English People For England - Wilshere

Quote:

Only English people should play football for England, says midfielder Jack Wilshere.
Manchester United's Adnan Januzaj could play for England if he passes Fifa's five-year residency requirement, as he is yet to commit to another country.
Midfielder Januzaj, 18, is eligible for selection by Belgium, Serbia, Albania and Turkey.
Asked about the issue, Wilshere said: "If you live in England for five years it doesn't make you English."
The 21-year-old Arsenal player added: "If I went to Spain and lived there for five years, I'm not going to play for Spain."
England boss Roy Hodgson has confirmed he has been monitoring Januzaj.
Wilshere, who earlier this week insisted he is not a smoker despite being pictured with a cigarette outside a nightclub, added: "We have to remember what we are.
"We are English. We tackle hard, are tough on the pitch and are hard to beat.
"We have great characters. You think of Spain and you think technical but you think of England and you think they are brave and they tackle hard. We have to remember that.

"The only people who should play for England are English people."
Liverpool's Raheem Sterling, born in Jamaica, and Wilfried Zaha of Manchester United, born in Ivory Coast, are part of the England Under-21 set-up along with West Brom's Saido Berahino, who left war-torn Burundi as a 10-year-old.
"It's a difficult one," said England Under-21 coach Gareth Southgate. "He [Januzaj] has not played for anyone else.
"We have lots of boys in our squad who were not born here, whose families have fled here.
"There are some wonderful stories and they are all incredibly proud to play for England.
"I'm torn with it. The world is changing. People move and work abroad. It is important to know why someone wants to play for you."
Former Football Association chairman David Bernstein said England must "play within the rules and get the best team we can".
He told BBC Radio 5 live: "There is much more fluidity in terms of population movement.
"I would say we must play within the rules but if players are eligible, I would be inclined to pick the best players we can get. Other countries do that."
Cricketers Kevin Pietersen, Matt Prior and Jonathan Trott play for England despite being born in South Africa.
Southgate added: "We seem to have embraced the cricket team that has won the Ashes, but it is a really interesting, philosophical debate."
Januzaj, who joined United in 2011 from Belgian club Anderlecht for a reported fee of nearly £300,000, was born in Brussels.
He has turned down the advances of Belgium, and has not won a cap at any level for any country.
Januzaj qualifies for Albania through his Kosovan-Albanian parents, Turkey through his grandparents and Serbia as Kosovo's independence has not been recognised by the United Nations.
Kosovo's national team are not members of Uefa or Fifa.
Fifa, the sport's governing body, states a player is eligible if "he has lived continuously for at least five years after reaching the age of 18 on the territory of the relevant association".
Poor Jack is terrified he will no longer be the golden boy. The bits in bold too. There is why England will never play good football. No point blaming Roy, no one is changing it lol

Anyway. Not like Adnan will choose England, but what do we think? Is Wilshere right, or should Adnan have the right to save this country from being mediocre? :)

MTVN 09-10-2013 09:51 AM

Don't think he really thought about what he was saying, mainly commenting on how stupid it is that we're already hoping to get this guy to play for us when he's only been in the country a couple of years atm and saying we shouldn't make him a British citizen purely so he can play for our national team

In general though he's wrong, we'd lose a big chunk of our best athletes if we only allowed those who were actually born in this country

Jemal 09-10-2013 10:26 AM

When i read this yesterday, I just lol'd. Anyone whos watched
This season can already see wilshere isnt even arsenals golden boy anymore. Ramsey Ozil (Cazorla at a push aswell) >> wilshere.

So hes already scared but hey.. Shows he only thinks about himself and not the team.. Who says Adnan doesn't know how to tackle hard? Or whatever.. ****test stereotype ever.

Twat.

Legend killer 09-10-2013 10:50 AM

Silly boy Jack if you use this the Cricket and Rugby team would be nearly as pointless as the football team and you wouldn't even have a cycling team

has Januzaj commented or anything since all of this call up debate started happening? will be interesting to know where he stands on it all, honestly don't think we'll be able to find a loop hole to allow him to play for us anyway because of the 5 year education thing which he hasn't done anywhere close to in this country

Legend killer 09-10-2013 10:51 AM

ps: should be worrying as about Ravel Jack he is coming for you place son

Shaun 09-10-2013 10:54 AM

Brother Leon 09-10-2013 11:40 AM

Funniest thing is he just assumed Adnan is some sort of pussy when he loves the aggressive side more than most the squad

Legend killer 09-10-2013 11:46 AM

We actually probs have/had the best talent of Centre mids in world football but you wouldn't think that looking at the team sheet FML

Jemal 09-10-2013 11:50 AM

Possebom (before his broken leg) > Wilshere.

