Now JK Rowling is Islamophobic

The Witch hunt continues ............

JK Rowling has been accused of Islamophobia after an extract of her 2014 crime novel The Silkworm was shared to Twitter.

The Edinburgh-based author, 55, who writes the Cormoran Strike books under the male pseudonym Robert Galbraith, wrote a passage in the second book of the series where detectives suggest that a 'woman in a burqa' fed a murder victim 'halal takeaway' before death.

The passage continued: 'Can you think of another way of totally concealing your face and body that wouldn’t make people challenge you?’

It comes following accusations of transphobia against the Harry Potter writer after she slammed an article that used the term 'people who menstruate' instead of 'women'.

The row worsened after her new book Troubled Blood was released on Tuesday, which tells the tale of a man who dresses as a woman to kill his victims - a trope in literature that's been criticised by activists for perpetuating negative stereotypes about transgender people.

Now, she has come under fire again over her 2014 book, which has been accused of playing into both Islamophobic and transphobic prejudices, after British writer Laurie Charles posted an extract of the novel on Twitter.

The novel tells the tale of Cormoran Strike and his young assistant, Robin Ellacott who are trying to solve the murder of novelist Owen Quine who has written a poison pen book about almost everyone he knows.

Is there going to be a thread defending her against every tweet that has just 1300 RTs? Because it's getting boring to read

Fact is she shouldn't need to be defended when her views are perfectly reasonable.

You don't actually have to read the thread if you don't want to

Only bad writers rely on outdated, clumsy, offensive tropes to pad out their books, looks like she’s gone downhill since HP.

What do you find offensive about it?

I didn't say it did, its a pretty common opinion on her writing, and has been for decades

You'd think people would have long caught wise to the daily mail hand picking a few "outraged" tweets to cause further outrage but here we are

Which part of what she wrote is outdated or offensive?

I have to say, despite all of my other opinions on all of this in general, and despite the fact that I think the Harry Potter series is an absolute triumph of imagination and character/world building which is obviously also a huge part of writing ability... ... ...

...and having only read the HP series...

... ... :umm2: she isn't a particularly "skilled" writer. Her pacing can be dodgy, her dialogue is often extremely clumsy and clunky, her descriptive vocabulary is limited (and not in a deliberate "because it's for kids" way, in a repetitive way) and I'll be honest and say that what I have seen/heard of this other detective series (that I didn't even know existed) sounds like utter garbage. I mean that's just the truth of the matter here :joker:. Hogwarts is an amazingly well realised concept, the core HP characters are iconic and so well fleshed out, the lore building of the series is incredible, the over-arching plot (simple as it is) works and is good but that world - from what I've seen - is her work of art. The writing style itself is functional enough to get that world onto paper and into the imaginations of others, but I don't think many real fans of writing as a craft in itself could call it "great writing" with a straight face. The HP series is obviously massive, 7 books and several of them very long ones, so you'd expect some fluctuation in quality but there are some passages that are absolute howlers. Again, often dialogue.

So yeah I'm also not going to pretend that this passage about burqas isn't absolutely abysmal dialogue... but I don't think it's guilty of anything more than that.

Oliver_W 18-09-2020 10:23 PM

I agree TS, I've always loved the books and stories, but never thought they were amazing written. But Hogwarts feels like a real place, and all the named characters feel like real people.

Well, I wasn't asking for a debate on the actual quality. :oh:

Just that the quality of it isn't based on whether someone, years later, finds her politics problematic or not. There's far too many people revising their own tastes/likes/dislikes just because, shock horror, a person they've never met in their life doesn't hold all the same opinions and values as they do.
