My car's going in for an MOT at 4:30

And I'm still in my dressing gown and need to do a workout.

I hope it doesn't fail!

My window wipers are really blunt, but I'm hoping they miss that part or pass me and let me buy some. I'll just act deaf and dumb when they mention it.

here they would fail you on a visual but pass if you came back to show them the new wipers, they wouldn't just take your word that you would do it

it depends on the garage. Many garages fail the car so that they get the retest and repair cash. It's difficult to find a garage that isn't out to scam you, but i've been lucky with my local garage

Niamh. 13-07-2022 12:50 PM

Oh we have to actually go to NCT centres which are government run to get the "official" certificate

Swan 13-07-2022 12:56 PM

If all you're gonna need is some new wiper blades after a MOT i'd be very happy with that.

Niamh. 13-07-2022 12:57 PM

Why don't you just put new wipers on it before you go Thomas?

Exactly what we did last week, MOT was yesterday and it passed. Boy were we pleased.

So good luck Thomas.

bots 13-07-2022 01:12 PM

i would have thought from a safety perspective you would want good wipers

I'd want to order them online to save money and also the test is at half 4. I'll risk it

Yeah I do, problem is that I need to get my steering wheel module replaced first ideally which is about £300. I have a faulty one and this causes the wipers blades to swipe every now and again even when it's not raining. This is what has made them blunt. For the sake of them just going off occasionally I haven't had the module replaced.

thesheriff443 13-07-2022 01:29 PM

It won’t pass Thomas

You can surely pick up a cheap set locally? They take about 5 seconds to put on

Ughhh, it's effort.

Maybe Kwik fit will have a pair of it fails otherwise I'll order off Amazon.

Also my wipers have heated jets so I don't whether it needs a special wiper but I think the jets are not on the blade.

I haven't even done my workout yet. I'm sat here in my boxers cooling down

Mine expired in May but the nearest appointment I could get in any centre remotely close was September :skull: Just hoping I don't get stopped before then

Ours was well out , thought we'd get a reminder but didn't ! since discovered you have to tick a box to get a reminder so fingers crossed for next year. Also had to wait days for booking as they were so busy. All legal now.

I've drove around for months not realising mine has expired in the past. If you get pulled over just make out your foreign or something and can't understand a word of English.

ThomasC 13-07-2022 01:53 PM

You can have a free retest if it's wipers and you get it sorted before close of business next day I think.

Just means I will be stranded and have to get a lift, but surely they should sell a set anyway. As the weather's nice they might let me drive away.

I don't know. Oh well... We'll see.

 Yeah I don't think that would fly with them. It's the first NCT (MOT) I actually need for mine so I didn't even realise until I got an email about it and I tried booking straight away but there's a massive backlog, i can show them I booked it months ago, not my fault they didn't have a closer appointment so I'd say they'll probably give me a break (unless they expected me to drive hours away to get a sooner appointment :fist: )

Out of curiosity are you getting your car MOT’d at a Kwik fit? I’ve never heard good things about them, always told they’re the worst garages going.

MTVN 13-07-2022 06:01 PM

Don't give the cowboy garage a penny of your hard earned money Thomas

ThomasC 13-07-2022 06:15 PM

Guys I'm a bit peeved off really!! My car has failed.

Suspension arm ball joint dust cover no longer prevents the ingress of dirt.

I have done some research and seems like you have to replace the whole thing even if it's just a £2 bit of rubber so it's going to cost me. Also both my lights are too low so it failed for that too.

Didn't even mention or put as advisory my wipers which I'm shocked about.

The guy at Kwik thick are going to ring me tomorrow to give me a quote

Well our one has good reviews so I didn't think they were too bad, but I'm pissed now

MTVN 13-07-2022 06:34 PM

Standard, there's always something! Honestly the number of times I've been driving my car absolutely fine yet come MOT there's suddenly some MAJOR issue which absolutely needs to be fixed now at great expense. You fix that and the car runs fine for a year then next MOT - bam. Another issue.

MOTs should only be every 2 years max

Vanessa 13-07-2022 06:46 PM

Omg i read that like : my cat is going for an MOT. I think I've had too much sun :joker::joker:

bots 13-07-2022 06:48 PM

one time, i had to get a new headlight and it cost me £480, i sold that car a month later, i wasn't having that repeated

James 13-07-2022 06:48 PM

Having paid vehicle tax, insurance and MOT recently + £1.90 a litre petrol I concluded that the system is rigged against against car drivers.

I just googled about this and a lot of people say you are just best of to replace the whole arm as replacing just the dust cover is hard itself. It’s annoying I reckon they’ll probably quote you about £300ish. I mainly hope tho that they’re not scamming you or anything cause I always hear that Kwik Fit look for issues with peoples cars when there’s actually nothing wrong just to get money out of people.

I dread MOT’s but I’m fortunate enough to have a good BMW Indy specialist near me and they’re always really helpful.

Ouch. If mine did go I think it's thousands as they're LED, bending, shadow technology...but they're suppose to last the life of the car I think

I'm getting conflicted prices, between £90 to £300. Yeah I've read about replacing the whole thing too which just is really annoying considering if there's nothing wrong with the ball joint then why you can't just pay for for a rubber dust cap.

If they quote me anymore than £150 then I'll tell them to sod off and I will look elsewhere.

ThomasC 13-07-2022 07:08 PM

I've put a request in on fix my car then local garages send you quotes.

Will see what I'm quotes by garages and then what Kwik fit say
