Tory MP says poor people 'can't cook properly' and brags that meals can cost 30p

What a f ing moron. Jesus Christ!!

30p a meal? What world is this idiot living in. You can put your house on HIM never having a 30 pence meal too.

I know he doesn't speak for all Tories, but how can people vote for a party with tw@s like this a part of it?!

Oliver_W 11-05-2022 10:46 PM

30p a meal is pie in the sky, but it can't be denied that not rnough low-income people know how to cook properly, and how to budget and shop effectively in order to cook.
Dispel the myth that people are "forced" to live on ready meals and takeaways.

FFS. As opposed to Middle and Upper Classes who obviously know how to cook properly because ya know, they're better than those poor, dirty folk. Yep, if you're poor, you're also dumb and can't cook, of course!

Mr Anderson's Parliamentary expenses exceeded more than £222,000 in 2020-21, which saw an increase of nearly £50,000 on the year before. This figure also includes £165,200 on staff wages plus £32,100 on further office expenditures.

The Mirror reports he has also claimed back £21,200 on accommodation and £4,100 on travel and "subsistence." This included hotel stays, train tickets and £67.57 listed as "hospitality."
Awesome stuff right there!

But for real, it really beggars belief doesn't it?! (actually no, it doesn't, this a typical hardcore, old school Tory thing to say i guess)

that is coming from someone who probably referred to his student days 30 or 40 years ago. When I was a student in digs, we each put £5 in to a kitty every week and that was our food budget. Those days have long gone. A single person these days is probably looking at at least £30-40 per week and that is picking items that are cheap

Some are twisting what he said in
Parliament.

Saying some can not cook
is a valid point.

He works in a local Food Bank
helping them.

What he said in Parliament
has been twisted.

I heard this being debated on LBC yesterday The Trussel Group provide lessons on budgeting and cookery courses

https://www.trusselltrust.org/2017/0...okery-courses/

So what he is suggesting is already in place

What he appears to be missing now is that people cannot afford the energy to cook meals even if they know how to

I would like his receipe for meals for 30p though

user104658 12-05-2022 07:05 AM

It’s straight up false, cooking fresh costs as much as if not more than cheap oven-cooked junk. 15 years ago it was maybe true, but you can’t buy bulk ingredients all that cheaply any more.

That's awesome, it's the kind of thing that should be more widely known.

All of the Tory's are a bunch of brainless idiots, they're so out of touch with us 'peasants' . They'll never know what it's like to be poor let alone homeless. They only care about the wealthy & rich , aslong as they have their big house & car and money basically screw the rest of us.

They can't even pretend to have sympathy for the crisis people are in. They'd rather come out with insulting statements like this instead by slating people's cooking skills ,and treating us like we're stupid.

Bear in mind some people don't have a roof over their heads let alone a cooker to make food. They don't know where the next meal will come from .

AnnieK 12-05-2022 11:38 AM

As MTVN said they only meal that would come anywhere near 30p a person would be pasta with a tin of cheap tomatoes or very cheap jar of past sauce - not balanced or really healthy. Even that will still probably cost more than 30p

Even batch cooking in large amounts will not come in anywhere close - you can't get ingredients that cheaply anymore - even the cheap ranges in supermarkets

You do realise this bloke gives up his spare time to work at a food bank?

Exactly, like I said it’s not possible to get cheap bulk ingredients like it used to be. You could make a basic pasta dish, basic rice dish, I guess maybe a baked potato… but with literally no toppings. Even the cheapest jar of sauce would bring it to more than 30p, and making sauce from scratch costs more than a cheap jar.

Realistically, the cheapest you can do a family main meal for 4 on, that wouldn’t end in nutritional deficiencies, is about £5 per meal (so £1.25 per person) and tbh even that’s going to be basic.

Meat is expensive and people say “go veggie then” but the main thing vegans use as a protein substitute (beans and pulses etc) are actually not cheap.

Exactly it all adds up ,so unless he wants everyone to live of a lettuce leaf like a snail ? . I'd like to know what meal out there costs 30p aswell.

Exactly, I have a meeting after work so needed stuff for a quickish easy meal tonight. I have just bought tinned tuna, jacket potatoes and salad stuff - trying to get something relatively balanced meal and even that (with supermarket tuna as my weirdo kid prefers the cheap stuff) has come in around £1.50 - 5 times the amount he has said you can cook for.

I think the only way to cook a meal for 30p is to visit the food banks that he has said are not needed

The gas/electricity to cook a meal is going to be more than 30p ... forget the cost of the food

It’s giving big ‘just stop being poor’ energy

That's why people will go hungry and freeze to death.winter will be even worse.

Swan 12-05-2022 01:25 PM

Even if you could make a meal for 30p, as mentioned in here, it would be piss poor unhealthy food, with next no nutritional value whatsoever. Why should anyone have to live like that anyway??? You know he bloody isn't.

He's the same kinda of person who'll be complaining poor people are too fat next, due to rubbish diets and 'laziness'.
