New Years Honours 2019 - Micheal Palin Knighted
So was Alistair Cook
Twiggy was made a dame |
Cool! Still think John Cleese and JK Rowling should be knighted/damed.
|
Time this nonsense was scrapped.
Just give awards to real heroic acts. As for services to charity as a reason, (actually the best people don't shout about what they do),they give often only out of their surplus most of the time. Hardly any hardship. For me, these awards of titles and honours overall just get worse. |
Palin is so deserving of this tbh

Phillip Pullman is to be knighted as well :D some good choices this year.
|
not sir michael palin now
that makes me puke, him getting that title before John Cleese, so undeserving :( |
The toffs and political class love their cricket, whereas Wayne Rooney plays a working class sport. So no surprise to see Alastair Cook Knighted.
They also prefer their rugby union to the working class sport of Rugby league, so no surprises that Bill Beaumont gets a knighthood while Billy Boston doesn't. They'll soon want us when war kicks off. |

i get annoyed when people get an honour for what they are paid to do. I also get annoyed when some independently wealthy person gets an honour for giving to charity when it has zero impact on their life, and their sole purpose is to get some recognition for it.
When you take all those out, it doesn't leave many that are actually justified  |

Doesn't Palin do a hell of a lot of charity work

I think Cleese once mentioned he was offered a "Commander of the British Empire", but turned it down because he wouldn't be addressed as Commander Cleese, but that sounds like a joke. |

Good news for Palin and Pullman, two of my heroes. Not stopping to try to make sense of all the negativity in this thread though. You can't please all of the people, apparently.

Will Palin now be Sir Michael Palin of Ni? |

Not Dame Twiggy. :joker:

I think most of the awards go to members of the public rather than celebrities.

if you're a moderately successful actor and live long enough you're bound to get it, that's not right
also someone should highlight and scrutinize those selected for political reasons just for transparency's sake and some names of those gongs should be changed, british empire is gone so |

The ones that do get it tend to have done a little bit more than that to get the recognition. |

E.g. Helen Mirren said she'd been first offered damehood years before she actually changed her mind and accepted Wouldn't be surprised if JK Rowling has been offered and declined I know I exeggarated the argument but still, that's the impression I get sometimes |
