Are you OBESE?

The term "obese" describes a person who's very overweight, with a lot of body fat.

Obesity is generally caused by consuming more calories – particularly those in fatty and sugary foods – than you burn off through physical activity. The excess energy is stored by the body as fat.

Obesity is an increasingly common problem because for many people modern living involves eating excessive amounts of cheap, high-calorie food and spending a lot of time sitting down, at desks, on sofas or in cars or playing video games.

do you struggle to tie your shoelaces? If you are obese do you know why and do you know how bad it is for your health?

Nicky91 26-07-2018 07:12 AM

no i'm not obese, i'm more like a healthy weight for me being tall, if i was less tall then i would've been obese with my current weight i think

Cherie 26-07-2018 07:12 AM

No I am not! :smug: I am very careful with my diet now though because as you get older it gets harder to shift :nono: also I have cut right back on alcohol and sugar... my son had a knee operation in March and we spent alot of time on hospital transport as he had to have his knee in a straight position and couldn't go backwards and forwards in the car, the number of people we sat in that ambulance with who had diabetes, and had to go to the hospital to have injections in their eyeballs every month, frightened the living daylights out of me

Why does extremely obese look like me

Ammi 26-07-2018 07:19 AM

..I’m the very opposite extreme of obese..maybe I’m inbese...but my bones scream out for a little bit of obesity ways...

I wouldn't say that I'm obese now, but when I was a kid I was a bit chubby but again never huge like some kids sadly get.

when i was young i played outside as there were no kids tv during the day (till 4) and there were no phones, tablets or PS4

now kids and adults spend hours in front of screens eating so its no wonder

Tbh it's all down to good parenting on if the kid is getting enough exercise.

Imo a lot of parents don't want to bother with their kids, or they don't know how to bond with their kids so instead of going out to have some fun and exercise, they just palm their kids off with a PS4 or a Phone.

Btw I love my PS4 so I'm not a hater of Video Games, but there is room for both a PS4 and exercise.

I'm sorry for waffling btw.:joker:

AnnieK 26-07-2018 08:10 AM

My BMI actually says i’m borderline

I’m stocky though.I weight train 3-4 times a week and kickbox twice a week so i’m not fat.Around 12-13% body fat atm.

I don't think calculating BMI purely on height and weight is 100% accurate anyway when you take body types into consideration.

Right now I'm normal weight, last year I had started to venture into over weight territory but I've lost 2 stone since January :hee: Just being extra careful now to watch what I'm eating now so that doesn't happen again

Yeah i think BMI is silly.I’m pretty short so it doesn’t take that into consideration.

Well done for losing the weight it can be tough to get off :clap1:

Yeah Gav is the same, he's got a stocky build but he's not very tall so he's heavier than alot of people his height eventhough he's not fat

Thanks, it was pretty easy when I really started taking note of what I was eating and now I'm at a weight I'm happy with I find if I stay good during the week, I can break out a bit at the weekend and still stay as I am (so far anyway!)

2 stone is amazing, I have been trying to lose half a stone for about a year, and only shifted it this year when I stopped drinking wine at home, only drink now when I go out

Yeah,I tend to try and bulk up through the winter and cut fat down just after for the summer.
I found calorie counting was the key but just eating less didn’t cut it after you’ve lost a certain amount. You have to start watching what you eat too.
My new diet is trying to stay off processed foods and i only drink on occasions now.
I found you can actually eat alot more if you stick to fresh food rather than frozen stuff from packets so you don’t feel too hungry.
Still have splurges from time to time and go out for meals though.
Just have to go without the next day.

:nono: Sugar and other excess refined carbohydrates LT. "Fat" is not the problem (unless it's hydrogenated fat). Obviously you'll exceed your calorie limit if you go around eating cakes of butter, but no one actually realistically does that, whereas people DO much their way through a 200g bag of Doritos no problem.

The RDA for carbohydrates is something like 220g. A more realistic healthy target is 100 - 150g, and that should be from "good" sources like fruit and vegetables. Most people are consuming 400+g, and most of it empty / nutritionally void. Too much sugar, too much pasta, too much bread, too many potatoes. That is why people are fat.

Main culprit is fizzy drinks. That's why people cut out a load of food and end up confused when they still don't lose weight... when they're drinking 50g of sugar or more a day.

BMI is inaccurate if you have higher than average muscle mass tho.

I prefer fresh food over processed ****e anyway tbh. I joined Sliming World which is kind of calorie counting without calorie counting. Like they have foods grouped in a different way but it's basically the same principle of what you just said most "free" foods are just non processed

well, whatever you're doing Niamh, it is working if that wedding photo is anything to go by.. tantalizing curves
