Would you do clinical trials for money?

I saw an advert on Facebook for a place called FluCamp, so I visited their website and basically, they administer you the common cold virus and you have to stay in bed monitored for 12 days (with no visitors). You get paid up to £3500 for it, but the thing that puts me off is all the blood tests etc that they have to do. I hate needles! Have you or would you ever try something like this?

Lostie! 07-08-2017 02:44 PM

Nope, wouldn't want to take the risk after the horror stories you hear.

LukeB 07-08-2017 02:45 PM

If it's safe then maybe

did you not watch the recent dramatisation of that horrific case?

Littlegreen 07-08-2017 03:24 PM

I saw a horror movie based around those trials. I probably would do it if I was that in need of the money.

Nicky91 07-08-2017 03:29 PM

for money if it was lots of money, millions then yes otherwise no

*Nicky seeing dollar signs*

common cold wouldn't be too bad I suppose that said would you really want to feel rough for 12 days if you didn't have to, and 12 days in bed, sounds great but you would probably be stir crazy after a few days, and yeah there have been horror stories but they have been with drugs administered this looks like flu virus so just the flu jab with active virus instead of inactive one, I might if I needed cash, what can go wrong as long as it is just common cold of course..

arista 07-08-2017 04:19 PM

Yes the Young should do it
Make sure you have the Cash deal sorted first

Marsh. 07-08-2017 04:25 PM

I don't know. 12 days in bed for £3, 500 sounds decent but it's not your own bed, you can't see anyone and it could go wrong. :worry:

Vicky. 07-08-2017 04:34 PM

For that kind of money definitely..do you have the link?

Edit. Found it, and spoke to Gavin just no and he doesn't seem impressed D:

Edit again. 'Thank you for your application.' :D

Withano 07-08-2017 05:02 PM

I reccomend people doing **** like this because recruiting is so ****ing difficult haha.

I'd imagine they're gonna give half the participants a placebo so they can test the effectiveness of some new drug against a baseline probs. 50% chance of easy money, 50% chance of suffering. Worth it!

I might as well.
Forever getting tested and blood taken, mind you a good cold might see me off:joker:

Morgan. 07-08-2017 05:30 PM

Can you use your phone etc because I have TiBB and YouTube to keep me occupied for 12 days! And also just sleep!

Vanessa 07-08-2017 05:48 PM

No, I'm not risking my health for any amount of money.

Marsh. 07-08-2017 06:11 PM

Knowing my luck, I'd come home with MRSA.

reece(: 07-08-2017 06:23 PM

Someone did a coffee trial at my uni and this is what happened

Wow, our children really are getting dumber with every generation. :omgno:

user104658 07-08-2017 09:07 PM

I'd have a cold for 3.5k, why not.

I wouldn't touch anything involving experimental drugs, though :nono:.

bots 07-08-2017 09:19 PM

bear in mind the side effects that all the commonly available drugs have AFTER having gone through clinical trials. Multiply that 100 fold at least and you are getting close to the potential side effects you may experience. Also, how many drugs have been discontinued after 10 or 20 years in the field, and you are accepting the risk of trying something not on the market yet. If your life depended on it, its worth the risk, otherwise ... don't go near it

Well said Ness! Never mind the common cold, common sense is better, it's free and doesn't involve sticking needles anywhere ;)

RichardG 08-08-2017 07:02 AM

probably only if the trial was for a potential cure of some horrible disease that i already had

Josy 08-08-2017 07:08 AM

Not sure why anyone would even think of doing it :/

Vicky. 08-08-2017 10:53 AM

Well 3.5k is a lot of money, the cold isn't that dangerous...flu can be a bit more so but surrounded by medically trained people with numerous blood tests and checkups, I can't see too much going wrong. Plus I am medicated up to the eyeballs in daily life (a reason they might refuse me actually) so I am likely to get side effects from that anyway

Probably won't be able to do it anyway as I am unsure if I could get to London the 3 times thats needed just for medicals to check I am healthy enough to take part

Kizzy dear.

Redway 08-08-2017 11:00 AM

Yup.

Vicky. 08-08-2017 11:07 AM

Also someone has to do stuff like this or we wouldn't have safe drugs tbh.

not all drug trials are equal. Some companies rush products to market, others do due diligence before releasing them for trial. Its a very scary game of russian roulette. You may be lucky and earn a few quick bucks, you may also be very unlucky and have your life ruined. Still think its worth the money?

Yup.

-snip-

Sorry for the pity party  But I am ****ed either way. Might aswell be ****ed and have cash to actually treat my kids. Though fairly sure they will turn me down for existing health issues, looking at the site it looks like the only issue is if you have asthma, which luckily, I don't have. Will ask when they call me, which should be apparently by 5 today.

bots 08-08-2017 11:31 AM

you could get lucky and be in the placebo group, that is money for nothing .... if it was me, i'm never that lucky ... i would grow an extra head or something

Vicky. 08-08-2017 11:37 AM

Yeah the side effects and stuff are pretty scary, but its so tempting D: I don't usually go that much into my problems on the forum either, so not entirely sure why I did that either..as my usual way is to pretend everything is fine.

They probably wouldn't allow you do it Vicky because of your current medical issues and that you're already on meds for that. I think you have to 100% well and on no medication for these trials

Beso 10-08-2017 03:46 PM

I have a mate who has done this a few times over the years..he swears by it....

they gave him tourettes.
