Your Cat must be chipped or in 21 days you get Fined £500

Some Charities
will give your Cat a Free Chip.

From Today.

[All cats in England must be microchipped
and registered on a database from Monday
under new laws.

The new legislation applies to all cats aged
20 weeks and older, including indoor cats.
The RSPCA said that one in 10 cats going
into their centres were still not microchipped,
despite the incoming law change.

Pet owners found breaking the rules face
a £500 fine if they do not comply within 21 days.

Data from a Cats Protection survey
suggested about 1.9 million cats in England
were not microchipped.

The charity said owners of about 300,000
cats were not sure if they were
microchipped or not.

Microchipping involves a small chip being
"quickly and simply" inserted under the
animal's skin to give the pet its own unique code.

The chip can then be scanned and matched
to the owner's contact details that are
kept on a database.]

How is this going to be enforced ?

The police are over stretched as it is , can’t see them carrying a scanner for random moggy tests .

Then if someone scans a cat how do they trace the owner ?

Soooo many questions

The Cat owners Address is on the chip.
They can return the Cat

Police do not scan the cat.

Vets do.

The Cat can be put down - if no one collects it

This will create bad blood between vets and the clients they fleece mercilessly at every given opportunity

Can’t see anyone having to pay the actual fine tbh

At worst the vets will have a serious ‘word’ … and try and persuade the owner to have the cat chipped

Mystic Mock 10-06-2024 09:05 AM

They want even indoor Cats to be chipped?

Jordan. 10-06-2024 09:25 AM

There's no excuse any caring pet owner would not chip their pets. My cat once went missing for 6 weeks and we ended up getting him back because a lovely couple (6 miles away) took him to the vets to be scanned. Chances are we'd never have got him back otherwise.

DemRed 10-06-2024 09:31 AM

So if your cat isn't chipped and it runs away, how will the owner be found?

Wouldn't the owner still face the fine?

They won't
but if you go to collect it
at a place - pay the £500 fine

After a time they then put it down

I don't have a cat. Sadly. I'd love one.

Yeah I was thinking about getting a sphynx at some point in the near future.

In New Zealand they have cat shooting competitions

arista 10-06-2024 01:04 PM

On ITV1HD Lunch News
they said the chip is about £25

Ray. 10-06-2024 01:04 PM

That reminds me, I still need to watch that documentary about that guy who mutilated all those cats...

Beso 10-06-2024 02:25 PM

Rather buy a scanner for my takeaways tbh.

AnnieK 10-06-2024 02:31 PM

My cats are chipped and sadly recently one was hit by a car. Someone picked him up and took him to be scanned so I thankfully was aware what happened. If he had not been chipped I may never have known what happened to him.

Not sure how enforceable it will be but hopefully the possibility of a fine will encourage people to have it done

…awwww, I’m so sorry but so glad that he was chipped and you were able to know, Annie……but yeah, I texted earlier to ask if my grand baby cats were chipped…(…like the demanding/overbearing grandparent I am…)…and they were both chipped as kittens, which is the way to go, I feel…

Mine were chipped when they were neutered and I think most vets offer it at that point.
