Trials of a coronavirus vaccine could begin within the next month, the Government's health agency has said, as it prepares to start evaluating a drug developed by Oxford University.
Scientists at Public Health England (PHE) could give the go-ahead for human testing well ahead of the usual time frame for drug development.
The health agency is only due to start preliminary evaluation of the vaccine next week.

People identified as belonging to one or more of the at-risk groups include those who have received organ transplants, those living with severe respiratory conditions or specific cancers, and some receiving certain types of drug treatments.
They will be contacted by their doctor strongly advising them to stay at home for a period of at least 12 weeks.

“If you receive a letter it is vitally important that you act on it for your own protection, don’t attend any gatherings of friends or families and don’t go out for shopping, leisure or travel,” said Paul Johnson, director at Public Health England.

The health secretary has said 4,500 retired healthcare workers have signed up to help battle the coronavirus outbreak in the UK.

It comes after NHS England struck a deal with independent hospitals to provide 20,000 fully qualified staff and 8,000 more hospital beds.

The NHS will also have access to nearly 1,200 more ventilators facilities and other critical care facilities that have come under intense pressure as the coronavirus crisis intensifies.
