Should national service be re introduced.

I think I would like 1 years service from 18-25 year olds in either a military or charitable role

No I think it should be an option, but not compulsory

Kazanne 26-03-2018 05:49 PM

I think some teens could benefit from it,so many are ferrel and have no respect,so especially for young offenders it coud be a good thing. It may work off some of thier anger, aggresion and disrespect.

It would have to be compulsory for it to work.

I know the government were thinking about discussing it in 2013.

They need to hurry up.

RichardG 26-03-2018 05:50 PM

i'd rather kill myself than go in the military

i'm not sure i'd particularly enjoy one year in a charitable role either. for me it would certainly take the 'charitable'-ness out of the act if you're forced into doing it.

I wouldn’t be happy to see my children forced into doing something they have no interest in, would you.?

I think teens are too young, i prefer giving them the option to do the year later on when they are into thier 20s.

All must do it though.

Probably not, but if its for the good of the country and was proven to better them then i would put up with it.

Beso 26-03-2018 05:54 PM

They could even spread the year over the 7 years.

Brother Leon 26-03-2018 05:59 PM

Nope.

smudgie 26-03-2018 06:06 PM

No.
If it’s not a free choice then it wouldn’t work.

Marsh. 26-03-2018 06:13 PM

Nope. Forcing something like that would be an incredibly backwards step.

Crimson Dynamo 26-03-2018 06:15 PM

Yes - it would benefit the multitudes of ill educated chavs we produce through poor sexual education and discipline.

YES

Underscore 26-03-2018 06:31 PM

NO.

Full stop.

Tom4784 26-03-2018 06:36 PM

**** no. Military service should be a choice, not something that's forced upon people.

It didn't help solve society's problems ills back when it was a thing and it won't solve any problems now.

Kizzy 26-03-2018 06:38 PM

No.

Tom4784 26-03-2018 06:40 PM

We don't take care of the veterans that chose military service, why would you want to throw people unwilling and unsuited to military service into situations they aren't prepared for and created more people that are damaged by their experiences and ignored by the state for it?

You get the choice, military or charitable.

They can pick charity work then.

Marsh. 26-03-2018 07:05 PM

What constitutes "charitable"?

Working for free in a charity shop? Flying to a war zone to feed the starving? A big spectrum.

Withano 26-03-2018 07:12 PM

Oh you wanna study medicine to become a doctor? Thats great. One year in Iraq first though. Laters.

Cherie 26-03-2018 07:14 PM

I would hate to be ordered to give up my time :worry: so I wouldn't wish it on anyone

Tozzie 26-03-2018 07:18 PM

I think it would be a good idea to sign up the unruly young people and repeat offenders. It could instil some discipline and respect into them. Also it may learn them how to take responsibility for their own actions.

jaxie 26-03-2018 07:24 PM

I think some would certainly benefit from it but I don't think it should be forced.

Matthew. 26-03-2018 07:31 PM

no **** that

what an awful idea

user104658 26-03-2018 07:54 PM

Compulsory indoctrination to unquestioning obedience of authority figures?

Is there a stronger word for "no"?

Life isn't like Suicide Squad, throwing criminals into armed service is just a bad idea all round.

Is it really charity if it's forced on people? As someone else said, what does charitable national service look like? What would be the point?

Typically when people speak of bringing back National Service, I tend to think it's a case of them looking back with rose tinted glasses. I don't think it worked much back then and it certainly wouldn't work now as the world is a different place.

Im glad youve finally seen the point.

Marsh. 26-03-2018 09:37 PM

Wait, so they get to decide when they get a year of their life taken away from them for no possible reason?

Remember that time I was about to perform life-saving surgery, but I was asked to hang up second hand clothes in a charity shop instead so I didnt.

Yes....whats up with that?

You would obviously get tax benifits for the year off!

On the whole old people are more disrespectful than the young though? Especially to shop workers etc.
