Six Dead After Glasgow Bin Lorry Crashes Into Shoppers

Quote:

Police are called to a "serious incident" in Glasgow where a bin lorry is understood to have crashed into a group of pedestrians.

Local reports say the lorry mounted the pavement and crashed into the side of the Millenium Hotel in George Square.

The Daily Record newspaper says the accident happened as a crowd of Christmas shoppers were waiting to cross the road outside Queen Street station.

There are understood to be fatalities and the casualties are estimated to be in double figures.

As many as six ambulances are at the scene, along with the police and fire service.

A Police Scotland spokesman confirmed there is an "ongoing serious incident" in Glasgow's George Square close to Queen Street Station.

Roads surrounding George Square, in the city centre, have been closed.

Nope

We shop there though and that's the station we get off at because the parking and one way systems in Glasgow are beyond atrocious so it's much easier to get the train

andybigbro 22-12-2014 03:20 PM

I am always on that street!

It so sad! :( right next to queen street station :( such a sad sad day! :( horrific! those poor people and families

Firewire 22-12-2014 03:38 PM

Absolutely shocking. Can't believe it's only just in the city centre. Those people enjoying the Christmas festivities or trying to get some last minute gifts. Heartbreaking.

How awful... I feel so sorry for them. Poor Glasgow... the horrible helicopter crash last year around Christmastime, and then this.

GiRTh 22-12-2014 06:56 PM

Terrible news.

Jord 22-12-2014 07:46 PM

So sad. I was in town earlier today and was actually supposed to be heading round to George Square so it's scary to think of. RIP to the 6 who lost their lives.

Former Leeds, Burnley and QPR defender Clark Carlisle was rushed to hospital early this morning after being hit by a lorry.

Carlisle was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary with life threatening injuries. The incident took place near Bishopthorpe in North Yorkshire at 7.30am on Monday. The road was then closed to allow the air ambulance to arrive at the scene, Mail Online reported.

The reason for the accident remains unclear, however a police spokeswoman told the website they were “pursuing all avenues”.

During his 16-year career, Carlisle made over 500 appearances for nine clubs.

He has also been praised for his keen intellect, having achieved 10 Grade A GCSEs, and was the first footballer to appear on Channel 4's Countdown.

Following his retirement, he has regularly appeared on ITV as a pundit, including at this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

He is also a leading ambassador for anti-discrimination group Kick It Out.

It's horrific beyond words, my heart aches for those families affected by it.

Firewire 22-12-2014 11:14 PM

They've turned the Christmas lights off in George Square as a mark of respect. Really nice gesture, I think.

Jake. 22-12-2014 11:16 PM

Horrific.. R.I.P to all of those who lost their lives

Such a shame. :( I've seen a few people post on Facebook about a girl that they knew being one of the victims. This whole thing is so close to home and would be awful no matter when it happened but for it to have happened so close to Christmas makes it even worse.

Kizzy 23-12-2014 10:09 AM

Glasgow had the Clutha tragedy a year ago and now this :(

This poor family. Someone lost both their parents and their child at the same time

RIP

Livia 23-12-2014 10:59 PM

Jesus Vicky, that's heart-breaking.

Ammi 24-12-2014 07:44 AM

..I know this would be completely devastating no matter what time of year something like this happened ..but I think at Christmas time, we're all so focused and concentrated on making things so special for the people we love that it's so easy to forget how lives can be changed in a split second and how everything can be ripped out of us and away from us....it's inconceivable to know how the families and friends must be feeling right now...it really does break your heart...

coffee 24-12-2014 11:27 PM

I was near when it happen, was on Buchanan Street with my Dad! We heared screams, and not like screams... It was proper seeing death screams it was horrific the kind when you know something serious has happened! RIP everyone :'( this was a very sad day for Glasgow. It reminded me a lot of last year around this time when the helicopter crashed into the pub killing almost all inside :'(

GypsyGoth 24-12-2014 11:34 PM

Ithinkiloveyoutoo 24-12-2014 11:37 PM

Very sad indeed. But i'm a bit confused as to why it's such headline news? Does Glasgow not get a lot of tragedy? It is a tragedy of course but they're acting like it was a terrorist attack. It was an accident?

RIP to all.
