Wetherspoons boss Tim Martin needs EU workers to tackle the shortage of bar staff

It seems some UK workers do not want
to return to their jobs.

joeysteele 02-06-2021 07:11 AM

I've really no time for him and wouldn't use any of his outlets either

Oliver_W 02-06-2021 08:02 AM

I guess it makes sense an unscrupulous capitalist would support the EU. Birds of a feather and all that.

Amy Jade 02-06-2021 08:03 AM

Serves him right for treating his staff so badly during the pandemic. I guess they took his advice to go elsewhere and are staying now as they get treated better?

Smithy 02-06-2021 08:06 AM

He was a big Brexit fan, glad to see that it’s worked out for him :)

No, he was a MASSIVE Brexit-buddy gammon and now he's like "Oh wait a minute, half of my staff were from Europe... come back! Waaaahhh!!"

It's hilarious. Hope they go under, ****ing ****hole.

I didn't realise that, I'd have assumed someone who mistreats their staff and only cares about the bottom line would have been all for the advantages the EU provides to such people. I guess he's reaping what he sowed either way :joker:

They haven't no.
However customers to his establishments help line his pockets further.
So I choose not to that.

Cherie 02-06-2021 08:22 AM

He was a Brexit supporter :hee:

that said the pandemic is supposed to have hit young people in the UK the most workwise, so not sure why there is a shortage of workers?

But Brazilians are hot, so it balances out

Crimson Dynamo 02-06-2021 08:51 AM

supporting Brexit never meant no immigration from the EU :joker:

it definitely wanted no illegal immigration and better controls on immigration

surely everyone on TIBB wants that?

Liam- 02-06-2021 09:01 AM

If only we could have seen this coming!!

bots 02-06-2021 09:03 AM

it doesn't really matter if the guy is a brexit supporter or not, he is a complete ass hole. Very unpleasant person, and for him it's very much a case of you reap what you sow

smudgie 02-06-2021 09:04 AM

If he treat his staff the way they deserved then he might find a big difference.
Decent hours for a decent wage, not too much to ask for surely.

my thoughts exactly.

thesheriff443 02-06-2021 09:15 AM

If you pay someone minimum wage that’s how much they are valued as a person by all companies.

So what if you leave you can be replaced for under a tenner.

Livia 02-06-2021 09:22 AM

Boycott them. They're awful places anyway.

There are so many nicer pubs, ones that haven't been jazzed up and weatherspoon-ised. And the staff in Weatherspoons always look kind of harrowed and traumatised.

user104658 02-06-2021 09:46 AM

The only good thing I can say about Wetherspoons is that it was the only pub "in the big town" that would serve us at 16. The small local pub we went to always did but that was in more of a grandmotherly "aw they're better off in here than out drinking on a street corner" way than a "I literally don't care about anything and am dead inside" way like the Spoons.

And I suppose, objectively, "they used to serve us without ID when we were blatantly underage" isn't actually a positive.

Other than that ... ... I mean. It was fine for cheap Uni pre-drinks but even then, union was cheaper. Anyone who goes there voluntarily as an actual adult I just have to worry about their sense of self-worth :worry:.

Like even if they did good chips that would make it more understandable but they're always luke-warm and undercooked.

And other pubs try to emulate that vibe for god knows what reason and it's awful. The local I "grew up in" - a proper, stale smelling, slightly dingy feeling old style pub with far too much dark wood everywhere - decided to "update itself" Wetherspoons style with lighter furniture and paint job and art on the walls and stuff and it honestly sucked the atmosphere out of the place over night. It went from being absolutely PACKED on a Friday night, to a few die-hard old regulars propping up the bar.

When they got rid of the stinky little back room that had a pool table and jukebox that was just the final straw. So many nights spent playing bad pool and listening to Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise" on loop as a teenager :flutter: (because the CD selector was jammed on "Now 1995" for 2 years :joker: )

Actually to follow up on that part, that makes matters WORSE for me because yes they do use some very nice properties (old banks, etc...) and seeing them turned into cheap pubs is really quite jarring :worry:.

Unironically this.

Retail spaces which are empty for over a year should be pulled down and turned into parks tbh. Or -reluctantly- affordable housing. Better to use existing buildings than ruining green spaces with them.
