Why do South Asian women always seem to be outsiders on Big Brother?

This is a genuine question and please don't start the whole "oh stop banging in about colour" stuff etc, it's a genuine question because we've seen it quite a few times on the show now and I don't understand why it seems to happen? I'm not saying race is a factor but I just find it interesting that there is a pattern of South Asian women being outsiders from the group.

We had:
Sunita in BB3, the first person to walk due to not feeling part of the group.
Shabnam in BB8 who seemed really desperate to try and get in everyone's good books but the majority of her housemates were easily annoyed by her
Nicky in BB8 who only really had a few friends in Charley, Tracey, Laura etc and was in most of the arguments that series
Maysoon in BB9 walked due to not feeling part of the experience
Beinazir in BB10 was pretty much ignored by both her housemates and production and the viewers, and didn't make any connections with anyone at all
Hira in BB10 seemed to get on well with most of her housemates but still people found issue with her for being too positive and happy (such a stupid reason)
Deana in BB13 is probably the best example of this in civillian BB terms. Only really had 2 or 3 people who actually acknowledged her.
Shilpa in CBB5 is clearly the most obvious case of being excluded from the group and being outcasted and bullied 100%

And now Saira in CBB18 seems to be disliked by nearly all her housemates

I just don't get it, and I can't really put it down to BB casting stereotypes either because the ones I've listed are all very different characters.

Sara is just a bitch lol.

armand.kay 31-07-2016 09:12 PM

nowt to do with race

reece(: 31-07-2016 09:13 PM

She seems very sharp in her tone but I don't think it warrants her being outcasted by all the younger people in the house on Day 3. It's not even been a week and they're judging her already

lewis111 31-07-2016 09:14 PM

It's not just women

Shabaz as well and kinda Pav he was never accepted by his HMs the way Zoe was (idk if they are southern Asian I'm just bringing it up)

Pete. 31-07-2016 09:14 PM

It's obvious racism :) Maybe not overtly but subconsciously by the white colonists like Bear.

thisisdanny 31-07-2016 09:14 PM

Shilpa lying about what she ordered on the shopping list caused a devastating chain of events for herself

thisisdanny 31-07-2016 09:15 PM

Saira encouraging Heavy to exercise has caused a similar situation OOPS

She may have 'lied' in the argument but the bullying towards her started days before that. Most the racial comments made towards her happened before the oxo cube argument actually.

She was judging, and vocally, minutes into the show  Why is it unacceptable for her to have the same done to her?

As for the list in the OP, Beinazir had a HARSH deal and I have always said that, I don't remember her being outcasted by the housemates though?

Hira, IIRC was very liked inside the house. It was a stupid move to try and save the horrific Lisa that lead to hiras eviction :fist:

Sunita I don't remember very much

Didn't watch BB8

Maysoon probably didn't feel part of the experience as she did **** all. Beautiful woman but boring as hell and most people have her in their top 5 most boring...which probably has something to do with her not feeling 'part of the experience' :p

Gave up on bb13 pretty early on

Shilpas treatment was ****ing disgusting and remains one of the few real cases of bullying we have seen on BB.

Ashley. 31-07-2016 09:18 PM

Shabnam was annoying in general; I enjoyed Nicky but she initiated most arguments; Maysoon and Beinazir were both quiet and chose not to speak out (nothing to do with them being excluded).

I don't think it's an issue of race, it's just coincidental. Shilpa is the only housemate whom we can safely say was isolated because of their race.

thisisdanny 31-07-2016 09:18 PM

I think without racial comments being made it would be wrong to assume it's racism :conf:

Yes it does she was so rude to poor innocent baking queen Nadia. Not saying this is god giving her what she deserves but it is.

I think Conor's hatred towards Deana was definitely racially motivated. He was just smart enough to hide it and not say anything racist/racially offensive like Jade and co did in CBB5.

Don't even go there. English isn't her first language so how was she meant to understand some cockney bird screaming 'did you order', it's naturally that she got confused with 'did you own' or whatever. Plus she didn't ask for Jade to scream at her and reinstigate the argument when Shilpa came back from the bedroom 'that was really stupid thing to say etc'. Plus she tried to call for help but she got laughed at by Jo and Danielle.

