I don't know what it's going to take to make people realise there are too many people. Maybe David Attenborough, showing us some pictures of million of people dying of hunger, and then pleading with people to have no more than two children.

Speaking of David Attenborough, he did make a comment on that before, not sure if you saw that video but his opinion was countries where women had control over their own reproductive systems, populations where decreasing and massiverly the opposite where they didn't.

I don’t buy anything that isn’t free range, the thought of those factories makes my stomach churn

A friend of mine was dealing with a "free range" farmer through work one time and he told her that free range guidelines are pretty misleading. people imagine chickens running free on farms all day, when in fact to qualify (and charge much more for the eggs and meat) as free range, they only have to have the chickens outside for a small percentage of time everyday so alot of times free range isn't much better. i was really disappointed to learn that. (This was in Ireland, not sure if it's the same rules in Britain or not)

I know, me too, she literally only told me that a couple of weeks back. I mean it's still better than not free range but doesn't sound like it's that much better or as good as i thought

yes this is true, here when they label certain foods as organical (vegetables without pesticides on them against lice and other contaminating bugs) and charge a lot more for it, while quality from normal vegetables or organical isn't much difference from the grocery store

i already have fruits from my own garden, and now also since recent years more vegetables than before, it is also quite good quality and cheaper when you grow it yourself in your garden

strawberries for example, in the store they are soooo dense and lacking flavour, while homegrown they are great texture and lots, lots of flavour

It's vile all of it , apparently chickens are the worst treated of all the animals , but the gross goings on ,on those farms is disgusting and inhumane , we will pay for our terrible treatment of animals infact I'm quite sure it's already started . we are too arrogant to ever learn.

Alex is planning to grow veg this year. I predict it's never going to happen. Unless the process includes some kind of computer program or video game, or it encompasses hitting a ball with a bat, there's no way....

I buy my eggs from a farm where the chickens are so free range they try to get in the car with you when you leave.

Yeah, that's the only way to get proper free range it seems, if you buy local from a place you know. I'm going to look into finding somewhere like that

I have no doubt you will do it Niamh. Maybe I'll have a go another year, because it's definitely not happening this year. I grew runner beans one year, I was dizzy from my own success... and they tasted amazing! It is satisfying to eat something you've grown even though I've only done it once.

My friend has a couple of rescued factory hens. They were really shabby when he got them with lots of bald patches. Now they live in a lovely fenced in garden with their own little house and the eggs taste amazing. I would quite like to do that. Have rescued chickens, not lay eggs.

All I ever grew was some sun flowers back when i was a kid :laugh: So I may be being a bit ambitious

I can get goose eggs this way, and buy them for family and that. But I don't like them. Seem..sour. I keep telling the farmer to get some bloody chickens but for some reason she won't.

That doesn't mean we don't have a responsibility to make sure they have a decent standard of welfare.

As for growing own stuff, does my daughter planting a full bloody pineapple in the ground to 'grow a pineapple tree' count? Heh. That makes me remember, we still have to remove that. We left it as she was hysterical at the thought of it being taken out and its doesn't matter as such, but I wonder if shes forgotten it yet.

Shes also in the past planted potatoes, this was ages back...will that actualy grow some? :suspect:

We should probably have a little garden come to think of it as shes so into growing stuff. We would have to kind of half our small garden, and a big issue I think would be, theres only a few inches between the grass and the cement underneath! Mind, the 'few inches' was enough to bury a pineapple almost completely I guess :laugh:

My grandad had a large veg garden, some of my most fond memories are of me nicking his peapods off the bush constantly and getting wrong for it but they were bloody lush!

Maybe so,(but they do make nice pets)but to treat them so badly while we have them is inhumane and barbaric, those chickens in those crowded cages would probably wish if they could,they were never born, and the way they are killed doesn't bare thinking about.

I bought a starter pack of seeds for mine, they weren't expensive and I reckon you would have enough soil, just get some compost and top soil too. You should get her into it, it'd be a good interest for her
