Post Office workers to strike in week before Christmas

Quote:

Post Office workers are to stage five days of strikes in the week leading up to Christmas.

The industrial action next week comes amid a dispute with management over job losses, the closure of a final salary pension scheme and branches being shut.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) said the walkout will include Christmas Eve.

CWU assistant secretary Andy Furey said: "All of the blame for this unfortunate turn of events is 100% down to the intransigence of the company."

He claimed the Post Office had "launched an unprecedented attack on the jobs, job security, and pensions of
thousands of hard-working and loyal Post Office workers".

Mr Furey added: "The CWU can be a constructive partner to work with, but sadly, the people currently running the company have, so far, chosen the path of conflict and industrial disputes."

Disgraceful decision...and will win no sympathy from the public.

Amy Jade 12-12-2016 06:08 PM

I do think the employees deserve better but that's just hurting the public

Northern Monkey 12-12-2016 06:18 PM

That'll get em public support.....Ruin everyone's Christmas:clap1:

Worse Time To Go on Strike

T* 12-12-2016 06:41 PM

strike during the summer and i'll sympathise but try and **** with people trying to have a good christmas and you can **** right off you cheeky bastards

T* 12-12-2016 06:45 PM

this is apparently because the 'post office is in danger' so make people go to competitors, well good idea guys

joeysteele 12-12-2016 08:51 PM

It will likely have little effect.

This I understand is affecting the main Crown Post offices, crazy to take this action at this time of year really.

While I can sympathise with their cause,I think this could turn out a pointless exercise.
Sadly for them and the main Post offices.

arista 13-12-2016 02:36 AM

"It will likely have little effect."

Yes Joey
the AmazonUK white vans (sub, sub contract)
gets many amazon orders to most homes
and many drop off at Amazon lockers
and drop of points, small newspaper shops
which keeps them cooking.

Typical

Northern Monkey 13-12-2016 10:42 AM

I like to do most of my Crimbo shopping the old fashioned way and go into town.Nowt beats queuing up in Argos for an hour with a load of impatient angry bastards:laugh:
Be a bugger for Funky Pigeon though getting all the cards out late.

Livia 13-12-2016 10:43 AM

More people will send Christmas greeting by email, text, phone... The cost of postage has rocketed in the past few years because fewer people are sending letters. Way to encourage customers to use your service - let them down when they need you most.

user104658 13-12-2016 10:54 AM

Oh awesome. We bank at the post office, which means we can't bank, which puts us at higher risk of robbery. I mean not my shop specifically, we're very low-risk because of the location (right next to busy bus stop) and layout (two sides of the shop are entirely glass so it's totally open view)... but this will affect every shop that banks with the post office and there are plenty that are out of view down dodgy streets.

user104658 13-12-2016 10:55 AM

In terms of actual postage though, I buy pretty much everything on Amazon anyway and it's all delivered by a bloke in his car who lives a couple of streets over :joker:.

Me too. I've done all my Christmas shopping in Amazon except a few bits I like to buy in local shops. And the woman from the next farm delivers it in her Volvo estate full of dogs.

I bought a good shot of mine from there too

Livia 13-12-2016 10:59 AM

So much better than joining in the utter madness that is Christmas Shopping in town. And I don't have to Park and Ride for it.

user104658 13-12-2016 11:00 AM

Amazon Prime has been one of the best and worst things that's ever happened.

Best: Order pretty much anything and it shows up in my shed the next day!

Worst: Didn't realise that my primary payment method had switched to my credit card and am about £3000 down :umm2:. Wups.

Yeah so far I haven't set foot inside an actual shop :fan: Will have brave it at some point this weekend though :worry:

Unfortunately Amazon prime is pretty useless for me because the free delivery only applies to the UK

:(. Sometimes you can order at like 9pm and it shows up before 1pm the next afternoon! It's sorcery...

Oh, Niamh logic : Went to buy Robs book from Amazon and the delivery was going to cost more than the actual book....so I bought a watch as well so delivery would be free :worry:

Shaun 13-12-2016 11:10 AM

Only thing I'd moan about re: Amazon Prime is that it takes the full subscription in one chunk rather than spreading it out over the year. Forgot about it last year (have had it for nearly 3 now) and it was quite the unwelcome dent in my wage the week after Christmas 2015.

And yeah this news is going to screw me over a bit. Have got 3 gifts left to post and haven't bought one of them yet

You can just cut out the middle-man though. Loads of couriers you can book through their website, and they'll collect the parcel from your door and deliver to where it needs to be, not Post Office ever involved. Part of why they're struggling, I'd imagine.

Just be wary of MyHermes - it was them who left my wife's brand new iPhone in the recycling bin of a house 4 doors down last year, leaving only a note saying "Blue Bin". :umm2:

Livia 13-12-2016 11:17 AM

Love Amazon Prime. Love their telly... and when my niece sets up my Echo for me, I'll probably love that too.

I like the tracking services with Royal Mail and other couriers that show you the current location of your parcel. I find that fascinating. :hehe:

I await the day that they'll have active GPS in the parcel so that I can literally see it moving...

Usually get that with parcels from the US too. Then they turn up at your door demanding money for the parcel because the sender didn't pay the correct import/export fees :fist:.

It'll be like that from Europe soon enough too of course :hee:. #importfees #brexit #farage #notracking4u

Yes TS
I get that alot to
also from Japan same problem

Black Dagger 13-12-2016 06:57 PM

Just poking myself into the Echo conversation above, they really do look good, but the whole only being allowed to set up in one room seems very inconvenient.

I'd want to listen to the radio in my room, but then take it into the kitchen and ask her to help out with recipes.

I'm pretty sure they do a monthly subscription now. It'll work out dearer over a year, but you can cancel it at any time rather than the full year upfront.

Kizzy 13-12-2016 09:36 PM

Argos drivers now too, oh and don't forget the southern train strike.

"Argos drivers now too,"

they are Fools
as Amazon will Win the battle
beating Sainsbury-Argos Corp.

Some Companies Now have No Unions
I am able to work with them FASTER

Vicky. 15-12-2016 02:31 AM

Sorry. I agree with the doctors/teaching assistant strikes, but these (and british airways staff...and any other random dickheads who want attention) need to **** off. Bandwagon jumpers. Post office staff and flight attendants are piss easy to replace so they shouldn't push their luck too much..

arista 15-12-2016 02:39 AM

"Post office staff and flight attendants are piss easy to replace so they shouldn't push their luck too much.. "

Its simple, Vicky
the Last Crown High Street
Post Offices are going to Close
they will merge into a WH SMITH store
or a Supermarket.

No one can stop this.
Unions are Fools
to think they can stop this.
