What awful bad luck

RIP to the victims

I can't believe the police didn't even attempt to track the phones of the victims. Two lives could have been saved. This is an utter disgrace.

Not sure it was a lonely road either

The mother of one of five victims of a car crash was told to stop calling the police station for updates while her daughter lay undiscovered and severely injured for around 46 hours.

Sophie Russon’s mother, Anna Certowicz, reported her daughter missing after she didn’t come back from a night out in Newport, South Wales on Friday evening with two of her childhood friends.

Sophie, 20, was last seen with Eve Smith, 21, and Darcy Ross, 21, in Cardiff in the early hours of Saturday having travelled there from Porthcawl.

They had made the trip in a Volkswagen Tiguan with two men, Rafel Jeanne, 24, and Shane Loughlin, 32, both from Cardiff, who were also reported as missing.

Police believe the car was involved in a road traffic collision and came off the A48(M) but it is not clear exactly when that happened.

On Monday, South Wales Police said they discovered the wreckage of the car near a roundabout just after midnight in St Mellon.

Yeah I read that it was a busy road and there's a garden centre next to the roundabout where they were found. I read that they were missing yesterday morning so it seems crazy that it took so long to find the car

I can’t even imagine the agony the families went through waiting for news, I just hope the two taken from the accident survive

Yeah I guess so, it just doesn't seem like a very thorough search of the area was done despite them being missing. The parents are very angry about it

apparently the family members looking for the car went passed it several times without seeing it, so i don't think the police are entirely to blame. Also a regular on the road passed it multiple times without ever spotting it.

Another point to note, the police are not allowed to just track someone's phone, they have to get a court order to do that, and then request the data from phone companies. These things don't happen in hours, it's days and weeks. Also, teens go missing all the time, away on trips here there and everywhere, and it was the weekend, so no legal option would be available in the short term

The really awful thing is that it may well be the case that others survived the crash and needed urgent hospital treatment (e.g. bleeding) and didn't make it because of how long it took for them to be found.

They'll be able to tell if they were killed on impact from autopsies - honestly I hope for their parents that it shows they died in the crash. Losing a child in any way is unthinkable, but knowing that they might have survived if they'd been found is just the worst imaginable outcome.

All in their early 20's. Still just babies really.

Were they victims of a reckless driver coming the other way or was their driver drunk / under the influence of drugs / weed / nitro oxide or showing off to the girls. ?????

In a situation like this when time is of the essence then the police should be able to track anyone’s mobile

Interesting that so many just drove past without seeing the wrecked car .. crazy that they are piling blame on the flaming police for struggling to find it

of course they shouldn't, thats a direct invasion of privacy and requires a court order

If the rule change saved the life of just one poor soul - it would be worth it imho

All this invasion of privacy and concerns about the proliferation of CCTV cameras is a load of hogwash to my mind .

What are all these people worried about or hiding ?

I have a clear conscience and none of the above concerns me at all

when you see what a bit of power did to Matty Hanny I dont think it would be a good idea. Parents could have find my phone apps though if their kids wanted them to, but what 20 year old thinks they need that, you are invincible at that age

That’s one evil copper .. against thousands of missing youngsters every year ..

Isn’t the suggestion that one or more of these kids could have been saved if they were found earlier ??
