June Brown has quit EastEnders as Dot Cotton

Quote:

EASTENDERS legend June Brown says she has quit after 35 years as chain-smoking hypochondriac Dot Cotton after being disappointed by her recent storylines.

The 93-year-old telly favourite said she turned down the chance of a retainer contract but admitted: “It’s almost as if I’ve been bereaved.”

Arguably the soap’s best-known remaining cast member, her character had not been since last month when she left a voicemail for Sonia Fowler, played by Natalie Cassidy, 36, saying she had moved to Ireland.

June has now said: “I don’t want a retainer for EastEnders, I’ve left. I’ve left for good.

“I’ve sent her off to Ireland where she’ll stay. I’ve left EastEnders. I did make up a limerick. It’s a bit dirty.

“I went back to do a good story. Alas and alack, when I got back it had gone up in smoke.

“I got a small part, a very small part. And that ended up as a big wet fart. Alas and alack, I will never go back.”

The veteran actress has been a regular in Albert Square since just after the BBC1 soap began in 1985, apart from a break between 1993 and 1997. She also took six months off in 2012 to pen her autobiography.
Don’t feel good about linking The Sun so I’ve removed the link but felt this was a big news story. Not giving the tabloids the clicks anymore!

IM SCREECHING @ the limerick ending her time of 35 years that’s why I posted it here

Kate Oates - MURDERER!!!

Marsh. 20-02-2020 10:48 PM

A shame that of all the people to have been in the show, after all those years, not to get a final storyline.

Greg! 20-02-2020 10:59 PM

Omg I hope they can tempt her back with an amazing exit storyline :( legend who deserves nothing less

Alf 20-02-2020 11:02 PM

Ooo I say.

Amy Jade 20-02-2020 11:28 PM

In all honesty I think leaving Dot in Ireland is fine, I'd hate to see a Peggy rehash and watch Dot suffer, leaving her happy with family seems really nice after all she's been through.

Kate! 21-02-2020 02:06 AM

Good riddance. She was well past her sell by date.

I'm hearing that she quit to have more time for The Masked Singer series two rehearsals

Jessica. 21-02-2020 07:22 AM

I think she is the right person for a peaceful exit like that. What was her last storyline?

Jigs 21-02-2020 09:34 AM

I don't think Dot needs an exit storyline tbh. With her being 93 irl it just makes sense that she moves away and dies offscreen since June is likely to follow suit shortly after. Killing her off would be too insensitive to the fact that June is so close to death herself~

Denver 21-02-2020 10:16 AM

I wouldnt say she is close to death

No true Eastenders fan will ever say that

Kazanne 21-02-2020 11:49 AM

I love her character as Dot, but she probably wants to take it easy at her age and enjoy other things, will miss her though.

Dogeatdog 21-02-2020 01:11 PM

Haven’t watched EastEnders for a long time but it’s sad that she's leaving the show.

Bit harsh

Alf 21-02-2020 01:18 PM

Just think, she's washed Phil Mitchell's dirty underpants.

Liam- 21-02-2020 02:22 PM

Thrown her toys out of the pram because she didn’t get a main storyline? Bye, she’s not needed anyway, she hasn’t been good since she bumped off Nick

Yes this exactly.

Alf 21-02-2020 02:27 PM

The disrespect for Dorothy Cotton is shameful.

She's been doing her thing as Dot, longer than most you have been alive.

Ditto. She was no Pauline, Pat or even Peggy.

Because she ie part of the furniture and has given the best part of her career to the show and is a good enough actress to carry on

Marsh. 21-02-2020 04:37 PM

It is a shame.

The show's last of that generation.

Doesn’t mean she’s been any more than a kindly supporting character for years and years. Indispensable she isn’t.

She is in her 90s what do you expect? Her to be getting pregnant by teenagers, jumping from cars, becoming a gangster and getting pissed and making a fool of herself?

Longevity and status doesn’t put a character above criticism or personal preference.

Beso 21-02-2020 05:17 PM

Nick wins the lottery and gives it all to ma.

Also I'm sure Insyrance will only allow her to do so many hours at her age

Well if the insurance company say they will only insure her if she works on a certain contract it makes it even harder to be in every scene and every episode

Doesn’t mean she was unanimously liked even when she was more prominent. People are allowed to have their likes and dislikes.

Denver 21-02-2020 05:34 PM

Not like she has done anything to be hated
