A landscape gardener has appeared in court today charged with the murder and rape of schoolgirl Kayleigh Haywood.
The 15-year-old sparked a huge police search when she disappeared last Friday after being dropped off outside Ibstock Community College, Leicestershire, by her parents. Kayleigh’s body was discovered in a field on Wednesday night a few hundred yards from where she was last seen. Horticulturalist Stephen Beadman was charged with murder and rape last night. He made a brief appearance at Leicester Magistrates’ Court today accused of the offences. He is accused of raping and killing her on November 15 and spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth during a short hearing. He did not enter a plea. Beadman, 28, of Ibstock, who was wearing a grey jumper and grey tracksuit bottoms, was remanded in custody to appear at Leicester Crown Court later on December 18. Beadman’s next door neighbour, Luke Harlow, also made a brief appearance accused of grooming Kayleigh, of Measham, Leicestershire, and two counts of sexual activity with a child. The offences are said to have taken place between November 12 and November 16. The 27-year-old, who also spoke only to confirm his details, was remanded in custody to appear at Leicester Crown Court on the same date as Beadman. Neither man applied for bail. Last night Kayleigh's family said they were ‘utterly devastated’ last night after police revealed a body found in a field is believed to be that of the 15-year-old. Police made the discovery late on Wednesday on farmland less than half a mile from the school where Kayleigh was last seen in Ibstock, Leicestershire, a week ago. In a statement, Kayleigh’s family said: ‘We are heartbroken, grief stricken and as a family utterly devastated. We cannot even begin to thank the local communities and wider public for their messages of support which have helped us through the last week. We are also grateful for the publicity the media have given to Kayleigh’s disappearance and the desperate search to find her.’ Kayleigh’s mother, Stephanie, 36, a mother-of-six, added on Facebook: ‘I’m numb and can’t get it that it’s actually real.’ The teenager’s father Martin Whitby, 57, from nearby Coalville, changed his Facebook profile picture to a photo of his daughter. Kayleigh lived with her mother in Measham, five miles from Ibstock. She had been dropped off in the town last Friday evening to meet her best friend, and had told her mother she would be staying with the girl for the weekend, something she did regularly. ..I mean, how would you even know that about a neighbour, how would that even come up in conversation and the odds of it as well...
..her family/parents are not only living this nightmare world now but they'll have to live all of these things in the court case... |
So awful as it seems she held for a few days they made her ring home on Saturday morning, evil personified, the poor girl must have been terrified
