Friday Morning Dilemma
 

You are a doctor at a top hospital. You have six gravely ill patients, five of whom are in urgent need of organ transplants. You can’t help them, though, because there are no available organs that can be used to save their lives. The sixth patient, however, will die without a particular medicine. If s/he dies, you will be able to save the other five patients by using the organs of patient 6, who is an organ donor. What do you do?

Sacrifice the one patient to save the lives of the other 5. A terrible, terrible choice to have to make though.

I would treat the 6th patient. I think that contradicts what I said in one of the other dilemmas where I think I said I'd let someone die to save more people, but I think if I was a doctor I would feel like I have to treat people where I can. Also, imagine if you let the 6th person die in order to use their organs and then someone else died whose organs could also be used, this person will have died needlessly at your hands. So with this scenario there is still hope for the other 5 even if you treat the 6th person.

Yeah i would treat the 6th patient also, I think it would be completely unethical for a Doctor to do anything else. It's basically stealing a persons body parts when they could have been saved. I think it's like one of the other dilemmas about the 2 husbands who hate their wives, one poisons the wife and the other doesn't help the wife when she poisons herself, this is the same thing imo, the Doctor may as well have murdered that 6th patient by refusing to help them

if the 6th patient has a functioning version of the organs required, then rotate his organs with each patient, rotating back and forward until the organs become available for permanent transplant.

The doctor has to treat patient 6 as he/she swore an oath to do so.

Yeah this one is easy. Save the 6th.

Go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for all of this to blow over.

No dilemma here, of course you would treat patient number 6 and carry on hoping for organs for the rest through natural deaths of others.

what if number 6 was a relative of yours and you found out that they could have been saved but the Doctor decided not to help them because he wanted to take their organs

As A doctor...I would have taken the oath to do no harm...and I would be harming the sixth patient to save the first 5...leaving me vulnerable to a law suit where I will lose my license to practice medicine...making me unable to pay off my student loans for the 8+ years of education it took to become a doctor... left living on the streets where I will catch an illness perfectly curable by a medication...but I won't have health care so I will die in a karma like similar situation to patient six...

Mokka , Nelly had such a terrible time at the vets today :worry: she has a huge sponge sewn in her ear :bawling: for 10 days, she is so unhappy and it was v v stressful.

I would save the 6th patient but brainwash them into killing hookers and pimps once they get out of hospital. I would then use the organs of the hookers and pimps murdered by patient No6 to save the other five people.:hee:

Always the practical one am i. During my vacation in TIBB Towers recently i was ever so helpful removing the corns from the mods feet with a cheese grater and i lanced their boils too with a blunt rusty knife. :thumbs:
