Why does being LGBT have to define who you are?
 

Ive seen a few comments on her that every member of the LGBT community should campaign for equal rights.

But why should your sexuality have to define you? Why does it have to constantly be a talking subject? Why cant it be Something about you rather then who you are?

Being LGBT is a tiny, inconsequential aspect of who you are, I can never understand why people feel the need to make it one of their defining characteristics.

I'd imagine most people who don't have equal rights would want equal rights, surely? Not specific to sexuality, just as humans. Not everyone should have to campaign for them though, there's nothing wrong with showing respect for other people who campaign for them who have campaigned for them in the past though. The whole 'does it define you' thing, well no it doesn't but in terms of talking about equal rights it's other people who used sexuality to define and determine how lgbt people should be treated, so the 'being defined by' was imposed onto us and fighting for equal rights is a reaction to that and is actually a way towards no longer being defined by it and being treated the same as everyone else..

because when that "tiny part" of you has been used to discriminate against you for so long, it becomes a big deal

Yes but im talking about when you use to be arrested for being gay and **** like that its pretty tame to how it was

Get in line LGTB, equal rights for Pensioners, Disabled, Mental Health, NHS, and all the other groups under represented.

Women, disabled people, homeless people, people of different race and religions etc are all groups that can include gay people :laugh: The point being made was that some people discriminate against others regardless of what other 'category' they might fit in to specifically because they're gay... as it was claimed that that doesn't happen. (Yes other groups get discriminated against too but noone was actually denying that that happens).

No one said they were the most discriminated against, but they still are so there still needs to be a movement and people need to talk about it

I had a look at the Independent (lol) article. Not to trivialise what they went through, but at least half of the attacks are probably not to do with LGBT. I got mugged once, and it didn't cross my mind it was for any reason other than looking like I was an easy target who might have money in his pocket.

I take issue with people shouting words in the street being included as well.
