Merry Clayton's contributions to this is probably the one vocal that blows me away every time I hear it.

Particularly 2:43 onwards.

Spoiler:

Not necessarily impressive in a technical sense but understated and chilling. Possibly my favourite vocal performance ever.

Anything by Donny Hathaway, really.

I respect the talent but I'm not big on big time kinda singery singers as a general rule so this is just my personal favorite vocalists ...

Natasha Khan. See also : Moon & Moon. She's a bit like Kate Bush put through a Cure machine I guess. Haunting melodies, very earthy, pagan feel to most of her music.

Martin Gore, the mind behind the Mode. See also : One Caress. I adore Dave - he is the best frontman of all time to me - but Gore has the voice of an angel. It's absolutely spellbinding and seems to get better with age.

David Gilmour, Pink Floyd. See also : Breath. He has great harmonies with Roger Waters but Dave is the principal singer, really and always carries this beautiful blend of English angst and floaty, space time melancholy.

If you need an explanation, you probably shouldn't listen to music.

Bjork, Grimes, Radiohead etc etc too but I CBA finding links all night.
