Critically panned/rubbish movies that you’ve enjoyed

Either they’ve got rubbish reviews, people generally don’t like it, or films with low box office takings...

Brotherhood

Idle Hands, I love this film so much, got pretty bad reviews though

Heaven's Gate. One of the biggest flops in Hollywood history, but one well ahead of it's time and with some of the best cinematography you'll ever see:

Eddie. 05-12-2017 01:20 PM

Glitter and Gigli...

Alf 05-12-2017 01:22 PM

Anything by David Lynch.

LaLaLand 05-12-2017 01:55 PM

Hocus Pocus was poorly recieved iirc, shocking. Brilliant movie!

James 05-12-2017 10:25 PM

Terminator Salvation and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. City Slickers 2 is the other one that sprung to mind also, for some reason.

Amy Jade 05-12-2017 10:40 PM

White Chicks - 15% on RT but I adore it.

Truth or Dare - 22% on RT one of my favourite movies

King Gizzard 05-12-2017 10:46 PM

Suppose I better post one

King Arthur Legend of the Sword

Got absolutely trashed by critics but I really liked it and can see it becoming a bit of a cult hit down the line

RileyH 05-12-2017 10:47 PM

The Room is one of the best movies of all time

James 05-12-2017 11:01 PM

Howard the Duck (or 'Howard: A New Breed of Hero' as it was called here).

I remembered that from this list - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...ered_the_worst

Beyond the Poseidon Adventure from this list - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...otten_Tomatoes

I was talking about this masterpiece

JerseyWins 06-12-2017 02:25 AM

I agree with White Chicks (although I thought it was a pretty positively received movie? shocking that it's rated so poorly on RT)

I feel like The Butterfly Effect doesn't get enough praise... that movie was amazing. Chappie is pretty poorly viewed as far as I know but I liked it (a lot).

And something from the horror genre too, Wrong Turn is one of my favorites (I even kinda like some of the ones they made after the original).

LaLaLand 06-12-2017 03:54 AM

OH I've remembered one, The Mothman Prophecies!

LemonJam 06-12-2017 05:54 AM

White chicks is a classic tbqfh.

The Grinch springs to mind. Easily my favourite Christmas film.

Kazanne 06-12-2017 06:25 AM

Waterworld

The Room is a brilliant watch, although is obviously terrible.

White Chicks is one of my favourite comedy films. Probably 2nd after This is the End.

I liked Terminator Salvation way more than T3 and Genisys.

Rush Hour 3 wasn't as good as the first 2 but nowhere near as bad as it was made out to be.

Justice League and Suicide Squad were enjoyable enough, found them a similar quality to most of the Marvel films, a fun watch but you won't remember half of it a week later.

user104658 06-12-2017 12:33 PM

Sucker Punch. Gets panned for having a weak storyline but I guess for me the storyline really isn't the point... the action is flawless. Flawless. Also I get that some people don't like over-the-top / heavily post-produced action.

On the same note; Batman vs Superman. I still maintain that the director's cut is an excellent film, if you ignore a small number of glaring flaws:

1) Lex Luthor... who on a second viewing I didn't find that bad, just still not... well... Lex Luthor .

2) Lois throwing the kryptonite spear into the water. Unfathomable.

3) "Hey ur mum's called Martha too? Cool! Did we just become best friends??"

BUT other than that  It beats the vast majority of the MCU for me.

That can't be an unpopular opinion surely? Salvation was an OK standalone movie, it just didn't do the Terminator storyline justice IMO. But... T3 was dumb as a post and Genisys is absolutely ****ing ridiculous... like actually offensive.

Tom4784 06-12-2017 12:46 PM

The DCEU films (not counting Wonder woman obvs since that was a critical darling), They have their problems but I refuse to believe that any of them are any worse than Thor 2 or Doctor Strange (ohai magical Tony Stark with Inception's visual effects!).

I quite liked Blair Witch and I don't think it deserved the hate it got.

I liked Netflix's Death Note film, it's not a good adaptation of the source material but I enjoyed it as it's own thing.

There's probably more but I can't recall any others at the time.

I agree and also would easily put them above Hulk, Iron Man 2 + 3, Thor and... thought I sort of hate to say it as I do enjoy the characters... GoTG2.

Although maybe not Suicide Squad, I actually do think it's sort of... awful... and utterly forgettable. But I have a very strong suspicion that there's a good version of it lying in tatters all over a cutting room floor somewhere.

Another one: "Kevin and Perry Go Large" gets 5.4 on IMDB but, as I;ve said before, is quite blatantly a solid 10/10. I can only imagine it's been reviewed by a lot of non-Brits who can't quite fathom what they're seeing.

I love the GoTG characters but... in vol 2... the villain is stupid and obvious, a lot of the jokes try way too hard or run too long, and it just doesn't have the character that the first film had. It's all a bit empty... like a "filler" episode of a TV show. I think it suffered by being so popular, and they made a better film first time round when they had no idea that it was going to be a hit.

The only really fun parts are Baby Groot (then they made me SAD by turning him into teenage groot in the post-credits), and "I'm Mary Poppins y'all!"

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (has 27% on RT) I prefer it to the original.

Friday the 13th Part III (has 12% on RT) the best in the series imo

The Hills Have Eyes 2006 (has 50% on RT) one of the best horrors of the 00's

GOTG2 had an underwhelming first half and a great second half I thought. Splitting up the team for so long was a mistake but once they got back together for the second half, it got way better.
