 01:37 PM

I hate it so i dont do it.

LikeABoatOnWater 06-08-2013 01:56 PM

I'm golden with the flying its just all the stupid stuff you have to do be forehand and making sure your on time that raises my blood pressure.

Verbal 06-08-2013 02:08 PM

I'm scared of going outside, be a job just getting me to the airport.

Samuel. 06-08-2013 02:17 PM

Love flying

CaudleHalbard 06-08-2013 02:23 PM

I love take off - the shove in the back when the plane accelerates! :p:D

LaLaLand 06-08-2013 03:41 PM

I'm terrified of taking off, but once the seatbelt sign goes off I'm fine usually unless there's turbulence, then Imma s**t it! Landing doesn't phase me either.

Samm 06-08-2013 03:47 PM

Yes I am flying on Thursday :bawling:

Black Dagger 06-08-2013 03:49 PM

Only taking off. I'm fine with everything else.

CaudleHalbard 06-08-2013 03:53 PM

Landing is about 10 times as dangerous as take off according to a programme I saw recently.

I get a little tense on landing, but only a bit. :)

Donovan. 06-08-2013 05:08 PM

When I was younger I hated flying, but since I have family on both coasts, I had to fly a lot and thought that I had gotten used to it.
Nope, I'm going to Salt Lake City soon, to see my dad, and decided to get a train ticket instead, because I don't want to fly without friends to distract me. I didn't think I'd be scared anymore, but I wasn't even going to go if I had to fly alone.

Apple202 06-08-2013 06:39 PM

I used to be when I was younger but I'm used to it now

Redway 07-08-2013 02:49 PM

No, and I don't understand those who are considering it's literally millions of times more probable that you'll be killed in a car. Unless they're absolutely petrified of getting in a car as well (which doesn't make sense either).

Harry! 07-08-2013 07:09 PM

Having been on many planes in my life I am not scared of flying, I am a little bit scared of heights but more if I am on a high boucany or looking out a window on a upper floor.

Its not really a fear of death, its the fear of heights. I could watch clips of car crashes all day, won't stop me driving to work tomorrow.

I watch something like this:

And it makes me feel sick with sweaty palms

If you're not a nervous flyer you won't understand it. I have had no bad flying experience really...my brother is a long haul pilot and flies every week so I know how safe it is but i still hate it. Phobias are irrational I guess...I prefer to be in control. Possibly a touch of claustrophobia too...once those doors shut, I am uncomfortable.

I am not too bad on landing, I look out of the window and see the tops of trees and think..well if we crash now, I might survive. Although as someone rightly said, the chance of surviving a crash on landing is less than a crash on take off...
