Race isn't an important part of Bond's character, Fleming always intended the character to be a neutral character, an 'anonymous instrument'. Hell, he was inspired by the films to make James scottish in the later books he wrote so that tells you that Fleming considered James' background to be malleable to change and reinvention.

The way James Bond was written and created makes him a character that can be changed and relaunched quite easily. The only thing about him that should remain consistent about his identity is that he is a man.

The Shaft example is a pretty bad one since Shaft was a blaxspoitation film and Shaft being black is an integral part of his character because of it.

I doubt Fleming would be against it either given that he retconned elements of the character after the films were made. There's grounds to suggest he intended the character to be, like in the films, constantly changing.

Of course he did, funny how Idris Elba is british when there's an article about him being the first "African" on the cover of British Vogue but he's not British enough when Bond is mentioned............

I've always felt that Gerard would've made a terrific James Bond. I love his performances in 300 and Law Abiding Citizen. Shame his Hollywood career never fully took off.

I just explained why G. Bond is white. Shaft is black.... they'd never, ever allow a white man to play him, and neither should they. I could go, like how he's obviously white in the books, that he's always been a white character. There's absolutely no racial undertone to this, I just think casting a black man in the part would be wrong. Like Shaft being cast as a white man.

Again, Shaft is a black character in a blaxspoitation film series. Being portrayed by a black man is integral to his character. James Bond's race, nationality or even hair colour has never been integral to his character. He was originally english until Fleming retconned him to being scottish which allowed the character be open to re-interpretation.

You can't compare the two characters unless you ignore a whole bunch of **** to force the comparison to work. As long as James Bond is male and British, the rest is up for interpretation.

Dezzy has pretty much answered but to add, these worlds are not real. The creators are not going for maximum reality in these adventures so I have no problems with either character being any race.

There was a big fuss over John Boyega playing a black Stormtrooper and over Gwendolyn Chrtistie playing a female Stormtrooper in the recent Star Wars series but the films went thru and the fans got over it.
