Hillsborough inquest concludes fans were 'unlawfully killed'

Couldn't find a recent thread about the inquest/the disaster in general so:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-36138337

Quote:

Ninety-six football fans who died as a result of a crush in the 1989 Hillsborough disaster were unlawfully killed, the inquests have concluded.

The jury decided the match commander Ch Supt David Duckenfield's actions amounted to "gross negligence" due to a breach of his duty of care to fans.

Police errors also added to a dangerous situation at the FA Cup semi-final.

The behaviour of Liverpool fans did not contribute to the danger unfolding at the turnstiles.

Live reporting from the Hillsborough Inquests

When the conclusion of the unlawful killing was revealed, families were seen hugging each other in the public gallery and some punched the air.

The jury also concluded
- Police errors caused a dangerous situation at the turnstiles
- Failures by commanding officers caused a crush on the terraces
- There were mistakes in the police control box over the order to open the Leppings Lane end exit gates
- Defects at the stadium contributed the disaster
- There was an error in the safety certification of the Hillsborough stadium
- Police delayed declaring a major incident
- The emergency response including the ambulance service was also delayed

Public gallery applauded the jury as they left court, with some standing up to clap them out.

The families clap as the jury leave the Hillsborough inquests in Warrington. One woman shouts: "God bless the jury."

There are lots of tears as lawyers are hugging the families and the shadow home secretary Andy Burnham is hugging the families in court.

There are lawyers crying, Andy Burnham is crying and the families are hugging. People are saying they can't take in the enormity of it all.

Trevor Hicks, whose daughters Sarah and Vicky died, tells me: "We've done it."

A spontaneous chorus of "You'll Never Walk Alone" is being sung outside the courtroom as people raise Liverpool flags above their heads.

Leading campaigners Margaret Aspinall and Trevor Hicks were seen hugging each other in tears.

A statement on behalf of the families said the jury's conclusions "completely vindicate" the long fight for justice.

It added it has brought "significant progress on the journey... and sense of closure to the bereaved."

Pleased that justice has been seen to be done finally, now to concentrate on the governmental and media cover up.

Cherie 26-04-2016 11:22 AM

27 years to reach this conclusion, but at least it's the right one

Tom4784 26-04-2016 12:53 PM

Glad that the victims and their families have finally been vindicated and now have closure.

DemolitionRed 26-04-2016 01:05 PM

This is a fantastic victory but Hilsborough will always remain a horrific incident in our collective history.

Nothing has changed within South Yorkshire Police 27 years on. The Rotherham scandal is testament to that.

Is there a statute of limitations in the UK? What happens next?

That's a good question, you would assume a new statute of limitation should start from now though since it's only now been ruled to have been the fault of the Police/Stadium. The original verdict was accidental so they couldn't have sued, could they?

Sun journalists being asked to leave the press conference :clap2:

It should be a rule that's in effect at all press conferences tbh.

T* 26-04-2016 03:22 PM

Ridiculous that it's taken this amount of time though

Doubtful, I imagine the headline will read something like 'Justice' or something simple and they'll conveniently forget the role they played in the disaster as they pretend to support the victims.

Denver 26-04-2016 04:15 PM

As a Liverpool fan this is a great victory and a well deserved one for the families who went through 27 years of hell

Glad the families can now begin to move on from their lives...too late for many family members who have passed away during this fight for the truth but at least the remaining survivors and families have finally got the verdict they have campaigned tirelessly for.

Jamie89 26-04-2016 05:28 PM

27 years for this to happen is disgraceful, but I'm relieved for the families of the victims and everyone else effected.

Too right :clap1: but the ****ing cheek of them turning up to the press conference in the first place!

Braden 26-04-2016 05:41 PM

So sad thinking of the misery and ridicule the fans and family members of the deceased have had to face for so many years. At least there is justice at long last.

Braden 26-04-2016 05:44 PM

Sad yet lovely.

BBfanUSA 26-04-2016 08:11 PM

They're reairing a documentary on the topic over here on ESPN2 tonight at 5 PM. It's pretty good, hopefully with the investigation over they'll air it on UK TV.

joeysteele 26-04-2016 08:42 PM

A long and very hard but determined road to eventual justice.
credit too to Andy Burnham who made a lot of getting full and new judgements on this tragedy.

Now however lets have the despicable SUN hauled over the coals and Kelvin Mckenzie for its shocking heap of lies labelled 'the truth' all over its front page and blaming Liverpool fans for this tragedy.

I am so glad the families of all who lost their lives that day at last have some closure that is just and right.

AnnieK 26-04-2016 08:47 PM

Why has my post been deleted?

Shaun 26-04-2016 08:48 PM

Think the whole off-topic bit was deleted Annie (and the first part of yours referenced it IIRC)

totally agree....respect and love all those fans and their families, many fans saved lives that horrific day and were later blamed by the sun and corrupt cops. 27 years to get to the truth or some of the truth.....to all those scousers out there walk on walk on stand tall with hope in your hearts, you did your city proud and fought so long and so bravely for the memories of your lost friends and relatives too and finally the truth is exposed and some justice has been done

The Times has the verdict on the front page of its second edition.

A petition has begun to remove Kevin McKenzie from the Sun, he remains as a columnist

Files on 23 people and organisations involved in the 1989 Hillsborough disaster have been passed to the Crown Prosecution Service.
An inquests jury concluded last April that the 96 victims of the FA Cup semi-final tragedy were unlawfully killed.
The jury found the match commander, Ch Supt David Duckenfield, responsible for manslaughter by gross negligence.
Prosecutors will now decide whether to bring criminal charges against the unnamed 23.

Is thatcher one?... dig her up put her on the stand!!
