Salman Rushdie attacked on stage in New York

Author Salman Rushdie, who suffered years of death threats after writing The Satanic Verses, has been attacked on stage in New York state.

The former Booker Prize winner was speaking at an event of the Chautauqua Institution at the time.

Witnesses say they saw a man run on stage and either punch or stab Mr Rushdie.

A video posted online shows attendees rushing onto the stage immediately following the incident.

A witness to the attack tells the BBC News Channel that those in attendance are "still reeling" from the events.

"It was just an absolutely horrific thing to witness," says Carl Levan.

He says he was sitting 14 or 15 rows back in the covered amphitheatre in New York state when the attack happened.

Rushdie was "repeatedly stabbed" after his attacker ran onto the stage from the audience's left, Levan says.

New York state governor Kathy Hochul has confirmed at a press conference that Rushdie is still alive.

Rushdie is "getting the care he needs" after being taken to hospital, says Hochul.

More information is being gathered about the perpetrator, she adds.

Crimson Dynamo 12-08-2022 05:06 PM

I wonder if the attacker shouted you know what just before?

I think Sky News think that Mr Rushdie is the problem in this.

What a headline from them after the guy has just been stabbed. But they don't care, it's all about clicks and attention.

bots 12-08-2022 06:24 PM

i don't think he is going to survive.....

Another account of the attack comes from John Nolen from US network CBS, who had family members in the audience of the event.

The assailant - who appeared to a man with a knife - is said to have struck Rushdie many times in the neck and torso area.

Rushdie reportedly stood up and fell backwards as he tried to get away. A number of people came to his aid and others restrained the attacker, Nolen says.

There appeared to be blood splattered on the screen behind Rushdie's chair.

Sky News have always been a scummy channel.

And seriously why does it feel like it's becoming a trend to physically attack people that you don't like? Can't people have a more healthy attitude when it comes to people that they don't like anymore?

The suspect who has been arrested, 24-year-old Hadi Matar, accessed the grounds the way any other event goer did, police say.

The suspect jumped on stage, stabbed Salman Rushdie in the neck at least once and in the abdomen at least once, police say.

People in the centre rushed the suspect and took him ground, and he was later taken into police custody.

I’m sure the fatwa put on salman was removed years ago.

Nope, it wasn't removed. The iranian government tried to say it was no longer applicable, but the religious boss said it was still in effect, and the iranian media have been topping up the reward too

Salman Rushdie's agent has said "the news is not good" after the author was stabbed at an event in New York state.

He was attacked on stage, and is now on a ventilator and unable to speak, Andrew Wylie said in a statement, adding that the author will lose one eye.

Mr Rushdie has suffered years of Islamist death threats after writing The Satanic Verses, published in 1988.

Police detained a suspect named as Hadi Matar, 24, from Fairview, New Jersey.

New York State Police said the suspect ran onto the stage and attacked Mr Rushdie and an interviewer at an event at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York state.

"Salman will likely lose one eye; the nerves in his arm were severed; and his liver was stabbed and damaged," his agent, Andrew Wylie said.

No motive or charges have yet been confirmed by police, who are in the process of obtaining search warrants to examine a backpack and electronic devices found at the centre.

Mr Rushdie was stabbed at least once in the neck, and at least once in the abdomen, authorities said. He was taken to a hospital in Erie, Pennsylvania, by helicopter.

Very true, I didn’t actually know that a number of people had been killed because of the book.

Well Hadi Matar will be a hero to the Islamic world if Rushdie dies. He will be the one who brought justice to a blasphemer..

Blasphemy is seen as a heinous crime deserving of death in Islam, according to many good Muslims. Salman is seen as Blasphemer, why else has that bounty been increasing over the years

It is not so long ago the UK had blaspheme law and an editor of Gay news was successfully convicted of blasphemy in a case brought by the late Mary Whitehouse.

We should not be quick to criticise Hadi Matar, as that would be Islamaphobia and anyone doing so will be sanctioned by lefties.

You reap what you sow.

Because anyone criticising Hadi will be seen as a bigoted Islamophobic Racist, and will be prosecuted :nono:

Are you a bigoted Islamophobic Racist?

Rushdie is 75, it's a big ask for him to recover from this

What about the six people killed by a mob at a us cultural centre because they didn’t like what was written in a book.

Personally speaking there shouldn't be an issue with pulling up issues with any community imo as long as it's constructive criticism.

Whether it be Hadi Matar or Mary Whitehouse, nobody should be able to punish someone else just because they challenge your beliefs.

If anything what this Salman Rushdie case has proven is that Islam has extremists in it's Religion, and that the moderate Muslims aren't really doing anything to stop them.

There's nothing bigoted or racist about criticism of a religion, and it's not a phobia when that religion is responsible for so many evils.

Those on the left would beg to differ. We have already seen this in the Labour Party up here in Newcastle, where someone was censured for accusing a group of Muslims of sharp electoral practices.
