CHANNEL 4: OVERNIGHT VIEWING FIGURES
After Wednesday's 3% increase to 10.4%, C4's daily viewing share yesterday slumped back, to a steady 8%. Between 6pm and 7pm, The Simpsons and Hollyoaks lost 500,000 viewers and 400,000 viewers respectively, after their 2 million hits yesterday in the prime time slot. At 8.30pm, the season finale of Place and The Sun ended with a respectable 2.1 million viewers in the 30 minute programme with Amanda Lamb. Afterwards, at 9pm, the 2-hour documentary, Suddam's Tribe, attracted 1.2 million viewers, and at 11pm, Hitler's Comedy Years delivered only 664,000 viewers for C4. Over at E4, 556,300 individuals tuned for a first look at Hollyoaks, but ratings went downhill afterwards. The US Import, ER, which is now struggling with viewing, got only 230,300, and even repeats of Friends could do better. At 10pm, Sex In Court attracted 14,800 viewers and The Naken Gun 2 performed better with 189,900 viewers. This brought E4's share from 1.8% to just 1.4%. :flower: |

HOLBY CITY SETTLES IN NEW HOME
Holby City just beat The Bill in its first outing in a Thursday night slot. Yesterday evening, an extended edition of BBC1's 10 O'Clock News between 10pm and 10.50pm got 4.8 million viewers and a 25% share. Between 10.30pm and 11pm ITV1's late news bulletin got 1.8 million viewers at 11%; while an extended Newsnight between 10.30pm and midnight on BBC2 got 600,000 viewers at 6%. A RUDDY GOOD NIGHT FOR BBC1
Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse's BBC1 sketch show clawed back some of its lost viewers on Friday night. Ruddy Hell! It's Harry and Paul was watched by 4.3 million viewers at a 19% share between 9.30pm and 10pm, according to unofficial overnights. This was 600,000 viewers and a share point up on the previous Friday. The series debuted with 4.8 million and a 22% share four weeks ago. Enfield and Whitehouse were up against a repeat of Miss Marple story A Murder is Announced on ITV1, which averaged 3.2 million viewers and a 14% share between 8.30pm and 10.30pm. On BBC2, a Timewatch about a mass grave of Roman gladiators got 1.9 million at 8% between 9pm and 9.50pm. BBC1's 9pm offering Have I Got News for You, with Kirsty Young guest presenting, drew 6.3 million viewers and a 27% share between 9pm and 9.30pm. This was an increase of 900,000 viewers and three share points on the previous week. On Channel 4, Ugly Betty at 9pm remained steady at 2 million viewers and a 9% share while Derren Brown - Trick or Treat lost 200,000 viewers on the previous week, down to 1.2 million and a 7% share in the half hour from 10pm. EUROVISION A HIT DESPITE UK FLOP
The Eurovision Song Contest drew nearly 9 million viewers to BBC1 on Saturday night, despite a dismal showing by the UK entry, Scooch. BBC1's coverage of the 52nd annual competition - won by Serbia, with the Scooch in 22nd place - attracted 8.7 million viewers and a 40% share between 8pm and 11.15pm, according to unofficial overnights. This was was up 500,000 viewers and three share points on last year's Eurovision on BBC1. The audience peaked at 10.9 million viewers - up 300,000 on last year - as balladeer Marija Serifovic was crowned the winner at 10.30pm. Audience share peaked at 10.45pm at 53%. Eurovision dragged down the audience for ITV1 shows Who Wants to be a Millionaire? and Parkinson. Who Wants to be a Millionaire? was watched by 3.1 million viewers and attracted a 13% share at 9.25pm, down 200,000 and two share points on last week. Parkinson, scheduled alongside Eurovision's climax, lost 500,000 viewers week on week to record an audience of 2.1 million, a 12% share. This is believed to be the lowest Parkinson ratings since the veteran chatshow host's switch from BBC1 to ITV1. But the success of Eurovision did not hamper ITV talent show Grease is the Word, which gained 400,000 viewers and a share point from last week, probably because it was not up against BBC1's talent show Any Dream Will Do. Grease still lost out heavily to Eurovision, with an audience of 4.3 million and a 20% share between 7.45pm and 9.25pm. Earlier in the evening Any Dream Will Do got the better of Vernon Kay's Gameshow Marathon. The search for a singer to play Joseph in the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical was watched by 5.1 million viewers, a 28% share between 6.45pm and 7.50pm. Kay's reinvention of classic show Mr and Mrs pulled in 4.4 million for ITV1 between 6.40pm and 7.45pm, a 24% share of the audience. BBC2 focused on writer Daphne du Maurier, with a Rick Stein cookery show inspired by her Cornish haunts drawing 1.9 million at 8.10pm, a 9% share. That was followed at 9pm by a 90-minute drama about du Maurier's lesbian relationships, which had an audience of 1.8 million, an 8% share. Over on Channel 4, the Jason Statham film repeat The Transporter was watched by 1.8 million between 9pm and 10.40pm, an 8% share. The Transporter was followed by another repeat, the Tim Robbins movie Arlington Road, which had 700,000 viewers or 6%. Earlier, a documentary about artist Antony Gormley was watched by 500,000 viewers, a share of just 2%, on Channel 4 in the 8pm hour. Channel Five's US drama NCIS was watched by 1.7 million, an 8% share, at 8.05pm; while CSI:NY, which featured a guest turn by singer Nelly Furtado, had an audience of 2.1 million, a 10% share at 9pm. Kingdom's fourth episode, starring Fry as a country solicitor, attracted 5.6 million