What’s your optimal level of noise-stimulation like?

Not just on a Sunday morning but if you could have it your way all the time, how much outside noise (or not) would be around you?

Crimson Dynamo 21-08-2022 10:33 AM

i dont like noise and was very sensitive to it as a child. I dont like silence however so i have a radio in every room and when i go in, like to the kitchen on goes the radio.

When im working i do like noise like this..

Cherie 21-08-2022 10:39 AM

I can literally sleep if a bomb drops, not a big fan of people playing music loudly in their gardens unless it is a party or something, luckily we are fairly lucky in that respect, like listening to the radio when I am working, but also pretty happy to sit in silence

bots 21-08-2022 11:34 AM

i have tinnitus so some background noise is necessary to stop me going completely insane

ThomasC 21-08-2022 11:55 AM

Not much.

It can be exhausting.

Redway 21-08-2022 03:38 PM

I don’t mind loudness so long as it serves some sort of purpose of functionality (that probably sounds more mechanical on paper than I actually mean it to). You can’t tell people to shut up/pipe down in Soho on a Saturday night or at any kind of party and that’s okay because I get energised from both noise and silence so when I put myself in those situations I get what I need and it’s not too taxing (not that I’m ever going to be the absolutely-biggest lover of ultra-loud noise). But when it’s at home I’m somewhere between average and quiet and it can be hard striking that balance when you live with people who are louder round-the-clock but so long as there’s some sort of decent interpersonal connection I can tolerate it without wanting to tear my hair out (just about).

Like I said I’m no lover of non-anthropomorphic dogs and that’s because of how loud and incessant their barking is. It’s not great white noise in the early a.m. when you’re trying to sleep or listen to a Podcast.

Can you handle voluntary high-stimulation environments (bars, clubs) or would you just rather avoid loud places altogether?

Redway 26-08-2022 12:21 PM

Noisy kids in McDonalds are almost unbearable.

Mystic Mock 26-08-2022 03:33 PM

I can handle noise for the most part.

Although I've grown to hate Trains.:fist:

Kazanne 27-08-2022 10:13 AM

I don't like loud noise unless it's music I like, then I like the volume up.

Are you still able to enjoy loud bars (which may not necessarily be playing the music you per se really like) or would you rather just avoid higher-stimulation environments like that?

I am deaf in one ear so some tones are annoying but generally if its music that's pleasing to me then I'm ok but some music I hear is really grating especially when loud.

Is there a certain type of music that’s likely to grate on you if you don’t mind me asking?

Niamh. 26-10-2022 03:49 PM

as quiet as possible, other than rain, birds, the ocean :flutter:

Like I said I don’t mind a bit of extra noise-stimulation but I definitely agree with you about the sounds of nature being more bearable on full-blast than a lot of people’s voices. People who speak really loudly just for the sake of talking really irritate me.

AnnieK 26-10-2022 05:43 PM

I don't mind noise....I have music on pretty much all the time when I'm at home. I rarely put the TV on before 9. What I can't stand though is more than one noise source. If I'm watching or listening to something and I can hear my son's phone on you tube or I can hear the tv over the radio if I'm in the kitchen it bugs the life out of me.

I only started putting on background music throughout the day and for sleep because the people I lived with earlier in the year were just far too obnoxiously-noisy for there not to be some sort of background ambience from my side (I think a lot of people use fans, whatever the season, for that very reason and I joined that club last year) but it’s stuck with me since. I can’t imagine not sleeping without some sort of Podcast or jazz in the background but the difference between me and some other people is that it’s not exactly loud music glaring at all hours (but even that doesn’t bother me because it’s loud and obnoxious people per-se who annoy me, not music as such).

I’m on the spectrum ..

I’m hypersensitive to noise / noises .. so loud , sudden noises basically scare the life out of me and leave me shaken for a while.

The complication with all this is that because I have such good hearing I cannot abide silence as then the quieter extraneous noises ( however quiet they are ) drive me absolutely crazy as they are so distracting so when I move around the house I have music or the radio on in every room ..

Trains are fine with me (I don’t even notice the sound) but motorcycles do my head in. Very annoying.

I read that as TRANS initially because it’s such a common topic :)

I actually love it when neighbours play music semi-loudly. It don’t matter if I don’t particularly love the songs being played. It’s just calm ambience (I naturally appreciate it more on Fridays/Saturdays).

I’d probably have to draw the line at classical fluff. Not my thing at all.

Some of it is absolutely fabulous !!

I saw some random stat that something like 20% of tv adverts / tv themes were classic pieces

How is posting a tv theme that uses a classical piece of music ‘random’ when we were discussing tv themes using classical music just minutes earlier ?
:)

I can't stand actual silence, if I don't have some background viewing or music on, I play white noise. Either stormy oceans, or meditation music.

At the same time, more than a little chatter and I can't really hear. It's like, too many people talking in a room and a normal conversation becomes hard to follow. Not the best thing in my line of work, but there's a reason I prefer SEN and SEMH :joker:

You should’ve lived with the people I was living with last year. Bar one perpetually gossipy dickhead who was just an obnoxious nonentity I didn’t mind them as people and they seemed to want to get closer to me but the extreme amount of noise was the straw that broke the camel’s back (one guy who moved in later that year was pleasantly quiet, ’though). I wouldn’t have minded it if it was just a case of me being the unpaid ghost-cleaner of the flat (I’m used to it) but there’d be screaming and wild seshes of all sorts at 3 a.m. (not to mention spitting in the sink) yet one of them had the audacity to tell me to close the doors a little bit quieter because the sound of doors opening and closing with any more than the slightest bit of natural quiet noise (and even then it was usually a case of me having to balance my vacuum cleaner with plates or a cup of tea at the door because they were so messy I basically had to give the kitchen something of a clean every time I went in) “gave him panic attacks.” It’s always the unbearably noisy ones who seem to have the worst double-standards. Eventually I left with my kettle and trays (which I didn’t mind letting them use) and pissed in the kettle as a form of cheeky allegiance to myself to never live with such uncivilised people ever again. Apparently they’d always been full of praise for me for being such a clean and respectful flatmate but in the end there was only so much noisy hypocrisy I could take and it spoilt my enjoyment of living in that place.

That is EXACTLY my take on things ..

In silence my mind goes into overdrive !!
I have a radio or CD player ( sometimes both ) in every single room ( even the bathroom towel cupboard ) .
