The trouble is that she stood up to no-one.

She was supposed to have stood up for her friends. She was close to Richard in the first few weeks. Where was she when Richard was having the big blow up with Sezer (Hootchgate)? Hiding behind the bedroom door with Grace!

Can you imagine her in a full blown argument with Sezer. He would have taken her apart.

Really, "Meet her elderly father" is the meaning that you want to pretend comes from that. Like by all means mount a defense of your favourite but do a better job than that. It was a clear threat of violence.
