Is calling a female by 'woman' offensive?
As in saying 'woman' as alternative to calling the female by name. I don't think it is tbh, unless it's intentionally used to demean them. People get commonly called 'man' in conversation i.e. Hey man. So do you think it's bad to do that to females or is there no harm in saying it?
|
i feel like when it has that tone like 'woman! :oh:' it sounds a bit much but other than that no
i HATE when people call woman/girls 'females' though :oh: |
Its hardly the same way as 'hey man' though. I guess if someone used it as 'hey woman' it might be ok but its generally not in that way at all  Tone and intent matter tbh
I would honestly rather generally be called bitch than woman, love, hun and so on. And often am :D |

It depends on the context and tone

i thought hey man, was more of a unisex term, hey woman just doesn't have the same contextual meaning.
|
Its OK so long as its not said in a
aggressive fashion..................... |

It’s funny how the most PC person on here when it comes to sexuality doesn’t see anything wrong with calling a female woman.

I think anything could be offensive if you try hard enough really. But generally, no. Its rarely used with an intent to be offensive.

Don't GRIT your teeth at me like a dog, woman!
|
I don't like it much personally although not enough to worry about it
In work irish men call the till ladies 'woman' and me and a few of the younger girls get called 'cutty' or 'dolly birds' |

Sometimes I'm like "WOMAN! MAN IS HOME! BRING FOOD!"
But I have to be honest and say that most of the customers don't like it. |
I wouldn't say "offensive" but it's certainly rude if you're just shouting "Oi! Woman!"
|
"Hey woman, hey woman, why don't you come down here, and I'll show you a real man"
What film is that a quote from? |

I am a woman, but strangers should call me lady:joker: |

You googled it didn't you? |
2 people have actually voted yes to this question, bizarre.
Women do not need special treatment. It's more insulting to think they do. |
i guess if done in the John McCririck context but i don’t think so apart from that example
|
It depends how it is said, like a lot of things really, I am a woman so that doesn't offend me,but if someone said 'Come here woman' I might feel different, but then again that could be said in a sensual way
|
Generally don't mind being called a woman (obviously) unless it's preceded by an order, because at that point I'm not being asked, but told to do something based solely on my gender, which is offensive.

Like with just about any word... it depends on the tone and context of how it is used...
There are a few words that are tainted with a negative vibe... and woman is not one of them in my book. I've had word used in a joking manner towards me, and I don't find that particularly offensive. I think if I it had had the opposite reaction for me and I had pushed... they would've felt really bad, as I think many of my male companions use it during banter as a term of acceptance... kind of like, glad to have a woman here that can take some hits as well as give it back. |
Hmm it depends on the context really if someone referring to me said 'that woman' then that wouldn't bother me at all but for someone to address me as 'woman' then that's pretty insulting IMO

Silly Mooo - (Alf Garnett)
Err' (her) Indoors - (Arthur Daley) The Enemy - (Del boy used that one a few times) Now we're questioning whether just the word "woman" is offensive. Is this what we believe progression to be? |
Bint or badger is a more affectionate term..."woman" to me always sounds like the woman is being scorned.....
I would say "her over there" if i was talking to someone about the female in the vicinity. |
