Homophobic Tom Jones?

Quote:

Sir Tom Jones has been blasted by fans after suggesting that he believes homosexuals are not 'normal'.

The ageing crooner admitted he used to be prejudiced towards gay people when he first arrived in London - and that he was so uncomfortable in their company that he even contemplated returning to Wales.

He also said he struggled to accept his first-ever music producer, the late Joe Meek, because of his sexuality, and became paranoid about his own managers and whether they were gay or not.

In a clumsy interview with The Big Issue, the 75-year-old said: ‘I was ready for most aspects of the music industry but, when I met [him - Joe Meek], that threw me off a bit, because he was a homosexual.

‘I thought: “Wait a minute, is the London scene — the people who run British showbusiness — are there a lot of homosexuals involved here? Because, if so, I’m going back to Cardiff.”'

He added: ‘When I signed with Decca, and Peter Sullivan became my manager . . . I said: “You’re not one of these queer fellows, are you?” and he said: “What are you on about?”

'I became paranoid, you see. I wondered, was that required to make a hit record?’

Sir Tom goes on to express his relief at discovering that most men in the music business were, as he described it, ‘normal’.

Because I can read and can see that the things mentioned were all mentioned using a past tense, equaling to him not feeling like that anymore, considering his age and when he first experienced London and the gay scene, it was still seen as abnormal by the majority of people, because it was illegal, it's not his fault he was born in that era, I'm not going to judge a person in today's world by thoughts they had in the past and have since changed.

Dollface 22-10-2015 08:29 PM

When did he say these things though?

most straight male's have that perception at first, its just in are nature, that is what tom jones is trying to say, but the liberal left have nothing better to do, than start empty arguments, and twist every word that is spoken, in todays world, you have to lie, rather than tell what you really think, or believe in, gary oldman was nearly chased out of hollywood for saying that pc liberal hollywood was a load of bull****, and he said that people should get over mel gibsons drunken rant, tom is going to get the same treatment as oldman, because you can't dare tell the truth in today's world, famous people are paid big money for being puppets and brain dead zombies, the world makes no sense today, because they only want you to tell them in what they agree in, or believe in, if tom had said that he loves gays all his life, this would never be a big deal would it, tom jones has made his money, and he is fed up in being a puppet,

:clap1::clap1::clap1:

This was nearly 60 years ago and we're talking about a young naive kid from rural Pontypridd in Glamorgan - about as far removed from the cosmopolitan 'switched on' hedonistically chaotic 'cool' which was London in the '60's.

I remember my 'cultural' shock and mixed emotions the first time I stepped into a 'Gay' club as a young straight guy unaccustomed to and unaware of, such intense 'open' homosexuality, when I witnessed all these muscular 'Clone Zone' leather-clad moustachioed men passionately 'snogging'. I had hitherto thought that 'homosexualty' was relatively miniscule and involved one 'butch' male and another very 'effeminate' male, when it did occur.

After this, for a time, I remember being suspicious of every normal-looking man who happened to strike up innocent conversations with me whilst standing at urinals, or sitting on trains etc. -- It is a fact. Did it make me homophobic then? NO. Does it make me homophobic now to admit the truth of back then? No.

His reaction is nothing more than that of a provincial 'innocent' suddenly thrust into another totally alien world, much like a child wandering into his parents bedroom and catching them in the act - all that naked, sweaty, grappling is perfectly natural, but the child will not automatically accept it as such, and it will be a shock.

Tom is describing it has it was. He has not a homophobic bone in his body - just honest ones.

He is an icon - move along, find another target.

 He KNOWS that NOW Rob, but you have to remember that back then he was 'The Boy From Nowhere' and far from The Green, Green Grass Of Home'. It's a bit of a shock to ask 'What's New Pussycat' and be pointed towards a gay man and told to 'Help Yourself', or be approached by a transvestite who claims 'She's A Lady' and invites you to 'Love Me Tonight'.

Are people overlooking the fact ,this was the 50/60s, a LOT of people thought like that then,I am no Tom Jones fan,but I can see what he means if it goes back that far, people weren't as open then as they are now, we move on and progress,at least we should do,having a child out of wedlock was frowned upon then, give the bloke a break,he could have just said nowt!!!

smudgie 24-10-2015 03:36 PM

 I suppose you had to live through those times to understand where he is coming from.
Perfectly normal attitude of the day, especially going down to the big smoke.
Thank heavens we are all more enlightened in this day and age.
