I don't think this is his final Joker look, I think this is his comedy act look that failed, THEN he'll adopt something more "sinister" once he snaps.

This has so much potential, guy's an incredible actor.

I quite like the idea of it, he looks like a man in the midst of a breakdown and it's a bit different, a bit darker perhaps due to the John Wayne Gacy-ness of it all.

Yeah it has so much potential to be brilliantly dark and twisted. Very exciting to see what Phoenix's take on the character will be.

The script draws inspiration from Scorsese's films Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and The King of Comedy, as well as Alan Moore's graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke.

Warner Bros. described the film as "an exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale".
Scorcese was originally set to produce but left the project. BRADLEY COOPER is a producer along with Emma Tillinger Koskoff (Wolf of Wall Street producer).

Super hyped for this!!!

Looks awesome. I love how amateur the look is, makes it more creepy.

LaLaLand 23-09-2018 12:15 AM

It's like a mix of every previous Joker (you can definitely see elements of Ledger, Nicholson and Romero) with the Killer Clown craze-look thrown in, genuinely freaky.

....he looks like someone who has just dressed the part for a Halloween party or something...in a good way though, a different take on the character...he’s one of my favourite actors and I think he’ll be excellent as the new Joker...I have to say, I’ve always been slightly terrified of the Joker...

Oliver_W 24-09-2018 07:15 PM

I like the Harley Quinn touch.

How many films is he due to make? The dumpster fire that is the DCEU can't seem to keep actors for more that two or three films...

Just this one I believe, it's a standalone Joker "origins" story, on how he came to be what he is. Much lower budget than regular superhero movies of today too, which could benefit it massively if it gives off a gritty, almost "B movie" vibe.

The gist is he's a failed stand-up comedian/novelty act and he has a breakdown and becomes the "Joker" we all know and love. :joker:

Quote:

The Joker quits his job as a Lab assistant, becoming a stand-up comedian to support his pregnant wife. Unsuccessful, he agrees to help mobsters with a robbery and dons the Red Hood. The heist goes awry; the comedian leaps into a chemical vat to escape Batman, surfacing disfigured. This, combined with the earlier accidental death of his wife and unborn child, drives the comedian insane and he becomes the Joker.
Idk how much of that this movie will stick by, but the failed stand-up part is confirmed in.

LaLaLand 24-09-2018 07:30 PM

He's terrifying!

Really looking forward to this.

Seems like filming is complete and they're not editing. Exciting!

So, in terms of the whole Batman/Joker dynamic in this, it seems Bruce Wayne is a kid in this movie and his Dad Thomas is running for Gotham Mayor.

Quote:

Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck / Joker:
A failed stand-up comedian disregarded by society who is driven insane and becomes a psychotic criminal mastermind. Phoenix is the seventh actor to portray the Joker in a theatrical film; prior to his casting, Leonardo DiCaprio had been considered.[6] Phoenix had been interested in a low-budget "character study" of a comic book character and his agent recommended that he set up a meeting with Warner Bros. to discuss, but he ultimately declined. Phoenix later became interested when the project was announced, stating, "It feels unique, it is its own world in some ways, and maybe ... It might as well be the thing that scares you the most". Phoenix lost a considerable amount of weight in preparation.

Brett Cullen as Thomas Wayne:
A billionaire philanthropist running for mayor of Gotham. Unlike the source material, he plays a role in the Joker's origins and is less sympathetic than traditional incarnations. Alec Baldwin was initially cast in the role, but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts.

Dante Pereira-Olson as Bruce Wayne: The young son of Thomas Wayne, who in his adulthood becomes the Joker's archenemy Batman.

LaLaLand 23-03-2019 01:50 AM

Joker & Batman in this movie :omgno: Kinda here for this dynamic tbh.

Joaquin's gonna kill the Joker performance

LaLaLand 30-03-2019 07:20 PM

"Joaquin Phoenix’s ‘Joker’ Is the ‘Character Study of a Mentally Ill Person,’ Says Marc Maron"

Quote:

“I think it’s a very interesting approach to this world,” Maron said of “Joker.” “I’ve been somewhat judgemental when it comes to comic book movies and I’ve got a little pushback in the press for being a hypocrite…The approach that Todd Phillips has taken is more of an origin story and a character study of a mentally ill person that becomes The Joker. It’s more of an intimate and gritty movie with a very specific scope. It’s going to be really interesting to see how it comes out.”