And in truth you do only need one oxo cube for rice anyway, no wonder Danielle felt ill and fat

The racist limericks for example, that only came out afterwards due to the Ofcom investigation.

It was racially motivated by his family, so wouldn't be shocked if it was from him too

Yep :clap1: Calling her Poppadom & ****awala is clear racism too I fail to see how it isn't?

I agree with most of this :clap1:

The point of the thread isn't "everyone is racist to Asian girls!!!", it's like you said, more of pointing out that coincidentally all the South Asian girls on the show have had a hard time with their experience and there isn't really an explanation why

armand.kay 31-07-2016 09:21 PM

saying Saira is being bullied is an insult to chicks like shilpa and nadia.

I swear some housemates (it might not have been Conor) made fun of Deana's Indian culture but they just didn't air it

Yeah I feel this way too but obviously it can't be confirmed since he never said anything on the show.

Although iirc there were a few questionable comments that could've been deemed racial from some of the Insiders that series.

I agree with this actually. The need for someone to be bullied each year is just ridiculous. Disagreements/arguments are not bullying....even if it involves your fave or someone you dislike.

Yeah I don't think there'll ever be an explanation for it. It could sometimes be a case of people excluding themselves because of their race rather than being excluded (just a theory, I've seen a lot of this in real life), but obviously it boils down to how the housemate identifies themselves.

- Danielle calling Shilpa a dog.
- Jo and Danielle saying Indians are thin because they're always sick from undercooking their food and the comments in regards to eating with hands.
- Jack allegedly calling Shilpa a 'p (rhymes with tacky) cunt'.
- Accent mimicking

All took place before the big argument between Jade. It was the 'Shilpa Poppadom' thing that came after the argument iirc and the unaired limerick.

I was thinking Sree from BB10 as well who also got accused of being bullied. It's not an exuse but a lot of these people mentioned just happen to be a bit annoying and yes there a plenty of white british housemates who were also just like that but I think the reason why south asians are often outcasted could possibly be due to backgrounds (this is very stereotypical).

White british families tend to be a lot less reserved than south asian families, it's a fact. Asian families are usually very religious and in countries like India and Pakistan the children are expected to highly respect their parents and be very obediant. Of course this is not always the case but statistically there's more likely to be an argument or something in a white british family than an asian family, especially working class white families.

This is probably why working class white (or black) housemates are usually the loudest because asian housemates perhaps have a more reserved way of sticking up for themselves which could be considered patronising because they might not be screaming & swearing in somebody's face.

So I'm not really suprised that south asian housemates tend to be outcasts but it's definately not a deliberate race thing just a clash in upbringings imo.

Yeah Ashleigh and Scott were mocking Indian's eating with their hands when Deana apparently did it. It was aired and they both got warned for it.

Pete. 31-07-2016 09:27 PM

Don't think Sree was bullied (maybe a little by Marcus). Iirc his immediate response to people was 'shut up' which isn't the best thing

karezza 31-07-2016 09:27 PM

They make themselves outsiders.

Shilpa and Deana both were definitely racially-instigated, for sure.

As for Saira, I love the good sis and she is a good girl, but I think she's generally not coming across the right way. She had good intentions, but she's just doing everything wrong in terms of how she's executing those intentions.

Sree was more 'bullied' than Saira isn't being bullied.

armand.kay 31-07-2016 09:28 PM

wow Sree was just a sweet angel who was attacked for wanting to wife noreen.

Macie Lightfoot 31-07-2016 09:30 PM

bc people mistake them for being black.........x

Pete. 31-07-2016 09:31 PM

Sree annoyed even me watching. Him trying to poison Lisa is a top 10 moment though

Heaven = Winner 31-07-2016 09:32 PM

Sree was...awkward. I don't know if that was a race thing, or because people genuinely found him uncomfortable to be with (then again, most of those people were dicks anyway)

jaxie 31-07-2016 09:32 PM

I think Saira has made herself an outsider. There is no bullying going on at this stage and no racism. It's all self inflicted.