viewers and a 23% share between 9pm and 10pm, according to unofficial overnight figures. This was 700,000 viewers and two share points up on last Sunday's episode. Kingdom launched with 8.2 million viewers and a 34% share. On BBC1 in the 9pm hour Dalziel and Pascoe shed 200,000 viewers on the previous week, with 5.4 million viewers and a 22% share for the concluding part of a two-part story about the occult. Both shows were tussling with Frost and Pegg's Perfect Night In on Channel 4, which averaged 1.4 million viewers, a 7% share, between 9pm and 11.10pm. BBC2's 90-minute documentary Supergrass, about police informers from the 70s, averaged 1.8 million viewers, an 8% share between 9pm and 10.30pm. On Channel Five in the 9pm hour, the second series finale of US medical drama import Grey's Anatomy attracted 1.1 million viewers, a 4% share. This was 300,000 viewers and one share point up last week. In the 8pm hour, the first instalment of the Five's Grey's Anatomy double bill drew 900,000 viewers and a 4% share. At the same time the second episode of the new series of ITV1's Heartbeat pulled in 8.2 million viewers and a 33% share. This was up by 700,000 viewers and a share point compared to last Sunday. On BBC1, the final instalment of Victoria Wood's travel series, Victoria's Empire, attracted 4.9 million viewers at 19% in the 8pm hour. A live edition of Castaway in which contestant Hassan Kobeissi was asked to leave after a public phone vote pulled in 2 million viewers, a 10% share, between 6.15pm and 6.50pm on BBC1. This was up 200,000 viewers on the previous week but down one share point. Source: http://media.guardian.co.uk/overnigh...079320,00.html |
HISPLOP LEAVES COMPETITION IN KNOTS
It was hardly a fair fight with Ian Hislop's scouting documentary in one corner and a glossy Living TV show starring Abbey Clancey and Janine Dickinson in the other. But the Private Eye man won all the same. Scouting For Boys on BBC4 - in which Hislop told the story of the Robert Baden-Powell book that kick-started the scouting movement - had 319,000 viewers at 9pm last night, according to unofficial overnights. The programme had nearly triple the 114,000 viewers of the first instalment of Beauty and the Best on Living TV. The show follows Dickinson trying to help Clancey - the on-off girlfriend of England footballer Peter Crouch - break America as a model. Beauty and the Best got the better of its Sky One rival, however. Last night's edition of fashion talent show Project Runway - the third of an 11-part run - averaged 107,000 viewers. Elsewhere in the 9pm slot on multichannel TV, More4's Relocation, Relocation had 265,000 viewers, while a Little Britain repeat on BBC3 had an audience of 362,000 people. PANORAMA RATINGS EXPLODE
The prospect of seeing Panorama reporter John Sweeney blowing his top at a Church of Scientology spokesman helped the venerable BBC1 current affairs programme to its biggest audience in its new Monday night slot. Last night's edition of Panorama, called Scientology and Me, was watched by 4.4 million viewers with a 19% share, according to unofficial overnight figures. The programme grew its audience by a million viewers during its 30-minute run, ending with a peak of 4.9 million in its second quarter hour. Panorama's average of 4.4 million viewers beat the previous high in its new Monday night slot of 4.1 million, for its investigation into the GMTV phone-in scandal last month. It was also Panorama's highest audience in any slot since September last year and its investigation into alleged football corruption. Undercover: Football's Dirty Secrets drew 5.2 million viewers for an hour-long special at 9pm on September 19. The other highest rating shows in the current run of Panorama include season opener Should I Fight Back?, with 4 million, and Undercover Midwives, with 3.9 million. Last night, Panorama was predictably beaten by Coronation Street on ITV1, which averaged 9.3 million. But it beat its ITV1 current affairs rival, Tonight, which drew 3.9 million viewers half an hour earlier at 8pm. At the same time as Panorama on BBC2, the second half of Giles Coren documentary Edwardian Supersize Me attracted 1.8 million viewers, while Channel 4's Dispatches: Gordon Brown - Fit For Office? drew 1 million viewers. Elsewhere last night, the first episode of new BBC2 series Power to the People started with 1 million viewers, a 4% share of the audience. The show, in which Cornish residents went to London's Islington to protest about the destruction of their local community, lost out to Channel Five's Hidden Lives documentary, The Man Whose Arms Exploded, which drew 1.1 million viewers. Power to the People, the first of a three-part series, was also beaten by Channel 4's Cutting Edge: Mind Your F-ing Language, with 1.2 million viewers. At the same time on ITV1, the first episode of Driving Me Crazy, in which former political correspondent John Sergeant railed against 4x4s, opened with 4.3 million viewers, just under one in five of the audience. Driving Me Crazy was predictably beaten by BBC1's drama New Tricks, which continued its strong run with 8.4 million viewers at 9pm, a 36% share. Another new ITV1 factual show, Teen Boob Jobs: Too Much Too Young, began with 3 million viewers at 10pm. Teen Boob Jobs lost out to a strong showing by BBC1's 10pm news bulletin, which attracted 6.3 million viewers, 30% of the audience at 10pm.