While the superhero movie genre is currently Marvel crazy thanks to the success of “Captain Marvel” and the upcoming “Avengers: Endgame,” Warner Bros. and DC could be the only thing superhero fans are talking about come the fall. “The Hangover” director Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix are putting their own stamp on an iconic Batman villain in “Joker,” an R-rated prequel film that is bound to attract a lot of attention. The movie stars Phoenix as a failed stand-up comedian named Arthur Fleck who is driven insane and becomes the Joker. The film co-stars Marc Maron, who recently teased the project in an interview with NME.

Maron has been critical about superhero movies but said he couldn’t pass up the chance to act in scenes opposite Phoenix and Robert De Niro. The latter is playing a popular late night talk show host who somehow plays a part in Arthur’s psychological downfall and transformation into the Joker.

“If you get a call and someone says, ‘Hey do you wanna do a scene with Robert De Niro and Joaquin Phoenix?’ your principals fall to the wayside,” Maron said. “I did a week in New York and did a scene with De Niro and Phoenix. I couldn’t believe it was happening, but once I got there I was like ‘Here we go. Let’s do the job.’”

Maron’s character has yet to be revealed, although if he shot scenes with De Niro and Phoenix it’s safe to assume his role is somehow related to the late night talk show. The comedian and podcast host is a series regular on the Netflix comedy “G.L.O.W.” Maron said acting opposite De Niro wasn’t as intimidating as one might think.

“It was great to meet him and it was great to see him work,” Maron said. “I wasn’t really beside myself because they do become people very quickly. When you’re not shooting you are just hanging around. Still, he’s Robert De Niro and the subtleties of how he does what he does is innate and amazing to watch. He’s a nice guy and kinda shy, but it was a great experience and not too much of a mind****.”

As for working with Phoenix, Maron said he didn’t really get the chance to do so, as the actor went method to play the Joker and rarely appeared out-of-character on the set. “I didn’t really get to talk to him because he was pretty immersed in The Joker,” he said. “I was just like, ‘I’m not gonna bother that guy’. That was fine. You just gotta respect people’s process.”

Joker Floors CinemaCon with Dark & Sadistic First Footage

Trailer spoilers if you can't wait until tomorrow:

Spoiler:

And from the sounds of the footage, it definitely comes on like a raging tragedy in the truest sense of the word.

The teaser kicks off with Arthur Fleck in therapy, giving Joker a real name new to the character. Phoenix says this in voiceover: "My mother always tells me to smile and put on a happy face. She told me I had a purpose, to bring laughter and joy to the world."

The footage cuts to Arthur bathing his mother, played by American Horror Story mainstay Frances Conroy. We then see the future clown get attacked in the streets of Gotham, and this incident appears to push him down a very dark path. Arkham hospital is shown in fleeting glimpses.Thomas Wayne is seen on TV talking about Arthur Fleck's crime spree. The City of Gotham is name dropped a number of times.

"Is it just me, or is it getting crazier out there?"

The trailer shows Arthur Fleck trying on different clown outfits as he attempts to discover his true Joker persona. He first dresses as a clown with a big green afro, which we've seen in some of the set photos shared by director Todd Phillips. Fleck eventually dyes his hair green, with the teaser presenting its money shot. Joker is seen in what will be his iconic villain costume. The voiceover continues.

"I used to think my life was a tragedy. But now I realize, it's a comedy."

WOW sounds incredible.

James 03-04-2019 02:15 PM

I like that trailer.

Tony Montana 03-04-2019 02:29 PM

Damn it James, you beat me to it!

Trailer looks amazing. Joaquin killed it! I truly think his joker will be the best ever.

Hopefully he wins an Oscar for it.

LaLaLand 03-04-2019 05:47 PM

Even from the trailer you can just see this is going to be something special.

Amazing actor and perfect for a role like this. WOW!

LaLaLand 03-04-2019 06:05 PM

The young boy in the trailer that gets his face distorted into a smile by Joker through the bars is BATMAN/Bruce Wayne.

Jordan. 03-04-2019 06:12 PM

Hyped

James 03-04-2019 06:19 PM

Now one of my most anticipated films. Looks like it is a Taxi Driver / King of Comedy type character film.

Definitely! The fact DeNiro is in this too makes it even a bit more special, King of the character study!

Tony Montana 03-04-2019 06:24 PM

Phoenix definitely will pull off the Joker role.

Anyone who doubts him should watch ''The Master''

James 03-04-2019 11:58 PM

'Is it just me or is it getting crazier out there...'

That's a great line.

LaLaLand 04-04-2019 12:26 AM

The scene of him hunched over doing whatever he's doing makes me squirm abit, all the bones and muscles in his back sticking out. Ugh this is gonna be so good.

LaLaLand 16-06-2019 06:34 PM

This is Rated R apparently.
