Conservative councillor suspended for offensive tweets over Eurovision vote
A Conservative councillor has been suspended for tweeting offensive comments about Irish people during the Eurovision Song Contest.
Nick Harrington, who also sits as a magistrate, was clearly moved to anger after the Irish judges failed to vote for UK entry Lucie Jones. In his ire, he tweeted: "#Eurovision2017 thanks Ireland. You can keep your ********** gypsies! Hard border coming folks!" Unsurprisingly his comments drew angry calls to the police and Warwick District Council - as well as a slew of remarks on his Twitter feed. His Twitter account was deleted after the post, but not before it had been screen grabbed and shared across social media. Warwick District Council leader Andrew Mobbs suspended Mr Warrington for six months pending a full investigation. In a statement the council said: "We apologise unreservedly for the offence and upset that his comments have caused." Police are also investigating the tweet sent from the councillor's account after complaints from members of the public. Website Mobile App |
I noticed quite a few people being confused at the concept of 'impartial' judges (impartial in inverted commas because Cyprus and Greece need to think about what they've done). Obviously an inappropriate thing to tweet, hope he gets suitably punished.

The Eurovision is another European institution I'd like to leave. Shame we can't have a referendum on that. |

The UK has won 5 times, same as Sweden, its time to give other countries a shot at hosting, I don't know why the UK feels so hard done by :idc: |

Ouch, what an idiot.
Hopefully someone sees the error of their ways allowing the likes of him to be a magistrate, sack the beggar.:fist: On a lighter note, we didn't come last:joker: |

Silly man, why should Ireland give the UK votes if they didn't like the song.
The problem with Lucie's song was that like many others, it was a little over performed, with unnecessary near shouting. I like shouting in songs to stress or enhance part of the song, however it is not always best to do little else. In a contest like this with many songs being performed like that much the same way,it often will be the 'different' more sedate performance will get noticed and more appreciated in my opinion. Ireland like the lilting more gently performed songs,Dana romping home ages ago with 'all kinds of everything ' also Johnny Logan and 'What's another year' to name just 2. Clearly the UK entry while being better than maybe other years, didn't strike a chord with Ireland,so no votes, which Ireland are perfectly in their rights to not give if they weren't keen on the song and/or performance. |

I don't think Ireland has a "type" of song, and those two mentioned were from decades ago |
