Big Brother to remain on TV3 in Ireland until 2018

Ireland's national television broadcaster RTE are understood to be in talks with the makers of Big Brother to air the hit show, according to reports.

The company's rivals TV3 have received massive ratings with Big Brother and Celebrity Big Brother over the past 12 months.

And it is now believed that RTE are in talks with makers Endemol Shine to air the show here.

A source told the Irish Sun: “Big Brother has been around a long time but it works brilliantly attracting the young audience RTE2 are after.

"It also produces hundreds of hours of footage which can air across RTE and all their digital formats.

Despite TV3's current deal remaining for another season, RTE are understood to be hoping to sign a long-term contract with makers Endemol Shine.

A source added: “This is like sporting rights for TV stations.

“They come and go. Will X Factor be on ITV next year? Who knows? A station might lose a big show but another new show comes along to take its place.”

That could be huge for Big Brother - RTÉ is Ireland's national broadcaster which could open the show up to a huge audience.

Why are you so horrid to the Irish when references like this are made for them to air the UK one over there? why should they have their own series?

He did say because he would like to watch it though, I don't think he meant to be rude

I don't see why they shouldn't, it's a different country after all, other close countries like BBUS and Can have their own one

I think that there were issues with uploads of CBB17 (TV3 were taking down YouTube channels with the uploads on iirc)

Yeah there was a youtube channel I've always relied on for when I miss eps but this year their account got loads of copyright strikes and each new one they made would get taken down after a few days so eventually they had to give up and stop uploading :fist:

They can't - Channel 5's rights for Big Brother are for Big Brother UK and Ireland. Applicants from Ireland are accepted into our show, meaning it's part of the franchise.

If TV3/RTE really wanted to, they probably could do it, by re-arranging contracts with C5 or whatever, but as much as I would like to see a Big Brother Ireland, I can guarantee it would be terrible.

Almost all Irish reality type shows are aimed at families and air at like 7pm. It would be terrible I'd imagine. This is if RTE had it.

TV3, on the other hand, would make it literally TOWIE or The Only Way Is Essex.

TV3 might do a good job with it but you're right about RTE

It's now understood that TV3 have renewed their contract, meaning that it won't be moving to RTÉ.

Quote:

TV3 has secured the rights to air Big Brother 2016 in the Republic of Ireland, bbspy understands.

The broadcaster became the Irish home of BBUK last May ahead of the ‘Timebomb’ series, but its initial one-year deal expired after January’s Celebrity run.

Soon afterwards a report claimed that, while TV3 was set to hang on to the show this summer, rival network RTE wanted to poach it after it proved a ratings success in the country.

Both sides have been quiet since then, but a Big Brother source informs bbspy that TV3 chiefs have indeed now signed a deal to air the seventeenth regular series, which Channel 5 today revealed is set to begin in the week commencing Saturday 4th June.

TV3 has yet to officially confirm the news, but with the launch now a matter of weeks away, an announcement is thought to be imminent.

Timebomb was the first series of Big Brother to air in the Emerald Isle in five years, after Irish fans lost access to the show when it moved to C5 in 2011. TV3 had repeatedly attempted to acquire the rights, but was unsuccessful until last year, when it lost several key programmes to UTV Ireland.

I'd love the sound of an Irish Big Brother... Do you think they would air it here?

Marsh. 20-05-2016 09:24 PM

The original article said RTV2 anyway, so it wasn't going to air on RTV.

zakman440 26-05-2016 12:21 PM

It's now been confirmed that Big Brother and Celebrity Big Brother will remain on TV3 until 2018.

Quote:

TV3 has secured the Irish broadcast rights to the ultimate reality show, Big Brother, produced by Initial (part of the Endemol Shine Group) for Channel 5 in the UK.
The exclusive three year partnership penned with Endemol Shine Group will see TV3 and 3e acquire both Big Brother and Celebrity Big Brother, hosted by Emma Willis alongside Big Brother’s Bit On The Side presented by Rylan Clark-Neal until 2018.

TV3 brought Big Brother back to Irish TV screens in 2015. Its return to mainstream terrestrial TV was a ratings winner for the group with audiences reaching a series high of 541,700.

The hugely popular reality TV show will return to TV3 and 3e on Tuesday 7th June from 9pm. This series will be followed by a new series of Celebrity Big Brother.

Speaking about the exciting news, TV3 Group Managing Director, Pat Kiely said: “We are delighted to have secured Big Brother for the next three years on TV3 and 3e. Its unpredictable nature makes it compulsive viewing that transfers to impressive ratings. Off the back of our Euro 2016 deal, this summer looks to be a bumper one for TV3.”

The reality blockbuster originally launched in the Netherlands more than 17 years ago and continues to be a hit in the UK, USA, Italy, Spain, Canada and Israel as well as in Latin America, Scandinavia, Africa and Asia. Across 2015, 31 series of Big Brother aired in more than 20 countries. Big Brother and Celebrity Big Brother have aired on Channel 5 in the UK since 2011.
