A couple of questions for people who believe in a god.

First one, can your god read your mind? Like does your god have the ability to tell what you're thinking.

How does the prayer thing work? Is it like if you want something, you pray x amount of times, or say certain prayers and your god grants you that wish.

I don't believe in gods at all and I struggle to get to grips with the whole concept.

MeMyselfAndI 11-11-2013 10:05 PM

I believe in god but idk

MeMyselfAndI 11-11-2013 10:06 PM

Turn that frown upside down Nate

I'm just curious about the powers of gods, rather than wanting to debate religion.

Kyle 11-11-2013 10:17 PM

I watched Jason and the Argonauts and there was that sexy woman God that talked to Jason telepathically so surely she can read minds.

Stu 11-11-2013 10:19 PM

I'll have to ask my framed picture of Bradley Walsh.

smeagol 11-11-2013 10:21 PM

Yeah I don't pray or go to church or anything, I just believe something must have created the world & that must be god

GiRTh 11-11-2013 10:23 PM

Its up to the individual. The only thing is you have to believe, there are no hard and fast rules. Some people think God is all seeing and all knowing where as other think their God is their for guidance.

The reason for the thread is kinda because of a fantasy story like that, earlier in the year I read a book about these gods who could read the minds of all the people in the world, except for in one particular place, and that was where a heathen witch and wizard hid out.

fingers 11-11-2013 10:25 PM

Well, he's pretty damned old now!

smeagol 11-11-2013 10:25 PM

What book was it? I like fantasy and if it has an audio version I'll listen to it.

Cool, thanks for the answer. And it kinda makes part of it clearer to me.

There must have been a creator, and that is God, no one can create the creator, they just exist

It was the 2nd one in the series, The Last of the Wilds, that she brought up the concept.

I'm pretty sure you could find audio versions.

There are a lot of questions but the thread will get massively derailed if we go into that but Thankyou for your contribution.

MTVN 11-11-2013 10:32 PM

I guess when people pray it's not supposed to be a case of demand so that if they just pray for it enough it'll happen, it's more done as a gesture of hope, ultimately everything is in God hands and he must have a reason for everything he does but they will pray to show their commitment to God and hope that he will listen to them

Girth I shouldn't have asked that question we will end up derailing GypsyGoths thread if we go into the origins of the universe.

Thanks, I'll check them out. I prefer the audio versions cos I can just lie down and listen. It's not full of romance is it?

You do realise you're not the thread creator?

Thanks for reminding me bright spark but it's bad etiquette to take somebody's thread massively off topic which a debate on that subject will end up doing. My Thankyou for your contribution was thanking you for giving an answer to my question.

I agree. The fact that someone believes is good enough. Its something that cannot be explained and thus why non believers cant get their heads around it.

Brother Leon 11-11-2013 10:39 PM

1. Yep. Most say you can even be judged off your thoughts etc.

2. Praying can be done for a number of reasons. Could be done simply as a way of worship. Could be done in the hope something happens or doesn't happen. Could be done during a tough time in some sort of plea for help or answers, or could even be done after you feel you sinned and are in regret. There are a number of reasons for it really, not just one.

fingers 11-11-2013 10:39 PM

Yeah, some several billion years ago, God was bored so he thought , "I know, I'll smoke a Joint" ergo he struck a match and "BOOM" "oh my" he exclaimed "that was a BIG BANG"

It's almost like the power of positive thinking but with a god as a go between for the desired outcome to occur.

:D well there is a pretty big romance storyline in it, but there's so much more too, and most of the focus in on the wonderful land and characters the author created.

Kyle 11-11-2013 10:41 PM

There better be lots of battles and violence and dragons GypsyGoth or you will end up being the proud owner of some semi used audio books :bouncy:

Kyle 11-11-2013 10:44 PM

It would be interesting to note if the Greeks, Romans or Ancient Egyptians had A specific God that read the mind of its people or if they were all capable of it.

Thanks :worship:

In a way it'd be reassuring to be never alone but also terrifying never having your own space.

And I've never actually prayed, but I do think it's a good thing in the way that it helps people focus on what they want out of life.

joeysteele 11-11-2013 10:46 PM

I am a Roman Catholic and come from a fairly strong religious upbringing, however I cannot accept a great deal of what is taught by the Church.

My faith has gone to be something very simple, everything I do, I need to plan and all major things need careful planning, so I am left with the question that I can only answer with, something created something and somehow this world came into being as it is.

Who/what for instance is nature,is that the creating force but maybe that is the sort of thing that a 'god' for want of a better word is made of.

I do believe in some great energy force, I cannot answer if such a force can read minds but I cannot disprove any of those things as to whether they are true or not.
It is one great and amazing mystery to me.

As for praying, yes, in times of stress or great sadness, I do turn to my 'faith' more, I do ask for help and ask it for others too who are in difficulties and so yes at times I do pray.
I don't expect prayers to be answered or even be sure they are heard by anyone/anything but I have found them upbuilding and helpful at times.

I don't know how to answer the question really, as I said I have a simple faith but I do know for sure, anything needs careful planning and when I look at the World and watch life as it unfolds and goes on, I cannot just think that it all happened by accident.

:D there are battles and fights. But I think the books mainly deals with the gods' relationship to the world and a priestess as she learns about them.

GypsyGoth 11-11-2013 10:58 PM

Thanks for the detailed response Joey.

There was a show on recently about a mathematician looking at how numbers reoccur throughout nature. And through his eyes it was like you could see a system there in the evolution, like it was all planned.

I think I'm agnostic, in the way that I don't know if there's a god, or gods or noting. And I don't think it's something I'll find out.

It is in reality a fascinating and interesting subject, you asked good questions, ones that require thinking about.

As you say above, it is maybe not something you or we are likely to find out.

fingers 11-11-2013 11:06 PM

As an Agnostic, I don't believe that we'll ever find out.
