Were you insulted by Renees use of the word 'cancer'
The word alone cuts through me like a knife to the throat.. But her context was justified
She wasnt saying "hahaha cancer is funny" like some users misheard... She compared cancer to the worst person she has ever met. There isnt disrespect here imo, she said at the beginning of the show that she despises bear, it is probable she feels the same way about cancer. |
Not at all. I did find it a little two faced though how she was repeating to Aubrey that she did infact mean it how he took it, and then said a few worse cancer related things...however when making up she was all like..'you said I said you were cancer, I never said that'
Thats not the same as being offended though  |
I wasn't offended, but it was a horrible thing to say. Then she tried to justify it to Bear. He could have kicked up a fuss over it, but he let it go.
|
It is utterly ridiculous to be offended by the use of cancer as a metaphor. And in Bear's case it was utterly justified.
|
Not at all, it is a well known saying.
|
It didn't particularly offend me, but then everyone's different and if you had experience of cancer you might feel differently
|
Imagine being offended by something so trivial

No.
It is a well known metaphor. This coming from someone with one sister that has had cancer twice, another sister with terminal cancer, a sister-in-law with terminal cancer and numerous family members died from it. |

Mitch in BBCAN referenced Jared, Rail and Kelsey to be cancerous, that wasnt offensive?

I think it was clear that she chose her words carefully and it was heartfelt, so completely justifiable.

..not personally offended, no...like many, many people, I've lost people I loved to cancer and also have people in my life who have survived cancer...it's one of those things though/in the way the word was used that would easily cause offence because of the associations and personal pain...
..it really does show the level of 'hate' in the house..(also in Renee saying that she actually wished physical harm on Bear..)..I mean wow...but it's all though been provoked/instigated/stirred up, mixed around and evoked by Bear..this is the house he wanted, this is the house that he's striven for, this is the house that he's given us...he's been relentless in that and now it's all like a monster to his Frankenstein...it was really never going to end any other way ..he's pushed/prodded and poked for the worst in people and that's exactly what he's got..and this is entertainment..?...this is to further his career or whatever..?..no, this is hate, for which he's greatly responsible and it really isn't pleasant at all...grim Bear/grim Renee...just grim, grim, grim ... |
..I mean, you just can't purposefully (whether it be part of a personal game-plan or not..)..bring out the very worst in people and then stand back with a lack of responsibility and ownership in what you've created or any surprise/shock at the level of that 'worst'...

Beautifully put  |
I thought it warranted a talking to at least, more as to what she said to Aubrey as to it.
Not offended myself, more disappointed by her and that she lowered how I see her now. |
Different people are offended by different things depending on their life experiences I don't know what the purpose of this thread is in all honesty, we are not all the same I think most people know that
|
nah
|
It's a bit of a strong word for me to call someone a cancer, but it's not as offensive to me as the actions that have happened in this series.
|
No. Sometimes PC is just an acornym for personal computer.

Not at all

It's not a metaphor I would personally use. Brits are more likely to say someone is poison or poisonous. If she had wished it upon him, I would certainly be shocked. She made a brasher comparison than Brits care to use. It's a commonly used metaphor in Holland. The difference is that the word 'poisonous' has lost it's impact as it's not as prevalent a cause of death as it was centuries ago. Cancer is. She was using a more contemporary metaphor to show how he affects her. She did not wish it upon him. Before anyone asks, yes I have lost 4 family members to cancer. Tommorow I'm holding an all day Summer Lights cake and crafts day for MacMillan Cancer Care. Hopefully raise plenty of pounds anyway.

Your Summer Lights day sounds lovely. I hope it goes well and that you raise lots of money. :) |
Thankyou. I'm no Mary Berry but I'll give it a go!

No problem with her saying it, I lost some respect for her when she denied it ...." I Say it How It Is " is suppose to be her default setting according to Renee.
It showed dishonesty and weakness and I was disappointed with her. |
I can see your point. She did deny it. But she can't keep up the dishonesty. He had her and she knew it, so she started to laugh. Waiting for this to be pounced on as a sign she was laughing at her use of the metaphor. I saw it as 'ok,you got me, I can't deny it'. She did the same over spitgate in the bedroom when he knew she knew and she eventually admitted it. She's self aware herself that she 'says mean things' in the heat of a moment. As you said, and I do take your point, she initially flat denied it. But if she continued with a strong denial and never dissolved into laughter, the viewers are more than aware of the continued dishonesty. She said what she did in a meltdown. To sit outside in a quiet reflective moment with him and bring it back to that moment of 'telling it like it is' would also be slaughtered on here for being hardfaced, unforgiving, sucking the fun out of the show etc etc. Just my thoughts but I do take your point that initial denial was not a good look.

Secondary meaning of cancer

If she was joking then it was in poor taste. However if she actually meant it(which i think she probably did after her saying she wants him whacked by her mobster mates) then she is disgusting.
|
It was a statement that he was nasty, i have heard it before 'you are the Cancer of Society' etc. I don't believe she meant that she wished he had Cancer but that he was the nasty part that needs to go.
I wasn't insulted by it but can understand if some are. |
Honestly if you're offended by something like that, you're not fit to live in this world.
|
Not in the slightest, I agreed with her wholeheartedly.
