The sad thing about Lauren is that she is in sexual limbo. She is neither a man or a woman. If she had stayed as a male, at least she could have had homosexual relationships. (I am assuming he was gay before the penisectomy).
It is tragic that people are not counselled more thoroughly before the op because there are very very few men who do actually look like women afterwards. We have all done the nudge nudge stuff about 'iffy' women in the past, I am sure.

Lauren's mom was his sex councillor using a fake name. If you ask me, she didn't let him even realise his own sexuality. Lauren would not have any friends, and he would not have any girlfriends. So Lauren never really got a chance to find out who he was. The whole thing is very disturbing, and possibly illegal.
