Ryan's 'blackface' halloween costume
|
Oh Dear, I have a feeling Ryan is going to be one of the most hated HMs ever. He is so bloody annoying on top of it. I hate people who just talk over everyone constantly, it's a pet peeve of mine
|
I don't like Ryan, but I think there's not anything "racist" really in that. This comment on Daily Mail rings true...
I'll be honest, I don't get it! Yesterday, I saw a video on facebook of 2 African Americans who had dressed up as the Wayan Brothers in White Chicks. They had painted themselves white, yet everyone found it hilarious and didn't make a single comment about it being racist. I just don't understand!!! |
Plus he was dressed up as "Looky Looky man", as he is carrying sunglasses. These guys come up to you in Magaluf, Ibiza and Kavos and try and sell you big yellow sunglasses.
|
Ryan already has my vote for worst housemate of the series... however...
Eddie Murphy made up to look like a white man. And not just a white man, a Jewish white man: Spoiler: Am I insulted? No, not at all. |
Yeah I don't see how it's racist?
White chicks is the same thing really? :conf2: Don't get me wrong I don't like him. |
I've never really minded the whole concept of "dressing up as someone" so long as the intention were clear. For example, 'blacking up' to go as, say, Stevie Wonder for a fancy dress party is a lot less worrying / offensive than randomly doing it - and I can't say I get the reference Ryan is going for in his picture. Unless someone can explain the inspiration for it it does come across as little more than shock tactics or ignorance.
|
I don't like Ryan, but I don't really care about blackface. If anything, SJWs whinging about it makes it worthwhile :E

Reverse that, not only would the film not be popular, the producers and the cast would be lynched. |

Do you know where "blackface" originated from and how it was used in the past, hence why it's offensive? I'd love some evidence of "whiteface" being used to oppress an entire race back in the day. |

For example if one of my friends dressed up as me and but some brown paint on their body I'd be offended - it's like people only see you for a colour or a mock image and nothing else. As for the whiteface, I can't say I do as I'm not white so I've never really thought about it, and don't really get offended on other peoples behalf. I guess you could say the same for the Jewish one, although I have no idea what that's about as I haven't heard of that until now. |

not offensive at all, his intention was not to belittle
and yes, i am minding my privilege |
Without turning this into a massive debate, I do feel like some white people (this isn't directed at anyone on here) are so intent on trying to find something they can deem as 'racist against whites', almost as a way to counter the constant media coverage and discussion of racism against black, jews, asians, hispanics etc.
Why can't we all just get along? The world would be such a nicer place  |

I think he's too thick to have any realisation WHY people might find that offensive.

Meah with show like come fly with me and little Britain does the uk actually care that much about black face? Is it even a big deal here?
Saying that though that costume is a tad bit messy. |
What is he even dressed as because that costume does serve 1920's American theatre...

He's dressed as a beach seller, bit odd for Halloween but given he has only one brain cell :hee: |

I don't think it's racist at all, considering his story why :joker:
Maybe a bit ill informed of the potential backlash tho! |

It doesn't seem to be the same as 'blackface' (the kind that used to be done in a derogatory way) to me, but I can see why people would be upset about it, because it reminds them of that. Still though, I don't think something should be deemed offensive just because it reminds people of something that is offensive. I think intent is very important, and reading the article it does seem like his intent was innocent. (He also doesn't seem to be the brightest person lol, not that ignorance is an excuse when racism does happen, but I can believe that he genuinely wouldn't have thought about the history of blackface and just thought of it as dressing up as someone he'd met, like he says, as a response to them dressing up as him).
|
He could have just worn the outfit without blacking up and the in joke would have made sense, I doubt the guy who wore his clothes on holiday 'white'd up' for it.
He's an actual hateful moron. |
Of course it's not bloody racist ...any more than a bloke in a frock is sexist...sum people are obsessed with racism accusations, they get off in it ...the guy is many things, monumental tool being one if em, but he's not racist

I don't find it funny at all but I don't think it's racist either.
Still think he's a massive idiot though. |
Racism is such a serious accusation to make about someone... and the more people misuse it the more it diminishes it
|
What's the difference between slapping on fake tan?
None. |
