Bad News!
this evening I was just off to bed, picked up the empty glass from the floor and as a joke my housemate slammed the door on me. Unfortunately it was a hard impact on my hand which resulted in the glass shattering straight through my wrist  The impact was so intense, blood started pouring out my wrist and went al over the walls and house!
We rushed to A+E where they cleaned it up and had a look. There were 2 deep cuts on the wrist, one was 0,5cm from my artery. They told me that i could not have been any luckier... if that artery had been slashed, I could have lost my hand unless got rushed in for immediate surgery. An xray identified a small bit of glass lodged under some tissue, so they were able to remove that. They were just about to start stitching it up (Ill need about 10) when I told them I wasn't happy with how my thumb was feeling. They did some responsiveness tests and went and got a guy who specializes in that sort of area, and they came to the conclusion that my superficial nerve (thats its name) has been severely damaged when the glass cut me. They then decided to not stitch me up. They have arranged for a nerve surgeon to travel down from Birmingham tomorrow to take a look, as nerve surgery is a complex procedure. Hopefully the nerve isnt damaged too bad, but it;s going to need some tests and poking around to find out. it was my right wrist too... so doing stuff like typing takes forever 1 handed :cloud: the plan now is to keep taking pain killers (im in a fair bit of pain) and see what the surgeon decides! wish me luck! - Mark |
 That's an awful accident to have happened, I hope the surgeon has some better news for you.
Best of luck to you, Mark. |

So sorry to hear of your accident Mark. Things like that happen all too easily. For a full recovery her is a word of advice....( some old tarts think they know everything).....
SOme years ago Mr. Duchess had a similar accident...well the result was Similar. he was walking into a restaurant and put his hand on the revolving glass door. SOmone came the other way, not looking where they were going and in a rush. The result was Mr. Duchess's hand going striaght through the glass an causing injuries much like yours. Neuro surgery was needed and he was stitched to the hilt! ( he did make a full recovery eventually ) When talking to the surgeon before surgery he told rather a large white lie. He said he was a musician and played the violin. He's no and doesn't. COnsequently even more care was taken that he getback full use of his hand and wrist. He spent the next weeks doing physio, the most important part being done constantly at home. He had sponge balls...no laughing thank you. The sort children play with. They were of differnt solidity. The first he used were quite pliable. When he was sitting watching TV or playing music or just chatting, he always had a ball in his hand. To start with he sqeezed them in the palm of his hand. Then he manilulated them with 1 finger and the thumb making the ball travel from index finger along each one in turn to the little finger and back again. He gragulally built up the strength in his hand by increasing the solidity of the ball. Once h e was FULLY recovered he reconned he actually WOULD be able to play the violin...and rather well as his manuel dexterity was better than it had been before the accident. SO ...dear boy..and this is NOT joke and NO laughing matter...if you want to get FULL recovery and use of your wrist and hand...keep sqeezing the balls.!!! HONEST ...this is NOT a joke!:spin2: |
I let them know of the situation on the Malachi Cush forum.
Any updates of how surgery went? |
Hiya
Thanks for all your wishes and messages, much appreciated. Finally just got out of hospital after the most boring 2 days ever sitting by myself in a room with no tv/music/interaction! The surgery was a success and the surgeon has corrected my nerves under the thumb back to normal. My hand will still be numb (they gave me a general anesthetic, and a local one for my hand) until this evening... so I won't know until then if I will have full sensation back. When I woke up\ after the surgery I had 'post anesthesia shaking' which was a little scary as I was only half awake and was wondering wth was going on! I have to go back in 2 weeks to get the stitches out... they used 16. One of the worst things was only being allowed to eat and drink between 12am and 4am for the last 2 days! I've been starving/thirsty the whole time... and on that note, I'm off to cook the biggest meal ever! Thanks once again! - Mark |
Quick recovery Mark, nice one! Glad to hear you're all better.
 |
