Pro-gun activist Florida mum is shot by her 4yr old son...

A high-profile pro-gun activist was shot in the back by her four-year-old son after he found her pistol lying on the back seat of her truck just 24 hours after he boasted about his shooting skills online.

Jamie Gilt, 31, who posts about firearms on her social media accounts was driving through Putnam County, Jacksonville, Florida, on Tuesday in her truck when she was wounded after the toddler picked up the weapon and shot her in the back.

It came just a day after she said the youngster would get 'jacked up' before a shooting practice on a page dedicated to her musings on Second Amendment rights.

On the profile Jamie Gilt for Gun Sense she wrote: 'Even my 4 year old gets jacked up to target shoot with the .22'.

She reportedly believes she has the right to shoot anyone who threatens her family - and plans to teach her offspring the same mentality.

According to CBS47, Gilt was on her way to pick up a horse when the shooting unfolded.

Her four-year-old son picked up a loaded .45 semi-automatic handgun from the back seat, pointed it towards his mother and pulled the trigger.

The powerful round went through the front seat and passed through Gilt's body .

Gilt flagged down a passing Sheriff's deputy and told him that she had been shot.

Deputies recovered a .45 semi-automatic handgun from the floor of the truck. They are satisfied that the round was fired from inside the vehicle.

Gilt and her son had been travelling to pick up a horse from a relative when the accident happened

Putman County Sheriff's office spokesman Joseph Wells said a deputy noticed a truck with a horse trailer driving erratically: 'As the deputy slowed to check on the vehicle, he observed an adult female in the driver’s seat motioning to him as if she needed assistance.

'The deputy ran to the vehicle and quickly determined that the driver had been shot.

'The deputy notified the dispatcher of the situation and Putnam County Fire / Rescue was dispatched.

'The deputy provided first aid until the arrival of paramedics. The victim was transported to University of Florida Health in Gainesville and was last reported to be in stable condition.

'The only other occupant of the vehicle was the victim’s four-year-old son, who was unharmed.

Before being transported to the emergency room, the victim told deputies that her son had accidentally shot her.

'The investigation by Major Crimes Unit Detectives and the analysis of the crime scene confirmed that the victim was accidentally shot by the young boy who was sitting in the back seat of the vehicle.

'The young man was reunited with other family members and Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Victim Services Specialists continue to work with the family.

'The Florida Department of Children and Family Services are being notified and the investigation into how the child came to be in possession of the handgun is ongoing.'

According the Florida Times Union, the responding deputy noticed the boy was not strapped to the booster seat in the car when he arrived at the scene.

Wells said: 'We’re satisfied that this is not a criminal shooting.'

However Gilt may face criminal charges if the State Attorney's Office determine there was negligence on how the child obtained the firearm.

What a ****ing moron. She should be prosecuted for leaving a deadly weapon lying around like that where her 4 year old son can easily get his hands on it. She's very lucky he didn't end up shooting himself

Exactly, he could easily have shot himself, OR shot her in the head causing a crash that would have killed him and potentially other people too. Total madness. I'd be willing to bet she'll still be "pro guns" though, she'll just talk about the importance of storing them safely.

Ammi 10-03-2016 11:17 AM

..actually from what I can find, she was mainly active on a Facebook campaign/had quite a following there but the account has since been deleted and the most criticism she's getting is from other pro-gun people for her idiocy because obviously this is the last thing that they would have wished for, with their pro-gun arguments...

Who has a .45 rattling around with no safety on? The woman should have her licence revoked and never returned.

...I don't think it's all about his mum Arista, even though they're both going to be ok physically, we have no idea of any potential long term emotional effects on her son at knowing that it could have resulted in his mum's death, even though no fault is his...there was no 'good' to come out of this...

Jessica. 10-03-2016 11:49 AM

She clearly has no respect for safety. First of all, she says she uses guns in case someone threatens her family but she doesn't strap her son into his seat? :umm2:
Second of all, why the hell would there be a gun in the back seat in the first place? It just doesn't make sense, I fear for that child's safety most of all. The mother is just a moron.

Actually, I'm not sure about Ireland but we've had our insurance premiums put up now because men thought we were getting more favourable treatment and had a little whine about it. Instead of them getting cheaper insurance, ours was increased.

It killed Sheila's Wheels...

Actually, the stats are sort of in favour of women being "worse" (less skilled) drivers (due to less spacial awareness) but men are more aggressive drivers. Women are more likely to have "fender-benders" type bumps and scrapes causing minor cosmetic damage, whereas when men have accidents they tend to be down to recklessness and therefore more likely to cause significant damage to vehicles / other property, which is of course more expensive, hence the higher insurance. Same reason that it costs more for teens / early 20's, even compared to brand-new drivers who are older. Kids (especially teenage boys) get over-confident on winding roads and end up flipping their car / putting it through a metal fence... which is usually going to be a "several thousand £ write off" situation rather than a "£200 new bumper" situation.

:wavey:

Women's is still cheaper though, my wife's is a good 30% less than mine in identical circumstances. I thought what killed Sheila's Wheels was being told that they couldn't be exclusively for women, and had to offer insurance for anyone...

Which I don't really understand, either. Surely they should be able to offer insurance to whoever they want

Sounds about right

I used to think it was sexist but its proven that women have less accidents than men so I would say the cheaper premiums were probably fair. Kinda ike those who have a few years no claims get it cheaper.

And of course other peoples wouldn't be lowered...but they will be happy aslong as people who were getting it a bit cheaper have to pay more. Quite spiteful that mind :S

To be fair, every female driver having higher insurance premiums is surely worth it to be rid of those adverts...

Pity about the "bonza" deals though.

Men are less careful drivers, women are less skilled drivers :hehe:.

All in general, of course. There are some brilliant women drivers and some awful male drivers. My best friend wrote off a car by hitting a lamp-post whilst trying to reverse it round a roundabout

It's more like a "catch" I guess. Like they can imply refusal by being like "Hi Mary! Your insurance quote is £450. Bob, yours is... err... £20,000."

Northern Monkey 10-03-2016 01:49 PM

Me and my lad watched a woman yesterday grind the **** out of her gears trying to find reverse and then back into a wall and smash her bumper. He loved it.Saw his very first car crash. He would'nt stop talking about it all day.Women drivers do have that entertainment factor i suppose.

For the sake of balance - the first car crash I ever saw, I was in the car, age 17 with one of my mates driving :joker:. Classic "young guy" crash like I said too - over-confident on a country road, going too fast, understeered on a corner that was sharper than he thought and put us into a field. Wrote off his mum's car and gave me whiplash, the bastard...

I know, I'm not one for generalising at all really, my moms husband has to be one of thee worst drivers I ever came across but my husband is probably one of the best, so there you go my best and worst drivers awards go to men :fan:

Ammi 10-03-2016 02:04 PM

..the worst driver awards tend to go to men a bit more often though, hence why females aren't allowed to pay less car insurance based on gender alone but they still often pay a lower insurance..( so based on them being better drivers I'm presuming..)..:fan:...
