How would you define a 'chav'...

..I thought about making this thread a while ago because even though obviously I'm aware of the reference...I have to admit that I'm not really fully sure what a 'chav' is...anyway, I saw a similar thread on another forum this morning which reminded me...so what are your views of what a 'chav' is...?...

Shaun 02-12-2013 06:37 AM

an aggressive, uneducated and unemployed person found roaming around town during the middle of weekdays with pitbulls (or prams, if they're female), carrier bags full of beer and wearing sports clothing despite not playing any

Ammi 02-12-2013 06:40 AM

..if they weren't aggressive but the other things applied, would they still be a 'chav'..is aggression a big part of it..?..

Shaun 02-12-2013 06:46 AM

yeah i think the word comes from "council housing and violent" so that's what i associate it with

you can tell your a teacher:joker:

Ammi 02-12-2013 06:51 AM

..that's really interesting and more or less how my sons describe it..(the aggression..)..but I think that it's one of those things that different people would have differing definitions, which is why I've always been a bit confused by it...

..and then there's the 'stereotypical chav in a humour way..'..like Vicky Pollard etc...who may talk aggression but don't really seem actually physically aggressive...

I don't think the kids call them chavs nowadays, I think they have a new term for them. I remember chavs were known as Townies before the term came along.

I don't think they are chav's at that point, its when they start hanging around the streets, spitting and swearing, they then go home to their parent's but mostly parent as in one!, who is spitting and swearing at them.

A mean person wearing tracksuits and that

King Gizzard 02-12-2013 11:48 AM

Someone who plays music through their phone without earphones on public transport/walking down the street

RichardG 02-12-2013 12:00 PM

The idiots who hang around streets drinking alcohol, usually pretty aggressive, probably owns an aggressive dog, probably gets into many fights, people who are just generally not nice people. My economics teacher always moans at the word 'chav' believing that it's a reference to peoples social class but I don't know anyone who uses the term in that way. One of the biggest chavs at my old high school who got expelled in year 10 has a mum who is a dentist... It's entirely in reference to peoples attitude IMO.

There is no such thing. Such an annoying word. Especially when people are branded chavs when they wouldn't even be near to one.

Kizzy 02-12-2013 01:39 PM

I think it's one of those indefinable things... like 'snob'

Livia 02-12-2013 01:45 PM

I'm going with What Shaun said.

Niamh. 02-12-2013 01:57 PM

It's a very British word but the first thing that pops into my head when I hear the word is the typical Jeremy Kyle guest ^

Kizzy 02-12-2013 01:57 PM

Thinking about it I think it's someone who's ignorant and a bit socially inept. I mean chav not snob, although it describes them both actually

Common signs of chavism.

They use the following turn of phrases: brap, blad, innit, he's nicked mi Giro

Support Liverpool and live in London

Support Liverpool and live in Liverpool

Hunt in packs (more than whoever they are targeting)

Listen to speed garage

If a shell suit is their smart clothes in their wardrobe

They like a good bit of pointing

You see them pointing and they have more than 5 fingers

Education finished at 12 for them

They have a sofa in their front garden

They are standing outside a corner shop but don't have a bag

There's a few signs, just remember don't approach because they have been known to bite. Keep your distance and don't use eye to eye contact.

This, though we call them scallies up here. Given what the V stands for it's pretty safe to say they tend to be anti-social and violent.
