Cobra Kai - Karate Kid sequel series [now on Netflix]

Just noticed this.

Quote:

Cobra Kai is an upcoming American dramedy web television series based on The Karate Kid film series created by Robert Mark Kamen. The television series takes place thirty years after the original film and follows the reopening of the Cobra Kai karate dojo by old rivals Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence. It was created by Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald and stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka, reprising their roles from the films. It is set to premiere on YouTube Red in 2018.

Premise

Cobra Kai takes place thirty years after the original film and follows a "down-and-out Johnny Lawrence, who seeks redemption by reopening the infamous Cobra Kai karate dojo, reigniting his rivalry with a now successful Daniel LaRusso, who has been struggling to maintain balance in his life without the guidance of his mentor, Mr. Miyagi. The show is about two men addressing past demons and present frustrations the only way they know how: through karate.".....

cor blimey talk about a trip down memory lane takes me back to my crush (back in the 80s) of ralph macchio! lol please note there was no internet back then so we were limited to who we could crush on lol

Now I would be more likely to crush on William Zabka the kid that 'swept the leg' in the KK original film! before 'crane technique' classic kick moment ;) (used to be The Equalizers son in another true classic 80s show)

PS sorry for my flashback to being a teenager moment

music flashback ;)

One episode off finishing this, it's really enjoyable actually, funny and nostalgic

James 27-06-2018 02:17 PM

Yeah, it got good reviews. I was going to check it out.

Niamh. 27-06-2018 02:33 PM

The episodes are only half an hour long as well so you'll fly through it

Spoiler:

I thought it was really funny how they brought in the idea of that alternate Karate Kid theory where Daniel was the bully all along :laugh2:

Didn't know about this until I saw it was coming to Netflix. Half way through season 2 it's been great!

She appeared by Social media at the end of Season 2. Do you watch it? Myself and Luke are addicted to it, he's a black belt in Karate so spends all the karate bits critiquing them

I told you about it.

I mean properly appearing as an actress. I love it, it's great. Really cheesy and low budget but I enjoyed every minute of it.

oh fgs of course you did, I had forgotten you were my TV guy back before the resurrection

Yeah, they really got it right which is incredibly difficult for something like that. I'd almost go so far as to say I prefer Cobra Kai to the original films

This was post resurrection, but keep going, I'm sure you can find a few more different ways to tell me how instantly forgettable I am :fist:

The first film was great, but CK is easily better than the sequels which were pure trash.

Oh dear, I'm sorry [emoji23]

I had watched the first two episodes that were free on YouTube a while ago, but I just finished the two seasons now it is on Netflix.

Really loved this series. The first season especially put a big smile on my face.

Spoiler:

After I finished the first season I was looking for videos about it on YouTube, and I noticed what I thought was a big spoiler in the search suggestions. It said 'Miguel dies' and I was expecting that to happen in the crazy brawl in the final episode, but it didn't. Although we don't know what will happen with him.

Season 3 teaser trailer.

Released January 8th 2021 on Netflix.

Niamh. 02-10-2020 07:11 PM

Oh can't wait for this

James 02-10-2020 10:25 PM

When they said 2021 I thought it might be late - like April - so January is good.

I've been re-watching it.

James 09-12-2020 02:23 PM

Yeah, I thought it was great. I'm watching it through again now. This show is really re-watchable.

Was just saying tonight, both Johnny and Daniel san are really really crap actors, but theirs something so special about the whole show!

Tom4784 07-02-2021 04:49 PM

The third season was absolute dirge, tbh. Too repetitive, too ridiculous. It's always been a show that required you to suspend your belief a little but it just went from 0 to Riverdale this season. Too over the top to the point that it's a chore to watch.

Strictly Jake 07-02-2021 05:53 PM

I agree Dezzy. I enjoyed some of season 3 but a lot of it I didnt. Whereas I loved season 1 and 2 and havent ever watched a series so quickly. Season 3 took more effort. I still havent seen the karate kid movies so I will watch them soon.

'Cobra Kai' Overtakes 'Bridgerton' in Nielsen Streaming Rankings

Telemundo's 'Mariposa de Barrio' also becomes the first Spanish-language program to make the weekly top 10.

Netflix's Cobra Kai and Bridgerton remained head and shoulders above the rest of the streaming world for the first full week of 2021, although the two shows swapped rankings from the previous week.

Cobra Kai topped the chart for Jan. 4-10, with Netflix users watching some 2.11 billion minutes' worth of the show's three seasons. Bridgerton slipped one spot to second place with 1.67 billion minutes, down about a billion minutes from the previous week. Cobra Kai lost about 500 million minutes of time.

Of note: Telemundo's Mariposa de Barrio became the first Spanish-language show to crack the top 10, finishing eighth overall and fifth among acquired series. Nielsen notes that the show may have received a recommendation boost from Selena: The Series, as more than a third of the latter's viewers also watched Mariposa de Barrio.

With The Office having moved to Peacock (which is not currently included in Nielsen's rankings) on Jan. 1, Criminal Minds took over as the most streamed acquired show. Netflix viewers watched 842 million minutes of the long-running crime drama. Pixar's Soul remained the No. 1 streaming movie on the four platforms Nielsen features in its rankings, racking up 520 million minutes of viewing time on Disney+.

Streaming platforms contend Nielsen's methodology doesn't capture the full scope of viewing on devices other than TV sets. Nielsen also only measures U.S. audiences, not those in other countries, and currently only includes Amazon, Disney+, Hulu and Netflix in its rankings.

I wasn't overly keen on Season 3 tbh

Tom4784 27-03-2021 08:50 PM

It lost a lot of the heart from the previous two seasons. It also became too contrived with characters acting a certain way just to push the plot in directions that didn't really feel natural.

The Slim Reaper 27-03-2021 09:23 PM

The kids are all really terrible actors, and even worse martial artists. The only good bits involve the original KK cast.

And they're all really annoying

James 27-03-2021 10:23 PM

What I like about it is that it is not cynical. It's about people trying to do the right thing, but not always succeeding.

My only criticisms of Season 3, were I thought the second fight in the final episode was a bit much after...

Spoiler:

The fight at the house. (which I heard was originally supposed to be in the Miyagi-do garden, but they couldn't do it because of the weather).

Also watching it again I did notice they repeated some of the scenes from previous seasons. eg. getting the tournament restored was like Johnny getting Cobra Kai reinstated in Season 1.

_Seth 27-03-2021 10:52 PM

Hmm I had low key noticed a decline in entertainment value for Series 3, but not heaps.

_Seth 14-04-2021 09:39 AM

Does anyone else feel absolutely no chemistry between Daniel and Amanda? They just have no on screen chemistry at all, even though they're fine actors. On top of that she's just always got this miserable, disapproving look on her fact and seemingly constantly has her arms folded.

Some of the looks she gives crack me up. She's often the voice of reason to Daniel.

Niamh. 14-04-2021 05:50 PM

Yeah tbf Daniel has some stupid ideas/does stupid stuff, it's no wonder she looks that way a lot [emoji28]

_Seth 14-04-2021 06:26 PM

But that's her entire presence and nothing else; disapproval and snobbishness. Some vibe of love should bleed through but there really is no chemistry. =/ It's like; what attracted them to each other in the first place.

Tom4784 14-04-2021 08:40 PM

Tbh, I wouldn't expect good acting from this show.

James 28-05-2021 08:09 AM
