You witness someone stealing, what would you do?

Do you tell the staff or be oblivious to the whole thing?

It happened today when someone stole two baguettes from Greggs. It's next to my work and I'm a regular so I told them behind the counter quietly to check the CCTV.

After telling them I feel extremely conflicted with my decision. Would you have said something?

You leaving work?

Headie 30-03-2016 11:48 AM

But yeah you did the right thing, I probably would've done the same

Jordan. 30-03-2016 11:49 AM

I've stopped shoplifters at work before, and reported it to management. Last week one of my co-workers had a needle pulled on them though so it's not always best to confront them :worry:

If it was just 2 baguettes then I'd probably just leave it, not like the whole Greggs enterprise will crash following the event.

Although I'd really want to tell them as it's completely wrong but IDK in todays world, risky.

Niamh. 30-03-2016 11:53 AM

Probably wouldn't say anything tbh unless I knew the shop owners/staff

Babayaro. 30-03-2016 11:54 AM

No im too much of a pussy

Cherie 30-03-2016 11:55 AM

If the person looked like they could do with the two baguettes I probably wouldn't bother, if it it were a load of school kids I probably would, depends on the circumstances

Black Dagger 30-03-2016 11:56 AM

I'd say 'OI FOOKIN PUT THAT BACK LUV' (unless they were armed)

RichardG 30-03-2016 12:01 PM

Probably nothing I don't want to get stabbed over a baguette

LukeB 30-03-2016 12:04 PM

No because it's only a sandwhich no big deal nothing serious but if it was money/charity money then I would tell.

user104658 30-03-2016 02:03 PM

If it was from a small business owner, yes. If it was from a big company, then nah wouldn't bother.

If it was a small child I'd let their parents know, best to nip these things in the bud as usually the little kids don't even know what their doing. When my eldest was 2, we came home from a trip to the supermarket and found a load of packs of biscuits stashed under the buggy :joker:. Just kept them tbh...

Jessica. 30-03-2016 02:11 PM

If they looked like they needed it I wouldn't say anything, really depends on the specific situation.

armand.kay 30-03-2016 02:18 PM

I wouldn't say anything not my problem tbh.

Daniel. 30-03-2016 02:21 PM

At work, I would stop and/or tell but somewhere else nothing because I'm not a snitch and it's not my problem

Lostie! 30-03-2016 02:21 PM

As much as I'd love to say I'd do something, realistically I'd stay out of it. :worry:

Crimson Dynamo 30-03-2016 02:27 PM

The profits of multinationals are not my concern but if it was a local shop, that perp is going down

Natalie. 30-03-2016 02:47 PM

Probably wouldn't say anything, depends on who it was and what they stole/stole from

andybigbro 30-03-2016 02:49 PM

I probably wouldn't say anything unless it was really valuable.

I would definitely say something if I saw a pickpocket on the street though.

jennyjuniper 30-03-2016 03:32 PM

It really would depend on what they stole. Many years ago I worked in a shop and an old man (obviously not well off, frayed clothes etc) stole a bar of soap. I saw him do it, but I couldn't bring myself to say anything.
If i saw someone stealing clothes etcm, then I would say something, because even people with little money can buy cheap clothes from charity shops.

yeah probably this

Amy Jade 30-03-2016 06:20 PM

I stop people in work all the time, and I appreciate other customers telling us. Everything that gets stolen goes out of the store budget and if the budget is in surplus at the end of the year the staff get the money so the person is effectively stealing from the workers

This is why I don't why people say they don't care if it's from a large retail chain. It still affects the frontline staff not the people at the top.

Firewire 30-03-2016 06:45 PM

Interesting comments. I think the OP was initially confusing, I don't work there it's just near to where I work.

The guy did not look like he needed "fed", he just seemed average and middle-aged. I think he was pissed off at the queue so just decided to steal instead.

Plus there's CCTV at the door. If there hadn't been CCTV I wouldn't have said anything as I wouldn't have wanted me to be a witness in any petty crime.

I am still conflicted over it, but I think reflecting on it it depends on who it is and what they steal. Not sure I would do the same thing again.

He clearly wasn't a homeless person who was starving. He was just an idiot who couldn't be bothered to wait in a queue. He stood in the queue for at least 5 minutes before deciding "**** it". Okay it may have been a hasty decision but I wouldn't have said anything if they were clearly homeless and starving. Please don't criticise me when I've came on here for other people's experiences.

And if said thief was later to break into your house and steal your belonging because they're desperate you would have the same empathy? http://cdn.thisisbigbrother.com/cust...ar5970_177.gif

yes because thieves start small, better to stop them sooner than later