Petrucci can **** off. Thinks he has the right to punch The GREAT LUIS NANI.

Legend killer 09-10-2013 11:57 AM

People forget before injuries and Fergie ****ing him up Fat Ando DESTROYED both Gerrard and Fabregas.

I'm not even sure why but I really dislike Wilshere

King Gizzard 09-10-2013 03:23 PM

oh wait yeah I know why, moans all the time on the pitch like a little cry baby, and when he has a bad game people blame it on him being not match fit or his ankle

Drew. 09-10-2013 03:27 PM

He's turned arrogant and up himself recently but he's still a great footballer

More off field football politics nonsense, sensationalized by the media, I can't believe what i've just seen, Eamonn Holmes interviewing The Home secretary Thersa May and at the end of the interview asking her what she thought about it, ridiculous.

Wilshire is paid ridiculous amounts of money to play football, I just want to see him do that thanks, I couldn't give a shining sh*te what his opinion of a non event are.

By the way, while the media are sensationalizing non stories like this, their not promoting up and coming sporting events, in just over two weeks time, The Rugby League World Cup repeat World Cup Will be getting underway, did any of you even know that? tell me, is this story about Wilshire bigger then that?

What next? are they gonna tell us what Leighton Baines had for breakfast? or what toothpaste Gary Cahill uses?

There should be some distinction between those who've been in the country for a few years, and desperate bids made to players like this where he's another 3 years away from qualification. It's small time.

Someone like Victor Moses had a genuine reason to be called up for England before Nigeria got him, but this kid? Not a chance.

He's supposed to be waiting for Kosovo to eventually be given the full national team. They already have youth teams, but are now on the road to a full international side.

RL is a terrible game. Run into your opponents 4 times then boot it.

Mate I've watched him 3 times this season. And hes been our best winger by far.
Vs liverpool first match back from injury. Best player for us in the first half, ripped kolo toure to shreads.
Ok lost 2-1 to west brom. Nani was our only good player lol. But most people just watch MOTD. So don't see how well the dude actually played. If Hernandez was alive twice in the box, he woulda got two assists. If Afroman knew the offside rule he would of created the equaliser aswell.
And vs Sunderland him and Adnan were our only threats.

*pats back*

Wilshere has like 90 prem appearances with like 3 goals and 8 assists LMFAO. That is shocking.

And how many Rugby League games have you attended or full games have you watched, to form that view? Why don't you lie to me and tell me you've seen lots and attended lots of games.

Yes because more people are interested in Jack Wilshere then they are about Rugby League on the whole, you could say he himself is bigger then the whole sport, probably more Arsenal fans then actual rugby league supporters

There only more interested, because that's what the media shoves down peoples throats.

Novo 10-10-2013 08:40 AM

the newspaper sales would be at an all time low if Rugby League was making the Sports headlines everyday

The same was probably said about Rugby Union in 2003, then England won the World cup, and so the Media jumped on the bandwagon and said we'll have a piece of that, Johnny Wilkinson became one of the most famous people in the Country at the time, Bus rooftop celebrations in London, Knighthoods and MBE's, Television shows ect ect, because the media sensationalized it.

lol.. rugby Union is in a different league when it comes to the world cup, when people think of the Rugby World Cup they instantly think of Union and not League and hence why every match is shown on BBC/ITV like the football world cup

I've watched some - never attended a live game, but I like sport. I'd guess most people who post in the sports forum have at least watched part of a game of RL. The fact that hardly anyone knows the RLWC is about to start kind of suggests that most people don't really like RL. It is a dire game in my opinion.

My point was, whether you like the sport or not, should a nothing throw away comment by Jack Wilshire, be given far far more media coverage then an upcoming sporting World Cup being held on these Shores?

MTVN 10-10-2013 12:00 PM

Probably hard to care about the RL World Cup because it's a very minor sport internationally really, looking at the past winners before 08 when NZ won it's only ever been won by England and Australia and even then we haven't won it since 1972 lol

For me (i'm sure we're all different) but for me personally, i find it hard to care that Jack Wilshire has an opinion, and i'm much more interested in an up and coming sporting World Cup of IMO the greatest game of all.

1972 the last time England won, well they're six years better of then the Football team.
